Switch charging time is 3 hours, non-removable battery

I don't see what the issue is. So we play for 2 hours then set it to charge for a few hours while we go live life. Not sure why people are upset.

REALLY drinking up all this doom-n-gloom.

Like we don't live in a world where everyone already lives with a device with a non-replaceable battery and carries around a charging cable+plug or usb portable battery pack wherever they go.

That its is a bad battery for the what people are expecting from the Switch and it being non-removable.

But feel free to break down the chemistry of batteries for me.

Sorry, its a fucking amazing battery life for a device with this form factor and capabilities. I have no idea what you were expecting if you think otherwise.

oh for god sakes.. so much hyperbole in here..

It uses USB-C get a bettery pack. it's what i did for my Wii U game pad and what i have for my 3DS i never run out of power.
So spend more money then is the solution?

Gawd people need to calm down with these threads. Think about it, this is Nintendo's next home console. You'll be able to play their big franchise main entries on the go, in HD, and the whole thing is about the size of a WiiU controller. It's really a marvel, both technologically and industrial design wise.

It's not being touted as a handheld, and it will probably charge when you come home and put it in the dock anyway. It's a home console with mobile capabilities and it will do its job just fine for most people and use cases. Some posters here seem to have really unreasonable expectations on what they have built, try to be realistic please.

It's a hybrid. Even Nintendo touts it as such. Maybe you should tell them, they probably don't get it.

Have you been waiting 6 years for a longer lasting 3DS battery or 4 years for a longer lasting Wii U battery? If so I have some bad news for you...

A revision will likely add maybe 1 hour to battery life like the Slim revision did. We aren't getting anywhere until someone invents better battery tech.

Biggest issue here isn't life or charge time its that the battery is not replaceable.

Everything is the worst. Hopes and dreams were crushed for those who had no interest in the first place.

Technically at the battery's very worst (2.5 hours) it'd take longer to charge than to play. I plan on just bringing my backup battery where ever I go with my Switch so it doesn't bother me much.

Still it kinda sucks.

Less than great battery life is definitely expected. I'll give you that. I'm not mad about the battery life.

What is indefensible is using USB 2.0 standards with USB-C. It's not a cost saving measure. The price different between the components, even when produced on a mass scale, is negligible. The difference between them however is massive. using a USB 2.0 means slower read/write speeds (in case we actually get external HDDs) and, most importantly, no quick charge. Quick charge means you could charge this thing from 0-70 in about 10 minutes.

No one on this forum was expecting the charge time to be longer than the play time and I can guarantee that no one was expecting the possibility of battery drain while charging.

While it's in the cradle the machine will do as all tablets do, charge and operate at the same time. It's not solely running off the battery when playing a game docked. Just like the the WiiU gamepad, the 3DS and every single tablet going. The battery is NOT BEING DRAINED WHEN IN THE DOCK.

because i don't have a life and should be able to play 6 or 7 hours straight before i realize i haven't eaten. THAT's why. to dismiss this as just a problem on MY end is absolutely ludicrous.

I like how the responses to Nintendo's fuckups are literally "JUST BUY THIS EXTRA THING" like it somehow fixes the inherent problems with the system.
What's the inherent problem here? What's the fuckup? You can play your console games on the go for the first time. Have you ever heard about not seeing the wood for the trees?

The fact that I can play Wii U level games or better on the plane, using a single usb cable, without bringing any power brick with me is a pretty big deal.

Going by the games, these aren't games designed for mobile and mobile power. Obviously they are gonna demand a lot from the battery.

Better battery life would be awesome, don't get me wrong, but I think all this was to be expected. Battery life is shit in general and something like this I expected to be, pretty much right what it is.

I'll wait for more information, but I'd guess that it could play and charge just fine, but again with the power it must demand to process these games... I dunno seems right in line.

Maybe you all have fantastic mobile devices, but all of mine, if I do anything at all taxing with them, battery and charging goes to shit. Just the nature of the beast.

Can demand amazing things from hardware, but if you expected this to have amazing battery life and be super mobile and a pure mobile device... well I dunno.

To me its always seemed clear, you play this at home, but hey if you wanna go on the train for an hour or to the park, you can do that for a bit.

Not TAKE IT ON THE 8 HOUR TRAIN RIDE!!! GONNA BE FINE!

Yeah I'd like to know what magic batteries people are using that make this look like crap. I cited the Anandtech iPhone 7 numbers more for that you could easily burn the battery down to 0 about as fast as you can charge it back up as it recharges if doing GFX heavy stuff. That's just the reality of battery tech right now. I had figured the Switch would clock in at 3-5 hours all things told, and that seems to be right on target.

They could either stuff an even bigger battery in or a second battery (which has its own drawbacks) or downclocked the system even more.

BTW, Amtrak has had power outlets for every seat for like 15 years now, so it's at least fine on that train =)

In the end if you need to game for more than 3 hours before you can find an outlet, get an external battery.

32GB Storage.

2 hour of game time portable.

Longer charging time than playing time.

Paid online for what will surely be horrendous infrastructure - it's nintendo ffs.

Must use smartphone to talk online (hope this one isn't true)

Same power as a Wii U - meaning this "home console" is now as strong as consoles released nearly 10 years ago.

$299 overpriced and $59.99 games (are they serious with this bullshit?)

$70 for a pro controller - more than an XB1 or PS4 controller. $90 for a set of JoyCons.

This thing isn't a marvel at all. It's a goddamn disaster with an abysmal launch lineup. I had such high expectations for this thing and was ready to buy it day one but now... now I'm gonna have to avoid buying it on launch just out of principle.

Too expensive and bulky for a handheld system (especially with $60 games), and far too weak for a current gen console. Nintendo thought they were being smart but instead they screwed gamers on both spectrums.

Nintendo truly never learns. I never thought I would say this but I honestly hope they die off after this thing fails and just starts making software. I wouldn't mind seeing Zelda/Mario on a PS4P and Scorpio.

3 hours of 3D gaming on the go is about what I expected from such a device, 3 hours charge is not too bad either, it could be better but at least it's not 5+ hours like some cheaper tablets out there.

God damn. This hammer. Hahaha.

All that is true. But I'll buy it.

I imagine people average way less than 2 hours per play session. For a console that's being played up as a dockable i don't imagine this will cause much stress to most users.

You know I think I may create a thread where I try and debunk every single stupid arguement against the switches technology.
In fact I think I will.

The internal battery can not be removed. If it is necessary to exchange it, we will exchange it for a fee at Nintendo service center (online repair reception).

Lol I give it 3 days before the first youtube tutorial comes out and where to get higher capacity batteries on ebay.

Service Center lol - is there anything they WONT charge for this gen?

What's wrong with $59.99 No seriously... what is wrong with it?

Yep! The goddamn thing already costs $300 without a game. Now you want to spend another $20 on a decent USB-C battery. Want another set of joy-con? $80. Oh you want to play a game on your new Switch? $60. $30 for the wrist strap things? Seriously Nintendo??? Why do you hate those who grew up with you?

With its formfactor I think its gonna be build like any modern tablet, i.e. everything glued and soldered together.

The Vitas battery was somewhat removable, you only had to loosen some screws. So it might be possible for Switch.

Hyperbole my ass dude, all these hidden costs are adding up. If you want an enjoyable portable experience it would cost over 400 it seems.

I had this.. It was amazing. But if you can't remove the battery, how can they?

An "extended battery" could just connect through the USB port and provide trickle charge. I'm assuming someone could design a fairly ergonomic casing that increases thickness slightly.

The thing about Switch being a hybrid system means you always hear justifications that skew towards the side other than the one the discussion is about depending on how it suits the person. For instance:

1) When there is a concern about Switch's power especially for its price and year of launch, the justification is "It's a console that goes portable and the difference between it and 3DS is huge". Also implying that it's fine for it to be like that because it provides a big jump from 3DS.

2) When there is a concern about its portability such as this thread, the justification becomes something along the lines of "It was never meant to be a portable console that replaces 3DS".

Smh

I've noticed that too.

Just tell me this: I can play this in portable mode while it's charging, right? That's how I play my 3DS at home.

I would think plugging in a usbc charge cable into the device would be fine while playing, if the port can't detect a tv it should not turn the screen off.

There's footage of the handheald mode from treehouse today which had plugged in cables so they stayed charged for people playing them.

I was going to buy one last night to scalp but the presentation was so bad I couldn't pull the trigger. Even this morning I thought about it and still couldn't. Good luck reselling these things dudes.

Do people really play games on their phones while out and about, 3hrs at a time, without getting a chance to charge their device?

USB ports are everywhere. I'm always looking for a place to charge my phone. I already make sure to take a power bank with me if I know I'll be somewhere I can't charge. *shrugs*

This really seems like a non-issue.
