NeoGAF Games of the Year 2016 Awards

Pretty solid list overall though I don't understand how people loved FFXV that much. Really rubbed me the wrong way personally. Also pretty surprised to see Firewatch in the top 20 but again, just an extremely polarizing game. Little sad that Thumper was robbed as it is amazing. If you enjoy rhythm games, you simply must play it.

Looks like the poster with the highest number of appearances on affinity charts this year is LightOfTruth with 98 hits. Second highest was a tie between TheBigG753 and FelipeMGM with 85 each.

Here are my affinity rankings, some really high scores in here!

What a wonderful list, especially the top 10. So happy XV made it in there.

Being quoted in the OP made me feel special for a moment too, thanks for that. :3

Well for starters, apparently games like INSIDE and Oxenfree were counted as adventure games, not horror games since they did a one genre per game thing which is dub for horror since horror almost always attaches itself to other genres, like comedy.

Anyways, here was my ballot for the 2016 indie game voting for GAF. I didn't get to play every horror game in 2016, been busy and there was a LOT, but a few I can name:

Aw shit I forgot that DreadOut: Keepers of the Dark came out last year lol.

It was an amazing year for horror games!

Just apparently most no one but me on GAF played them, or apparently even heard of them. And it was a great year for games, and more of GAF are console players and no PC gamers, and many oriented towards genres that are not horror, so... -sighs-

In a GAF voted list, the horror games of 2016 didn't stand a chance since there were almost no big horror games released in 2016 on consoles or that got big mainstream attention.

Though I still argue INSIDE and Oxenfree not being counted as horror games is grade A bullshit.

I agree in 2016 you had titles like Fata Morgana, Imscared, Yomawari and The Last Door 2, it cant be a disappointing year :)

Well, I didn't expect them to hit big, but number of votes doesn't matter that much in the genre lists. Any horror game can be in there as long someone bothered to vote for it. In fact, as there are so few big horror games this year, it would be easier to get them in.

but looking at that list...
Horror Game of the Year: Resident Evil 4 = 20 points, 1 honorable mention
2. Until Dawn: Rush of Blood = 15 points, 1 honorable mention
3. Dead Rising 4 = 14 points, 3 honorable mentions
4. Dying Light: The Following = 13 points, 1 honorable mention
5. Resident Evil 5 = 11 points, 1 honorable mention
6. Dead Rising = 9 points, 4 honorable mentions
7. Yomawari: Night Alone = 7 points, 3 honorable mentions
8. Anatomy = 6 points, 2 honorable mentions
9. IMSCARED = 6 points
10. Resident Evil 6 = 5 points, 1 honorable mention

:/

edit: genre is of course another factor, but TBH stuff like inside wouldn't fit my description of mainly-horror-game either.

Heh, I noticed that when I was searching for my own affinity list. I was a true man of the people this year.

FINALLY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, MY OPINION ON VIDEO GAMES HAS BEEN VINDICATED!! I'VE BEEN RIGHT ALL ALONG!!!

Was too late to vote but boy what a great year for many genres, including some unexpected GOTY material.

Surprised that UC4 actually got the award in the end, given the competition this year. It was my GOTY as well but many of these other games deserve it equally for doing great things for their respective genres.

I find it baffling every year that some users don't understand that this thread posts GAF's GOTY, not their own.

It's a representation of what the website as a whole liked last year, if you disagree with the majority of the list then congratulations, you're not a filthy casual.

Props to my affinity brothers/sisters!

Thanks

I'm really surprised how low Dishonored 2 scored I mean not even top ten and lower than DX: MD? Common you guys.

metal gear solid is the other one.

Nice.

I'm kind of surprised people thought anything else would win.

Last year we voted in Bloodborne (23 critic, 8 reader GOTYs) over The Witcher 3 (169 critic, 88 reader GOTYs).

The prediction formula has been "Biggest Sony Exclusive, unless they're all bad, at which point Biggest Nintendo Exclusive" for half a decade now.

This year should be Horizon, unless it gets a poor reception, at which point it will be Zelda. Edit: AniHawk reminded me that Persona 5 is PlayStation exclusive. It will actually be that.

Next year will be TLOU 2 unless it gets delayed, otherwise God of War.

Being a Sony exclusive really isn't that governing. The game has to remarkable and while the majority do have PS4s so game exposure is higher within that platform, there's no inherent slant towards exclusives, rather certain exclusives have simply been remarkable. UC2, TLoU and UC4 won in "mainstream" GOTY picks as well.

Bloodborne won because not only was Souls well loved series on GAF but Bloodborne was an especially outstanding entry in the series. DS2 and DS3 weren't received nearly as well even within the Souls fan base and it shows. It beat Witcher 3 primarily due to the number of 1s it got. Witcher 3's open world, narrative focused approach was certainly more appealing to the mainstream.

You're really looking at it in the wrong way if you think exclusivity is the factor, when the reception of the game within a sizeable fanbase is what leads to victory.

i'm wanting to do a gen 7 vote this year, and have it start in may. if that happens, i think we'll have a good first look at how persona 5 is going to perform for the end of the year.

I think we've had enough Persona 5 polls (anticipated games from 2014-2017 lol) to see how big of a presence it has on GAF and the word is it lives up to expectations.

Persona 5 is going to win GOTY 2017 GAF bar a well received Zelda. Mario has no chance since I believe a more cinematic, story driven game is always favoured when done well. I also think Horizon won't be strong enough in such aspects to compete.

Uncharted won? Not surprised.

WoW at UC4 winning. Not because I don't think it's a great game (it made my list), but because every time you see it brought up there's just so much negativity and shitposting. You'd think with a reaction like that it wouldn't beat anything else. Doom beating Overwatch is a huge upset, and I voted Doom over Overwatch. I guess single player trumps multiplayer in the long run.

i wonder how many people played doom's multiplayer

i know i didn't

I think that speaks even more highly of the game. A sub par multiplayer didn't ruin anyone's opinion of an excellent single player game. I tried 3 Doom mutiplayer games and about 8 SnapMaps and hated them all, but damn that single player is fun.

I love the GOTY list because I always pick up a few recommendations. I didn't vote but it's always interesting perspective to see how people vote and what the "prevailing opinion" is during the year. Loud people are loud.

Ditto. And on that note:
Owensboro's Recommendation List said:
1. [XB1][PS4][PC] Titanfall 2 (FPS) - This is my shame of the year. Heard the single player is spectacular.
2. [XB1][PS4] Inside (Adventure) - Hell. I got $10 free from PSN, used it on Inside, beat it two sittings and hated it. What a bummer
3. [3DS] Pokémon Sun/Moon (RPG) - Gasp, should I really play another Pokemon game? Haven't tried one since Red/Blue
4. [PS4] Persona 5 (RPG) - Already pre-ordered. Totally pumped.
5. [XB1][PS4] Hitman (Action) - Can't wait for the boxed copy
6. [PS3][PSV] The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel (RPG) - I've seen this mentioned but have no idea what it is. Hrmmm..
7. [XB1][PS4] Firewatch (Adventure) - I don't generally like Adventure games, but I guess it's worth a look.
8. [XB1][PS4][PC] Oxenfree (Adventure) - See above
9. [XB1][PS4][PC] Stardew Valley (Simulation) - Yeah yeah, I know, I loved Harvest Moon SNES. I should play this.
10. [PC] World of Warcraft: Legion (MMO) - NO! NO! BAD RECOMMENDATIONS. HOW DARE YOU TRY AND RESTART MY WOW HABIT.

I'm going to have to give this a full read through later, but our list here is clear testament to 2016 having been a great year for games. Personally, it's a little disappoinitnig to see my top picks relatively low down the top 20 (Dishonored 2, Deus Ex and Blood and Wine), but being quoted fro XCOM 2 is a great bonus!

Persona 4 Golden was my game of the generation last gen, so I'm super psyched about 5. I'm still a bit doubtful whether it'll get enough mainstream support to topple a juggernaut like Zelda, but I think GAF is more receptive to a new Persona game than the mainstream audience.

I'll probably play the WiiU version of Zelda though, I'm looking forward to it. It may even turn out better, but Persona 4 really resonated with me and I'm super hyped about 5. Nier Automata is another dark horse in this race, it could truly be something magical this year as well.

I think it's really dumb that we're not including the play anywhere titles like Gears, Forza, and ReCore. Not sure if it's someone trying to make a statement but it's really weird.
It doesn't make sense since the X1 list still ended up with a bunch of multiplatform titles. So the Play Anywhere (i.e. PC also) titles were removed, and we got a bunch of multiplats instead? That's not...useful...

Eh, I think all this list proves is two things.

1. The people who complain loudly about big AAA games are largely just that, a loud minority. Uncharted 4, Overwatch, Final Fantasy XV, etc. all reaching the top 10 shows that most people, even here, like big budgeted AAA titles with lots of polish and flash.

2. If you want to push the SonyGAF conspiracy, your target shouldn't be Uncharted. It's Ratchet & Clank. R&C is a very good game that's got a MC of 85, but #11, really? Or if you're feeling really salty, The Last Guardian and Dark Souls III. :)

Finally, a list by the people. Great choices fam.

Replaying UC4 solidified its spot for me. The attention to detail, story, characters, acting, and gameplay is all impeccable.

It just goes to show how much a game can make you care about its characters when you take some time off all the running and shooting to actually develop them.

Congrats to all the winners!

what a dreadfully boring list/year

I didn't participate because I haven't played much

Well there's your problem right there...

Can't believe a mass murder simulator won though.

/s

lol, who said that about UC4? Jack Thompson up to his usual BS again?

The Last Guardian got robbed, once again.

Come on now. It got top 5 and that's a lot more than I expected from a game which probably only sold a tiny fraction of the four games above it.

Also hell yeah, everyone in my Affinities has a 100+ score:

Yeah that's what I'm getting at. It makes absolutely no sense. Again I'm not sure if one of the organizers is trying to make a statement along the lines of "Xbox has no games" but this just makes no sense. It would be better to just not included an Xbox exclusive list if that is the case

Hm my recommendation list.

1. [PS4] The Last Guardian (Adventure) = 12 points
2. [XB1][PS4] Dark Souls III (RPG) = 9 points, 1 honorable mention
3. [XB1][PS4] Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (RPG) = 7 points
4. [XB1][PS4][PC] The Witcher III: Wild Hunt - Blood and Wine (RPG) = 6 points, 1 honorable mention
5. [XB1][PS4][PC] The Witness (Puzzle) = 6 points
6. [XB1][PS4] Inside (Adventure) = 6 points
7. [PS4] Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (Adventure) = 5 points, 2 honorable mentions
8. [XB1][PS4][PC] Trackmania Turbo (Racing) = 4 points
9. [PS4] Ratchet & Clank (Platform) = 4 points
10. [PC] Tyranny (RPG) = 3 points
Funny seeing the Last Guardian on top, but if I ever did plan to get a PS4, I would definitely check it out. Otherwise meh at the rest of the list. It was also funny seeing Zero Time Dilemma at #11, but well I already got it and was not impress with quite a few things about it.XD

As for Affinity, not bad I guess :p, but I also did top 7 only, so that might had affected it a little.

Was pretty fun voting this year.

GAF, you disappointed me

i understand why Uncharted 4 is number 1, most people enjoy story mode over MP and even though i'm disappointed by UC4, it's still the best Single player game of 2016

but how the hell does that repetitive overrated game Doom gets a higher place than the masterpiece Overwatch ?

and why is Forza Horizon 3 not in the top 5 ??

It's a work in progress. Games can only be one one platform to count for it. Some games are currently still miscategorized because doing this right for 500+ games is not easy.

This is how platform exclusive has always worked. It has worked that way when PS3 and Vita shared games and it will work like it for XB1 and W10.

Instead of creating a special exception for Xbox it should completely be dropped across the board because who the fuck cares about where a good game is playable.

So games that are shared across PS3/PS4/PSV shouldn't be included either? That was previously the rule?

Because if so, I count four games on the PSV list that are cross-platform. And one on PC in addition to the four I mentioned on X1.

They are miscategorized, that's why they show up this way. The only other exception is when it's a late port, which is why Rocket League shows up on XB1.

The weird part is that I remember discussing how a number of games not named Uncharted were vying for the lead the last time I read the voting thread. Clearly there was a massive upswell in UC4 support late in the game.

Speaking as someone who considers themselves an Uncharted fan, I thought UC4 was overwhelmingly mediocre and felt like a huge disappointment Die to a bizzare tonal shift for the series along with severe pacing issues and what felt like a very jarring disjointed narrative. there were just so many other games I had so much more fun with I just can't imagine why so many would choose this over the others.

In the future we will look back at this list and say "That was the year Doom/Overwatch was robbed."

Massive upsell late in the game? Why make baseless claims when there's proof in the OP that Uncharted 4 kept the lead from early on?

People are really upset over U4 winning and are going though some crazy mental loops to justify it. The only thing we'll comment on when we look at this list in the future is the crazy amount of salt in this thread.

Dark Souls 3 was also a critical darling and available for PS4 (and everything else), but got a fraction of the votes Bloodborne got. Hmmmm.

Exclusivity carries weight here. I don't see why people refuse to acknowledge that. It's not some crazy conspiracy theory. It's just a fact backed up by data. Obviously a bad exclusive isn't going to win just for being an exclusive, but if a game is good and exclusive then that puts the game at an advantage. It's dumb and some people don't want to admit it but it's true. I don't think that anyone is saying any of the GAF winners are undeserving. We're just acknowledging a bias that exists.

Make the case how that bias worked in 2014 vs. the two media GOTY games. Maybe you can make a convincing argument for it how GAF is wrong for choosing Bayonetta 2 over Dragon Age Inquision and Shadow Of Mordor.

And if you can't then what the fuck is the point. Is it just to say bias a whole bunch to make yourself feel okay because your pet favorite game wasn't voted #1? Mine wasn't either this year nor last year and I'm fine.

Edit: To be clear, I don't disagree that it shows exclusives are getting a lot of points. But what purpose is pointing that out when those are great games? If Knack got GOTY there would be some fucking shenanigans going on but we're talking about extremely critically acclaimed games.

Yeah this is a weird thing. I honestly don't know how this list should handle and I don't really care enough since we're getting into arbitrary distinctions. The star of the show is the GOTY list and that's ultimately what matters most.

I bet being a Sony exclusive doesn't get you as many points as people think. Uncharted 4 won because it's in the right genre, it has insanely high production values, and most importantly: it actually didn't have any competition this year. Every game in the top 6 has some kind of handicap. Overwatch is in the wrong genre, Doom has no story, FF XV had major story issues, TLG has obtuse mechanics, Dark Souls 3 is in a franchise experiencing fatigue.

If The Witcher 3 was released this year it would've crushed Uncharted 4. Search your heart, you know it to be true.

Bloodborne metacritic: 92
Dark Souls III metacritic: 89

Bloodborne was following up the what most consider the worst souls game, DS3 was following up to what most consider the best souls game.In the time between BB and DS3 there were many souls like game and the genre wasn't as unique as before, not to mention the burnout from back to back souls games.

Things are more complex than DS3 is on PS4 and got good reviews so the same amount of people should like it as Bloodborne.

Bloodborne is also the most action game of the Souls. I've got a buddy that loves character action and could only get into Bloodborne, the others he said were too clunky. There's definitely people who vote console exclusives higher because they love Sony or whoever but I don't think it's that significant a number.

Also to point out the obvious it's quite a bit better than Dark Souls III, and DS3 is my GOTY for last year. Also it had it's fantastic expansion already out while DS3 only has it's 2 hour mini DLC out right now. There's more going on than "bububu Sony :("
