SplatoonJP twitter - details about voice chat and matchmaking with friends on Switch

It's a big step towards compared to concurrents.
I'm not a person that like's voicechat.

But chatting writing test message isn't something particle you can do with a controller.
So using your mobile device for this is smart.
Also following online info while on the go, using smartphone as connecting hub to play online while outside : damn thing about the possibilities.

I'm sure that there will also be options to play online without owning a smartphone

You can send messages from your phone with the PS4 or Xbone, or check friends, buy stuff, etc...

The problem is not that it uses a smarpthone, everyone understand it's good. The problem is that it's mandatory, and there's no solution to do it with the console.

So fucking dumb. That app shouldn't be the main fucking way to play with a friend. I've got a phone, but say I get my son a switch, I'm not gonna be fucking around with multiple phones just to get a match together. Wtf is Nintendo thinking? They need to drop this app shit asap. I don't see how this idea got past anyone.

I don't give a damn about voice chat, but you really better be able to setup games with pals without an app.

It doesn't say you need the phone app to play with friends. I'd be kind of baffled if Splatoon 2 removed basic friend functions that even Splatoon 1 had.

Looking at the Japanese tweet, I don't see anything that says this is the only way to play with friends like the translation kind of implies
Yeah. You can't trust "rough" translations. They've turned out wrong before. I need a Nintendo fucking Direct in English from Nintendo to clear this up.

Hey Nintendo,

I have an idea.

What if the app

was on

the Switch.

WHOA! Mind-blowing idea, right? Then we could do lobbies without having to hold a phone in our other hand like a moron.

The tech is clearly not there yet for this radical idea...

OG XB did it and it had 64MB of ram total.

And the ram available for the game would have been less in that case too.

Perhaps Nintendo wanted more ram for the games because the console is also under powered. You're forgetting the games on the OG XB aren't as demanding as those on the Switch.

But what do you connect your headset to? The phone? The console? What do you hear? The chat? The game sound? Both?

This answers nothing if that, does it?

We still don't know this. The features are there on the switch to have normal voice chat - Mic headphone jack and blue tooth.

Again, this diagram is just showing how the smartphone app will work, no where does it state in the translation it is the only way.

Every time I get a little excited about this game, I remember Nintendo will have a paywall for it later.

Fucking hell. >=(

You're really reaching to make an excuse. The memory footprint and cpu overhead for it would be minuscule. Whatever their reasoning for it is, I really doubt it's about freeing up resources.

I'm looking at reasons.

- Memory allocation
- Making it more difficult for children to access (because kids don't usually have phones)

I don't like the idea, I'd prefer it on the console, but there must be some thinking behind it and no harm in looking at both sides of the debate.

Still dumb as fuck.

Who wants this?
Weren't the defenders of "no voice chat at all" in Splatoon presenting using Skype as an alternative. Well this is it.

The cool thing is that this comes up to be as the translation say it will debunk every most claims the "no chat apologists" were saying. Which would be a triumph of logic and reasonable discurse XD

Ok i didn't know this. My mistake.
But is it mandatory?

If they system is so weak they can't do voice chat better just stop everything now because cutting that won't a huge difference. And I laughed at saying those XB games weren't as demanding as Switch games, the comparison is so off I won't even waste my time.

Then they need to come out and just say it. Every damn statement is this confusing mess of PR for the app and no information regarding exactly what it entails. Just come out and say what can be done with or without the app.

Shit like this makes me not want to buy this thing. Who fucking thought that this is a good idea?

Seems to be inspired a lot by the Japanese mobile market with apps like LINE being so popular and all.

But it seems to be awfully impractical in reality. You need a lot of tentacles to hold both your phone and the Switch while playing.

That's totally fine when it was free but Nintendo wants people to pay for this shit.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
so a kid has to ask for a smartphone to his parents?
lmao

You are laughing - but i think thats a big reason why Nintendo is doing it. A player needs to have access to a Smartphone to be able to voice chat - which likely isnt the case for children. And if they use it - the parents will always know if they are using Voicechat and can likely track when it was used during the Parental control app.

Im still not sure that you NEED the app for voice chat though - so in that regard the Splatoon tweets dont provide too much new. Just like ARMS doesnt only offer motion controls even though Nintendo focused on showcasing them.

Will have to wait for that February Direct.
99% of them already have them aka what's wrong with society today.

99% of 2-9 years olds own Smartphone with internet access ? Thats not true at all lol.

Even at Nintendo they don't know yet. The PR head of Nintendo Germany said she knows as much as we know.

How Nintendo is handling the online services for the switch is really the worst thing about the system. Nothing I read about it instills any confidence that they know what they're doing.

I'll agree and disagree here. As far as in-game voice chat goes, there's definitely no reason for them to have put that on the app. Wii-U could handle voice chat within games so there's really not much excuse there.

As far as OS-level party chat goes, that does require a different set of resources. Assuming Nintendo had the capability to do so and just refused seems silly. It's more likely that they couldn't get it working reasonably and decided to farm it out to DeNA instead. That doesn't make it less shitty, but I just dislike the assumption of "company X could have done whatever I dream of because it's physically possible to do". Sony could have allowed for name changes on PSN from day one but we all know how that worked out.

Yeah... everything we know about this app seems to suggest that they had no idea how to do cross-game party chat. It's extremely likely that they farmed this out to DeNA instead of spending time and resources on it. Right now the biggest point of contention will be exactly how the app works. If I need to interact with the app constantly then it'll be annoying as hell. If it somehow syncs with your phone and allows you to modify things via the system, it won't be quite as terrible. It's still silly either way though.

A new kind of parental control, Nintendo cares about children.

Hey son, you are doing really good at school, take my phone this weekend so you can play and chat what your friends.
And remember not open any messages from my secretary while you are playing.

Don't buy one then, stop wasting your time arguing on forums unless you're going to make a big enough contribution to get Nintendo to take your advice.
