Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire announced (Polygon embargo break?)

wait, they picked all the worst companions to return

I want Durance, Grieving Mother and Hiravias but two of those are Avellone's characters so ...

anyway I'm looking forward to this, but they need to overhaul their stats system. Also, the encounter design was not up to the standards of the classic CRPGs so hopefully that will improve as well

I'm not expecting a BG1 to BG2 jump in quality but I'm excited to play it (in 3 or so years) nonetheless

Isn't Eder the most popular character? Probably right with Aloth but honestly Durance and Grieving Mother's stories felt pretty much nail in coffin over.

This is good news. Will back.

Played through the mainline PoE but not the white march two parter. On my steam wishlist. Worth it?

Eder is the PoE equivalent of that Dragon Age guy who later became king or something. Basically easily relatable generic casual sword guy, wouldn't surprise me if he's the most popular

oh yeah, and another thing they need to fix is the companions interactions. I hated those triggers in the city that automatically started party banters when you walked over them, while they remained dead silent for 95% of rest of the game

White Marches is pretty great, just very combat-focused (but so is the rest of the game). I had to stop at the beginning of the second part because playing on Path of the Damned difficulty got ridiculously challenging without an optimal party, but I plan to continue sometimes soon

I'm glad that this is taking place in Deadfire. The in-game book from PoE 1 which described some of the monsters that roamed the oceans surrounding the archipelago was rad and felt like a proof of concept teaser for future entries in the series.

I would be surprised if Durance wasn't in this game at all, considering his relationship with Eothas.

Definitely. It's better in a number of ways that address some of the main games shortcomings. And the companions are neat.

Eh, I think you're being unfair to Eder a little- 'easily relatable' is a good thing for a party member to have. Grieving Mother had the problem of being the opposite - she acts less like a character and more like a collection of Avellone writing exercises, and she had almost zero interaction with the entire rest of the party (which yeah, there needed to be more of- White March solved a little with Zahua and Eder bonding over drugs and Devil nettling everyone). Which is a pity because a midwife was a slam-dunk idea for a party member in the setting. Eder and Sagani etc being a little more normal in comparison made them so much easier to care about.

Either way, the weird unique characters would probably work better for a single game- Durance was a great, completely horrible human being but I'm not sure I'd want him back.

Woot!!

150% in!

Don't get the people who have issues with fig. There's absolutely nothign shady or wrong with the platform. The whole reason it was conceived was to allow for something a lot of backers actually WANTED that kickstarter could not provide - to be able to invest in a game.

But you don't have to. That's all optional stuff for people with money who want to back the project in a more official capacity. for msot of us it works just like kickstarter. And I'm not sure how this works, but given Obsidian's role in fig, it's likely that more of our money will go the studio instead of going to kick-starter.

I like the setting in theory, but find the aumaua kinda boring and hope we don't have to spend every second minute dealing with their shit.

It looks like from the teasers the Valian republics and dwarven colonists are involved as well, so there's probably going to be myriad options of factions to be tired of dealing with their shit!

Fucking Polygon hahaha. At least the pitch video etc is still to come.

Absolutely adore Pillars of Eternity, so this is the easiest backed project there is. I'm hoping for a similar long form game but with more steps beyond the BG / infinity engine inspiration that was central to the last kickstarter. Already some of the features are indicating this.

Sawyer is going to be busy since he is also part of the Apocalypse Now game kickstarter.

oh, you just have to get him stuck in the level geometry and pelt him with projectiles for a couple minutes, like any real adventurer would do
and it's probably more interesting to free him because he'll likely make an appearance in sequel

Wait, what? They attacked me on sight, I didn't get that option. :/

I dunno. I liked PoE but I was hoping for something a bit different. PoE and Tyranny also showed me that I'm not into RTWP anymore. Cool for those who still like it though, I think Obsidian are the only ones doing it right now.
I'll of course get it, it's Obsidian after all, but I'm not as excited as I should be.

It's strange, I'm pretty crap at it, but RTwP is definitely my favourite combat system. I'm always thrilled to see games that use it.

I'm not really into it anymore but I think it's cool that Obsidian is making the system for those who like it. It's always good to have some diversity. I'll get my turn-based fix with Divinity and Torment.

huh, normally you start a conversation first, and one of the options is to
convince the dragon to let you live in exchange for providing a body in which it can leave the keep, which you do by letting the dragon's soul overpower a female warrior in the forest

Anoregon

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
I am absolutely in for this. I did the minimum amount on the original KS for the copy of the game, but they did a real good job with the expansion so I'll probably be in for a bit more this time.

Hmm, that's annoying. Oh well, I got some nice drops from their corpse.

This would have been fun for Obsidian, so thanks Polygon?

I really liked Eder, Pallegina and Aloth I could do without, but eh, they're not terrible or anything.

Watch Durance get nuked by Eothas in the intro, lol.

Well Avellone was co-founder of obsidian right? from what i understand from some of his recent interviews the break up was not a happy one and he had issues with upper management.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I understand that he's angry, disappointed or whatever, but man, you just gotta stay professional. It's a bad look.

I also see that his two characters from poe (which were my favorites) seem to be missing from the artwork. I will back the game day one for sure but i think it was a big loss for obsidian and for us whatever happened between them.

All in all, you're right. Losing somebody like Avellone is bad, period, but it's not like had much unput in PoE1. Durance was the best companion, no doubt about it, but most of his stuff ended up being cut anyway.

This would have been fun for Obsidian, so thanks Polygon?

Gotta maintain that stellar rep.

I'm 8 hours into the first one and left it there because of reasons I forgot last summer. I really need to start it over (or continue with that save as I remember the opening being kinda slow).

Imports really have made meta gaming close to impossible.

Fortunately for me I make decisions based on rp and it's interesting to see the fallout and how that changes or solidifies the views of my characters.

I do wonder what they will do for people who didn't play the first game.

Sweet. I really need to get back and finish Tyranny.

And golf clap, Polygon. Don't worry, knowing the difference between A.M. and P.M. is hard.

I have the first Pillars of Eternity, but havent touched it yet. How is the story? If it has a really good story i may start it up this weekend.

I think it has a quite good story surrounded by a better world, side stories and companions. Definitely worth a playthrough if you enjoy good storytelling
and better combat, haters be damned.

Oh god please adjust the combat system.

PoE would have been an instant classic if the combat wasn't so half-assed and forgettable. Characters? awesome. Story? awesome. Quests? cool beans. Combat? uhhh...I'm not saying magically turn it into turn based, but do something to stop it being a pause every second clusterfuck that falls apart when the AI meets a choke point.

Setup is very interesting, the ending is done really well, but it's ultimately muddled by too many plot elements that end up being not fleshed out all that much.

Still a great game, especially with both expansions and if you grew up with cRPGs. My favorite 2015 release just after Witcher 3.

No need to switch to turn based, they just need a few class specific tweaks and improved AI. BG2 was RTwP and it's one of the most fun RPG combat systems imo.

I had to add a new level to my grading scale for it. It's a great game, but not a great, great game. It's almost there. I have my fingers crossed for PoE2 to knock it out of the park, though.

Agreed! it's waaay too late to redo the entire system. Adding some party member AI would already be an amazing change.

Figured as much. I'm in.

PoE was a well run kickstarter. The best I've ever put money towards. I have no doubt they will do better the second time around.

Party AI was patched in back with the expansion. Pathfinding has generally been improved as well, though it still has a couple rough points. If you haven't played since around launch it improved quite a bit.

Even more than I realized after watching that documentary. It looks like they went in haphazardly, but in the end it was a masterwork.

Nah, played White March. Didn't finish the super optional boss fight.

By party AI I mean decent party AI. Hell, I want to throw the word "configurable" in there but then someone is going to yell at me to go back to FFXII.

Ah, yeah, some additional configurations would be nice especially for per-rest casters. Seems like the kind of thing that could be improved on quite a bit in a sequel, though.

PoE1 is BG1. A great game, but not a great, great game. It needs the BG2 treatment. Bigger, more content, better itemization (again, White March was a huge step in the right direction) and a more fleshed out plot and villain.

Dragon Age: Origins did configurable AI pretty well, nothing wrong with it at all. It's not something I'd use since I want to be in control all the time, but it's worth being looked at if they can spare the resources.

I need to play the While March dlcs. It would refresh my memory of the game just to do a complete new playthrough too

The White March patches improved a lot of the base game, too. better UI, improved and more functional abilities and talents, class rebalance, etc. It's worth a shot.

Honestly, this is good news. I tried to power through at launch, and eventually just got really annoyed/burned out with the combat system in general, though I've heard from others about the improvements White March brings to the table.

If they continue that 'level' of upgrade quality to PoE 2 (and judging from Sawyer's tweets, it does look like they're taking feedback into account), PoE2 should be a good trip.

Kind of curious on what the (initial) release window is, though.

He's done three hours of dev commentary on Twitch over the last month or so and most of his answers seem to indicate he understands what people find frustrating about the game. And most of them took the first steps towards being addressed in White March. Better itemization, fewer trash tier mobs, stuff like that. And he spoke a bit about how much more efficient their pipeline is for creating content now, so hopefully it's not years and years off!

This is great news. Finally this is happening! I've been eagerly waiting to hear about a sequel for a while. Tyranny is great but I was concerned that PoE wasn't a priority anymore, but thankfully it still is. I got myself pretty invested in the world and lore when the 1st one came out so it's going to be great to get more!

I also hope for a similar improvement scope wise comparable to what BG1 to BG2 was. I am absolutely backing this as soon as it goes live.
