Do you guys think there will be a Switch shortage?

Do you guys think there will be a Switch shortage at launch? If yes, when do you think the second batch will be out?

My guess is yes there will be a shortage, and the batch periods will be something like the Classic Minis.

At 330 merkels here in Germany, I can't see it setting charts on fire.

Specially since PS4 is having a tremendous line up this year.

Initially? Absolutely.

The real question is how long will it last and how big is the return rate 30 days after when scalpers return unsold units.

Scanning the online retailers, it seems many have sold out their current quantity, so from that anecdotal evidence, I would think the Switch has a pretty good chance at being sold out at launch. If it sells better than Nintendo expects, chances are they will do an extra shipment before launch (Kimishima said as much), so they might do another shipment before launch even.

Edit:

How big is this scalper business anyway? First I have heard of it being anything really significant (then again, never paid any attention to it whatsoever). Do they really account for a sizeable portion of launch sales?

Kazuo Hirai

I really want everyone to know how much more Titanfall 2 sold than Nioh. It was a staggering amount.
You still need to pay $150 more for PS4 PRO/VR in my country
So Switch maybe also...

I'd be amazed if it didn't given Nintendo's preference for undershipping to drive demand.

It'll be months before we'll be able to get a good handle on whether that shortage is due to supply or demand basically.

Since it's a March launch, the shortages will be over soon. The initial shipment will be nearly sold through, but starting April / May, new shipments will come in.

If Nintendo improves the offer come November, the real shortages may start there.

Will sell out of course. How it's selling by October and November is the real question. Lack of games won't sell it though.

I do think Nintendo's software is there and people aren't realizing it. But without third party it's rough.

Zelda, Mario kart, Splatoon two and mario is a really big year for them as a game maker. I get mario kart is a port but a lot of folks didn't play it. Of course if they don't sell them a lot of people won't play it again.

Nintendo UK still has pre-orders available.

I'm going to say that individual shops will certainly be sold out, but places that are less commonly frequented will have stock.

That said, Nintendo haven't really started advertising the thing yet. These hands-on events they plan on holding over the next few weeks could create a lot of positive word of mouth and change things.

Despite people's perceptions and utter lack of AAA offerings I think some are forgetting this a launch of a Nintendo console. Of course there will be shortages.

I'm literally buying one because I don't trust Nintendo to have it on the shelves regularly when Mario and splatoon come around.

The first week might be tougher to get one. I remember even the WiiU being almost sold out. After that I doubt it will be an issue.

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to walk in a week or two after launch and pick one up. But I may hold out till Odyssey is released. Right now there's no appeal to spend $300 on a machine just to play an uprezzed Zelda I can play on my WiiU (which I can't unplug just yet, haven't even gotten around to Color Splash yet!)

Throughout march most likely. I'm planning a May purchase so hopefully it should be in stock by then. Mario kart/Zelda bundle sounds god after beating persona 5.

Well there is 2m for the first 3 weeks of march (reggie said this recently) then you have E3 just a few months later and Splatoon 2 launching after E3 (possibly only weeks later)

With Pokemon Stars being the wild card as it's been confirmed and could come in September or October, Switch will probably stay sold out from Pokemon's release until after the holidays.

I'd also like to point out that this leak from Foxconn:
https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSw...r_someone_who_producing_switch_at_foxconn_is/
Did get an impossibly high number of things right, and where he assumes things like "1080p" screen or talks about prototypes with 4G and a devkit might not be accurate. He does mention that the joycon shoulder buttons when apart are called SL and SR which was only known friday.

He also perfectly leaked the battery capacity of 4310mah.

The "orange" and blue joycons in the same pack... it goes on and on... Why I bring him up though is what he said about production:

The entire factory can produce 20,000 a day, which translates to 600,000 a month on average. So they just might not be able to produce enough of these things to meet demand. If it launches with 2m and gets it's first shipment of 600k 3 weeks into march, it might only be able to sell 6m by the end of summer, though I doubt that is the only factory they have making the device, it could be that there is 1 or 2 other factories, in which case they might meet demand.

All I know is that it is a lot more attractive than Wii U or 3DS were at launch, so if you are looking to buy one and see a preorder, go ahead and get it IMO, you can always cancel, return or sell hardware.

Where is that pic of a scalper woman with a trunk full of Wii U's and $$$ signs in the eyes.

I'm sure they just jacked up the price and will only sell the thing in limited quantities to generate an early profit from the system this time. Assuming they aren't somehow losing money selling the thing even with those high prices. That'd be fucked up.

Absolutely. It will be limited at launch. Will get sold out in hours headlines but starting in April you should be able to get one if you look.

...All the local pre orders have sold out, though thats probably to do with small allocations...

As I described in another post, the Switch has been sitting atop Amazon's 'Best Sellers in Videogames' chart since pre-orders first went live, despite the fact that it has been listed as 'Currently unavailable' (out of stock) for the vast majority of that time.

Most of the other items on the 'Best Sellers' list have been available without interruption, but presumably the Switch was still able to sell a comparatively large number of units, even within its comparatively short period of availability.

Checking just now, I'm seeing the Switch at #2 on this list for the first time.

Thanks for the warning, I got my pre-order for launch day :) And thank you for posting this, I didn't realize that production is so "slow". So Nintendo is maybe pushing every console out and then slowly ramp up production for Christmas season.

My assumption is that while Switch is a stronger / more attractive package than the WiiU or the OG 3DS, it will not generate the amount of hype the Wii had. It is a better system for casual users, yes, but pricing and software are not there yet.

I suppose Nintendo included that in their strategy in order to get most out of the early adopters and to adjust prices / the bundles when the spending season really begins. They really had a hard time determining the right amount of supply at the right price.

Seeing the hype for Wii, they even lost so much money and couldn't raise prices - I suppose this is a recurring nightmare for their CEOs ;)

Absolutely. Nintendo said only 2 million for the fiscal year which ends march. Retailers have their allotment numbers and its sold out. It comes down to what percentage was dedicated to preorders but I would imagine a majority of the launch stock was.

It will be sold out for at least 4 months, I guess. People should have no problem walking in the store and grab one during holiday season this year.

Wasn't one of the speculated reasons for their "rushed" launch because their financial year ends in March? If so wouldn't they want to maximise sales and not play games with supply to artificially create demand?
Reggie has said 2m will be shipped in the first month and considering the time of year that doesn't seem too bad. I know Europe doesn't care much for Nintendo but day 1 pre-orders are still available everywhere here in Ireland.

At launch, but by June it'll be Wii U all over again, and by December UK retailers will be sending them back and will probably never carry Nintendo hardware again.

The difference is that it'll be much easier to drop the price after a year this time around, so it needs to sell well enough that Nintendo thinks a price cut will give a good enough boost. Contrary to GAF's opinion, Switch doesn't have many of the major issues Wii U had that caused it fail, so even if it does poory early on it's salvageable, whereas Wii U needed to do well out of the gate to ever stand a chance.

heh, No problem and yeah it's definitely not Wii. It doesn't have that hype but it does have general excitement around it. Nintendo's biggest problem is being greedy right now, they should be packing in that 1, 2 Switch game for launch, even then I think the $249 was a sweet spot for a hybrid and this is definitely going to attract console gamers first and handheld gamers as those IPs start to come.

It all lies on E3 IMO, if they come out of there with hype for Switch, I think we will see it selling something north of 50 million.

If it had hype like Wii, we'd be talking about hitting 50m in it's 2nd year. (It doesn't have this hype level at all)
