Official Nintendo Switch hardware overview

No hardware BC, just whatever virtual console they decide to do

I wasn't aware of it, thanks. Can't say I'm too excited but it's interesting for future options like porting mobile games to it.

What do they usually offer for virtual console? My first Nintendo system so wanted to pick it up day one but also want to play smash etc.

I don't really mind the no specs approach of Nintendo, i'm used to it, but i do realize that it's really the odd approach in this industry.

Who sells hardware without boasting it's specs? It goes against all product engineering mentality. Would you buy a cellphone without knowing in detail it's specs or performance capabilities "because you can make your calls and it has apps" ?

The thing will be stripped apart anyway, i personally can't wait to see the hardware analysis of this thing, even if i already know "it plays nintendo games"..

I want to see it... all of it :o[/QUOTE]

Steve Jobs' iPod and iPhone presentation was widely praised because of how it steers away from tech terms to more commonly used term. The iPod sells not because it has 4 GB of hard drive, it sells because "it fits a thousand songs in your pocket". The iPhone was sold on the basis of a "new technology called multi touch, where you don't need stylus and it ignores unintended touch". Hardware specs can come later on a spreadsheet.

So it's not that strange, particularly in Switch where it's very clearly underpowered compared to PS4 and XB1. It doesn't matter much to the consumers Nintendo are targeting.

Smash will probably be ported over at some point this year. Don't see it showing up on VC, especially not at launch. I don't know anything though, so stay tuned.

Bare with me with this, but is the Switch backwards compatible?
With Wii U? No. Not sure how you could even go about doing that.
Digitally like with VC for anything pre-Wii U? Probably
Wii U had every portable before 3DS but they didn't add GCN VC, unfortunately. Though it's rumored to come to Switch.
If you want to get Smash on it, you'll likely get a port soon enough

So what happens when the batteries in the Switch unit or JoyCons die? Do you have to send the affected hardware back to Nintendo?

That's pretty much it.

As for myself I'll probably end up gutting it open if the battery is at least a little accessible. My batteries will probably die post-guarantee anyways.

Damn, non-user replaceable is ridiculous. It will cause problems for future retro collectors.

Yes for both you have to send them in and BUY replacements for them.
Nobody knows. Just gonna have to wait and see.

It shouldn't matter power-wise.

EDIT: It may require something called USB Power Delivery Spec though. Better hold till launch.
Thanks for the info, to bad its unknown at this.

Is the Switch the biggest console launch of all time? Has any other console had over 2 million units day 1?
I don't know for sure but since Nintendo is defending that launch allotment on the basis of it only being March and outside the holiday shopping season when most consoles have launched... Going to go with no.

Edit: PS4 was one million on day one in North America alone. Nintendo's two million covers all of March internationally.

IT seems that the joy-cons will be easy to open yourself going by the photos. Just a few screws and it seems you're in. The Switch itself however is rather disappointing, but I'll wait and see what ifixit says.

So even with 1.5 million, The Switch could be the biggest day 1 console ever

The lag is going to be unprecedented.

yeah im gonna probally pick a hori lan adapter or something at march

Can we stop this notion that wlan is a laggy mess playing online? I've played with WLAN on my PC and console for years and I've had only had a few laggy games.

the variety in ping and lag is very high between lan and wlan, especially on consoles if they have a cheap wlan adapter (which often tends to be the case).

also this has nothing to do with "games", its like acutally a physical fact that wlan is simply gonna lag more, nobody mentioned that is unplayable (although in a shooter, racer or fighting game this pretty shitty)

Will every game be playable on handheld mode or will it depend on the game? Would love a FPS on TV and handheld.

No. You can't play 1-2-Switch while holding the system in your hands. I think they have 1 game playable in handheld mode. You can play everything in Tabletop mode, though.

LOL how many people actualy gave a shit enough to plug their wiis and wiius to lan.... maybe like 15-20% tops. wifi is prefectly fine for normal online gaming unless you have a horrible router it wont make a difference for nintendo games sorry. conterstrike isnt coming to the switch so I would drop it with this crap

More of the problem is with peoples isps.

so people giving "shit" about something changes reality? ok then.

How many people give a shit about wiiu? must be a console not worth owning then

that some dumb reasoning

also your whole counterstrike rambling makes no sense

PS4 definitely sold over 1.5 on day one WW.

And like he said, the 2 million was WW for March not launch.

Everywhere I look I see only 1 million PS4s day 1.

If the Switch has over 2 million through the last 2 weeks of March, they'll probably have 1.5 at launch and certainly over 1 million

I am thinking you are missing the point. It makes perfect sense regards to packet loss for a twitch shooter for counterstike. I am saying that most people never had their Nintendo consoles hardwired. I guess you are saying that playing 3ds games and vita games over wifi is crap too? What type of logic is this?

PS4 was over 1 million counting just U.S. And Canada. Two regions.

Nintendo does because hardware specs are not part of their brand identity. For a new PlayStation you want all the specs, since they are a big reason to buy or to not buy that new PlayStation. Nintendo is not interested in that kind of positioning anymore. Other than comparisons with their own older hardware maybe. "It's about the games" and all that. Keeps things simple, whilst also frustrating for us enthusiasts.

The cellphone comparison is really odd to me. I never cared what hardware the 3DS was using. Why should I care. I know Nintendo will release their handheld games only on that piece of hardware. That's why that piece of hardware exists. A cellphone is a totally different bundle of attributes that I care about. Whenever I buy a new phone or laptop I go through all the specs, read a bunch of reviews, watch a lot of videos on YouTube. But for a piece of video game hardware? There are only three companies offering them. We all know what market they're after. We've all seen the gameplay and trailers they release. Those pieces of information are more important that a spec sheet to me.

Shipping 2 million consoles isn't the same as selling 2 million consoles.

Or, you know, some first party from nintendo, like i dont know, smash? Simply not true package loss is only important for twitchy shooter

I am saying that most people never had their Nintendo consoles hardwired.

yeah and what are you trying to say with this? Again, how does a fact changes because most people do XY, most people played also on a nintendo console more wiisports then bayonetta 2, i dont care what most people do. Most people are maybe not bothered by lag.

I guess you are saying that playing 3ds games and vita games over wifi is crap too?

compared to my pc, playing wifi games with 3ds is shitty yes, because its lags alot more

Seeing that they are almost allocated for already it pretty much is a sure thing it will sell through the first batch immediately. But the important part is what happens after launch window.

Most people are already playing on wifi on the Nintendo network already. Nothing will grow significantly worse. you are overreacting.

or maybe you "loling" at "most people" has nothing to with my point as proven

but whatever, still gonna buy that adapter because i can not bothered with lag

Wii U had also apparently "sold out" all preorders allocations and yet.

And yet the numbers were shit in the end. Pre orders don't mean much, specially those where you don't actually put any money on the table.

I don't think the wiiu had this much 3rd party support at launch compared to what the Switch has already.

The switch will do great.

Seems to me like the Wii U had more.
And I'm not saying it won't do well I'm saying shipped units != sold units and expecting the Switch to do PS4 numbers is setting yourself up for disappointment.

The Wii U had more third-party support, but the Japanese third-party support for the Switch seems much more promising and that matters way more when it comes to Nintendo systems. Nobody bought a DS or a 3DS for Western third-party support.
