Was too busy to get around to voting this year, so I have no place to criticize, but I'm pretty surprised UC4 came out on top during such a strong year. It came out early enough too that I can't even pull the, "sill fresh in people's mind" card. FFXV a bit higher than I expected as well, even though I really enjoyed it.

I still think GOTY awards should happen closer to March, so people can have time to let games that come out at the end of the year sit a bit. Hindsight can make a big impact.

The only game I'm surprised by in the top 10 is Hitman, I didn't know that game apparently has a lot of fans

That wouldn't have changed my votes (DS3, Abzu, UC4), but it would have given me time to play some of the games I bought from the PSN sales.

Btw Uncharted 4 is the only game (I think this year) that made me well up with emotions.

When Drake and Elena were in the jeep and the theme song comes up?
No other game I've played this year moved me like that sequence. Just terrific stuff

By that rationale, The Witness, released in the first month of the year, being in the top 10 should be a bigger surprise. I honestly don't think hindsight matters very much, especially if you take just a little bit of time to see what came out in a given year and give it some thought. The longer you wait, the less people care/remember as well, and most people are thinking about their picks heading into December anyway.

FF15 ranked pretty high for me because I honestly thought it was going to be a piece of crap after I played the Platinum Demo and saw the E3 boss fight. It's rough around the edges, but I think it delivered a great experience overall.

GAFs overall tastes seem to differ from mine greatly,but there are still a few games in the top 20 that I agree should be up there.

Overall it seems like a solid list.

Fantastic year, anything in the top 10 would have won GOTY2014.

You know its great when you are surprised certain games are so low, but they have to be since its so stacked.

I figured Uncharted 4 would win the GOTY, here and most everywhere else. I'm not even salty, I honestly just wish I liked the game as much as so many others do. Went from top of my most anticipated games in 2015 to not even mentioned at all. SAD!

The real surprise is Doom in 2nd and Overwatch at 3rd. Who the hell could've predicted Doom at #2 a year ago, and how did Overwatch's massive appeal not push it to the top spot?

Rest of the list is what it is. Don't really agree with the order, but there are a number of fine games on there.

Stat tracking for this is insane. Good work to everyone involved.

Franchise bias is something you're always gonna see, please stay tuned for Zelda this year, a name with drawing power that can outsell some of Nintendo's best WiiU titles with a musou spinoff.

Even though I get the feeling BotW may be more divisive than some would expect.

Missed Uncharted 4 in 2016 though I'm now on Chapter 15 and it has been stunning from the start. The jeep portion had me in awe from start to end, potentially a best moment of 2016 already.

I know Nier is a GAF fave and all alongside Platinum but man does it look like the odd one out when you put it up with those three.

Excellent work! I hoped to see Let It Die higher but I guess it was pretty unlikely. It's kinda funny that only one of my ten picks is in the top 20, considering how much I tend to align with GAF tastes, but again I haven't played most of those as my backlog keeps growing...

Also, I'm not sure it make a lot of sense to count Rocket League and such as "Xbox One exclusive" just because it has been released later on it than on PS4 and PC...?

One thing I noticed about the media gotys at the gotyblog website is that almost all US gaming media didn't give GOTY to Uncharted 4. Most of them gave it to Overwatch and others. However the rest of the world mainly gave it to Uncharted 4.

Weird huh. You would think it would be other way around with Overwatch trying to appeal to a wider audience with diverse characters and Uncharted 4 being the summer blockbuster.

Although Uncharted 4 is not my goty, being goty here at Neogaf was a given. People acting surprised sure don't have a feel for this industry at all or what is either popular or universally approved in the past decade.

Great to see my top two games of the year was also the top 2 for a great many people here on GAF - good taste people!
Yet to read through the thread, but I hope there hasn't been too many salty posts about UC4 getting top spot. Its the second most voted game of the year (after overwatch) by critics and the no.1 most awarded readers choice (across all gaming sites) game of the year for a reason folks. You many have found the game 'overrated' but please be happy that other people got to enjoy it!

Seems like many people loved Uncharted 4.

Glad it won. I think the game is fastastic in every single aspect. Replayed it recently on the PRO and it felt even a better experience. Such an incredible conclusion to Drake & Co.

Congrats to ND. Hopefully all the succes this game is having means that Neil won't departure too much from his creative style and game pacing in future projects.

I'm looking at you TLOU2.
