Phil Spencer "Played my first games on early Scorpio unit."

I thought you had a disdain for MS or am I confusing you with someone else?

?

I don't hate MS. I loved their hardware and games during OG Xbox and the first part of 360 era. But they went away from what i enjoyed and became more focused on shareholders and focus testing around 2010 or so, leaving investments into gaming to rot while they focused on third party deals and multimedia services and ad revenue, and kinect, with the worst of it being around the time of the Xbox reveal, which was my breaking point for bothering with Xbox consoles entirely.

They still have not gotten passed these issues.

I'd love for them to change, but as long as they don't, i won't be interested in their consoles going forward. This is why i have been advocating for things they should do to course correct, so they can give me a reason to care about their ecosystem again.

Havent been paying attention have we? I'm saying that Scorpio promotion and marketing as well as the strategy i just mentioned should be directly align together while people actually still care about the fact that MS is releasing better hardware
I'm sorry but that doesn't make sense.

You start by saying that the Scorpio is more than just pretty graphics and state that you think they should show more. I asked for some of examples of what you were thinking.

You then talked about their game lineup, which isn't Scorpio related, it's Xbox related. That's fine, I just enquiring to what else other than graphics you think they should show...

Is Scorpio their PS4 Pro, or a new generation? I am super confused.

Well MS haven't just upgraded the CPU + GPU like the PS4 Pro, they are using a new CPU + GPU, so I'm leaning towards Next Gen now, no matter what MS PR is saying right now, to keep XB1 owners happy. When it was recently revealed the Xbox One has only sold around 26 million, which is alright but lets face it, MS won't be happy with that, not when PS4 is running away with a massive sales lead.

Scorpio will be a good chance for a fresh start for them now. XB1 will see support for another year or 2 but the main focus will be on Scorpio when it launches.

What defines a new gen really? A power step? But how much?
New games you cant play on the old console? New controllers? New name?

If it is indeed a new generation (meaning exclusives) then would the existing XB1 fanbase accept that?

Xbox is directly having to do with Scorpio. The entire point of Scorpio is to reinvigorate Xbox. Everything in the Xbox division should flow together, the games line up, the corporate culture, the console hardware currently being marketed and advertised.

This is how these things should work, how i feel they should prioritize to find better success

But by that definition, the PS pro isn't a pro either, its a new generation of playstation thats compatible with the old one? This all feels like semantics tbh. If there are not dedicated 'scorpio' boxes on retailer shelves (not including VR games), then it isn't a new generation.

It's not about semantics, it's about scope, if you call your new console "ps4 pro" you imply that it's just an upgrade of the ps4 and that you plan a way bigger upgrade with a "ps5"( that's probably going to be incompatible with the ps4, it may not be the case but that's what it suggests imo).

Scorpio, as someone at MS said somewhere, won't be a "pro" version.

It clearly says an early Scorpio unit, and yet people on here quickly jump to "it's finalized". I don't get it. Still very good news either way, excited to see what games look like on it.

Scroll up, read my first reply to Inuhanyou, follow the conversation, then reply.

Basically Inuhanyou posited the Scorpio as being a new dawn for the Xbox brand with investments in new franchises and less reliance on their core franchises, etcetera. That Scorpio is their signal to a complete rethinking of all their business strategies.
I did not agree with that statement and labeled it as wishful thinking, seeing as Microsoft has so far shown zero intent to do anything of the above, and that's where the conversation went on about.

This has jack shit to do with competitors. So i'm not sure what the point of your post was.

Yeah, this post is also directed to you. MilkyJoe's post had nothing to do with the conversation at hand.

Brining out new games is not "radical changes in business strategy" that's every day business as usual (or one would like to think) as it is for the competition. A change in business strategy would be, for example; changing to an iterative release model, releasing all exclusives on PC, back/forwards compatibility. etc.

according to some folks around here it wouldn't have mattered by announcing it so early it allowed devs to start working on it last june

/s

You think they haven't?

We have people actively citing that no new hardware devkits have shipped, yet you have Spencer clearly stating he is already playing games. I think most devs know Xbox SDK inside and out and are simply using specs as a target and developing their games with that in mind.. they'll fine tune when they get actual hardware. I don't think there is anything hard to believe about that.

Well it can be all of those things and Scorpio is hardly an Xbox One Pro, or they would have just said so, like Sony said the Pro is still very much PS4. Its using next gen CPU and GPU tech, has a massive jump in power, everything about it says next gen to me.

Just because you think it is next gen doesn't mean it's next gen.

A focus on exclusive new software for the new hardware, that's the main thing. By that measure, it won't be a new generation even if marketing may make it seem that way. All MS has to do now that PS4 Pro launch has come and gone is to top it by avoiding its missteps and to successfully manage making Scorpio feel actually essential to more people rather than merely optional to most.

Price, timing, and advertising are obvious hurdles, but, IMO, MS' real challenge is to make the new unit enhance more of the existing library the way upgrading from one combo of CPU/GPU/RAM on a mobo feels to a PC owner simply moving the HDD and Steam/GoG/Origin accounts to a new desktop or laptop does (minus the technical hassles). Failing that, they're left to new software to push it, like cross-gen stuff might have before this new era of smaller incremental releases hit. That puts them in the same boat as Sony on that issue.

This.

Well the Original Xbox only had a 4 year life cycle, so it's not the first time MS has done it and XB1 support will still continue for a while longer, its not like the console will suddenly stop working.

The whole "next generation" line of thinking is just weird. It really doesn't mean anything at all per se. It's a buzzword.

well they should manage to avoid most of those because Sony was distracted trying to sell PSVR and shift PS4 slim in the holidays. MS won't give a fuck and will quite possibly ignore the base XB1 and push scorpio with a lot of marketing money.

Even if technically they aren't that dissimilar, and it only has higher res XB1 games, I bet MS make it seem like the second coming. Lots of 'native' 4k talk, emphasis on the UHD bluray, ram if thats bigger too.

I wish they'd have given more info before the Switch launches just to hurt its sales some more.

I guess there's still time for that.

Besides being insane fanboy stuff, no amount of "high power new console" will hurt the switch. It's a portable that can be used as a console. It isn't super underpowered for what's possible in that space these days.

Just make sure it comes in white, Phil.
It'll come exclusively in pink for the first 12 months.

That's what good marketing does. Hell, it's their job.

They have no reason to go back on the no exclusive thing. 3rd party aren't leaving the PS4 behind and all their exclusives will be on PC and therefore have to run on Xbox One equivalent hardware anyway, It'd just piss people off, for no real benefit. Maybe a year after the PS5 releases they'll drop support, as more 3rd party dev would be on board with 2 much more powerful systems on the market, but I doubt it'll happen until then.

Depend, Microsoft is pretty famous to kill and bury their previous console when they swtich "generation". I can be a buzzword for you, but for some consumer it can be more alarming.

Phil sure rustled some jimmies in here with that tweet ;)
I'm curios to see if they will go the Xbox event prior to E3 route like last ime.

As a matter of fact it's cutting edge in that space. Digital Foundry names Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as the best looking and performing (60fps) title on a portable ever.

Is this really such a feat though? I mean, Vita/3DS is the only real handheld comparisons here.

I remember last year he said they were ahead of schedule with it. Be nice if devs get a decent amount of time with the final kits before launch.

I'm pretty sure they were including mobile with that.

And with the new Shield revealed to use the old stock X1 it seems that there is no more advanced GPU in actual use today.

Just having the giant leap in specs makes it a next gen console for me regardless of how they're marketing it and that's not a bad thing.

Yeah I'm not seeing it as bad either, some people clearly don't like it though.

I can see Phil coming on stage at E3 and saying "Look, what we had planned is clearly not working as well as we hoped, sales of Xbox One have not been what we would have liked, so we need to change things to make Xbox better for customers and we will make that change with Scorpio, our next generation Xbox"

If they are upfront with us, I'm sure they will piss off less people, than if they try to hide it behind all the PR bullshit.

This is such a stupid opinion to have.

First, assuming that people that are interested on the Switch would necessarily be interested on the Scorpio and vice-versa. Second, because the Scorpio launch is still months away. Third, the Scorpio will not play Nintendo games, nor will Switch play MS games. Fourth, because wanting one of the few companies that is still on the market for your (YOUR) hobby to fail, so there is less competition is downright stupid and ignorant for an another uncountable reasons.

You are also derailing the thread.

To me market already showed that a more powerful console doesn't necessarily mean good sales.
Ps4 Pro sold just 238.000 units compared to more than 1.3 mln Ps4 slim. And that's at 300$.

Considering Scorpio won't be sold at less than 400$ i can see it having very low sales, especially if it's just moderately more powerful than Ps4 Pro. To be much more powerful it should sell at 450-500$, unless Microsoft doesn't care selling the console at loss. It's a really difficult situation for Scorpio.

Exclusive games more than specs will determine if it will be succesfull or not.

I kind of agree with you here. Regardless, it will be interesting to see.

Scorpio is a name i'd associate with an edgy brand like Razer.

I still say they go with Xbox One [insert letter here].

dropping your existing userbase after only 3 years is hardly the way to get people to flock to your new machine. who's to say they won't do it again? it's a quick way to lose your consumers trust. BUT, they can't just be an xbone 2.0 either. brand association will mean it won't change the current landscape. basically i think they're (x)boned either way

its geordiemp - he wants 60fps so he wants Zen (or a discrete CPU).

I don't think it'll happen. They'll spunk all their transistors on GPU just like Sony and it'll be focused on XB1 games at 4k. But if they do go all-in with a decent CPU there will be much rejoicing on here I'm sure. Will a partnership with Oculus/HTC mean more CPU power to drive VR? Well PSVR seems to manage ok with the crappy Jaguar so probably not.

I don't think slightly better 4k than PS pro will get people to switch platforms for third party games - especially if they're already invested in PS4 and have friends there. But if they did push that extra mile to add enough CPU for 60fps (whether 4k or not), I think they would get a decent number of core gamers to switch.

That is the whole point is the CPU, if its not upgraded then the Scorpio will be not worth it over the pro for me as Checkerboard looks good enough on my 55 inch (its getting to nit picking in freeze frame).

Also PSVR has reprojection at 60 FPS, VIVE and Occulus require 90. I will eat my pants if jaguar is running 2017 games at 90 FPS.

Something is not adding up, Occulus requires I5 class CPU
