Y'know, I wonder.

What is with the strategy genre on PC and aggressive DLC?

Like, both Sega and Paradox have this thing going on where they have boatloads of $10~ DLCs that add little to the game. And that's not to forget XCOM 2's DLCs (Thank god for LW2).

Is it the lack of any real competition in the genre?

It's essentially a variant on the f2p model. These games can (and should) have very long lifespans where people play thousands of hours in them. There's not very many ways to monetize that play time. The paradox model is perfect imo, you can spend as much or as little as you want, there's a steady stream of new stuff, and they can maintain development and profitability without having to push people towards a full sequel every year. It's far superior to things like the Madden series which abandons support yearly and requires a full game repurchase when dlc upgrades would have been perfectly sufficient and less expensive.

Lashley

Why does he wear the mask!?
No, Idlemaster is much easier to setup and use. Archi's has a LOT of configuration options. Took me about an hour to get it working.

yeah, im using it now but dunno how to skip games

it also doesnt have me playing the game in the steam client so dunno if its working

This has to be the worst bundle ever. I want to play Hollow Knight, yet:
  • I don't have a Steam key,
  • all the download options provided by Humble fail miserably.
Most of the other games are less interesting than HK and require at least 20GB. Come on!

Same here.

EDIT: They just came back, without even restarting it.

Steam may have broken it. There was an issue with the recent games list apparently in the last beta, which then got fixed, so maybe its something similar.

I haven't bothered with catagories since for the past several years I've assumed Valve would update the client with better ways of sorting and filtering anyway. So many years later it finally looks like a possible concept, ergo it's still years away so I should probably just do my own catagories

It came back for me after restarting. Panicked for a second because of how many games there'd be to sort through.

Due to the PS4 Pro FW 4.5 that improves framerate and performance in games that doesn't have a dedicated Pro mode I might actually just get the PS4 Pro instead of the Switch and get the Switch this christmas. I mean. still, during launch, it's only Zelda Im interested in and I still own a Wii U.

So no one knew this was in development? Giving people the option of allowing old games to run on that extra juice seemed like one of those no-brainers that just wouldn't happen for some reason, but then it just dropped out of nowhere.

Well said.

I love the Paradox Grand-Strat DLC model. It gives their games legs that last for years. CK2 is what, 5 years old at this point? Yet new expansions keep the game feeling as fresh as it was at launch, not to mention far more polished and refined.

The recent Reaper's Due DLC was simply incredible, for example. Instead of getting annualized rehashes, or titles every couple years that start again from square one, we get an iterative title that grows and matures over time. Offering the enthusiast hundreds of hours of gameplay that it continually fresh thanks to new DLC even years later.

Brilliant strategy both financially for the company and qualitatively for the consumer. Win/Win.

For Paradox, I wouldn't characterise it as F2P. It's more, "Games as a Service," where they'll keep working on it for as long as people keep showing their interest with their wallet. And yeah, I think it's been excellently handled. The way Paradox does it, their titles are essentially modular, although core expansion features are generally still added to the base game (accessible to the AI but not the player). And for CK2 specifically, they've actually been taking steps to make it even more modular recently (adding pre-game toggles for certain features) so they can go more wild with expansion ideas.

CK2's really had an amazing lifespan because of this development model (I also think it was the first Paradox game to really use this model). It's intimidating to look at now, but Paradox has treated it really well overall. Like, it's basically been remade a dozen times over thanks to all of the additions over the years, both small and large, and it still has room for a lot more. CK2 is a thousand times the game it was at release because of this.

Paradox really stepped into a league of their own when they released CK2.

So about that Husk game. All negative reviews apart from one. Pre-release version too. Odd. Under the name Bart. Check his profile. Oh whats this:

welp thats disapointing, the game looked great in the trailer I saw some weeks ago, and the themese were interesting

we need our resident horror guru to tgive us the lowdown on it.

Dusk Golem

A 21st Century Rockefeller
For the Humble Monthly, Husk is a $20 horror game that LITERALLY just released today. It sounds like it needs some patches to polish some day 1 bugs, but I was super excited for it, it has strong Silent Hill inspiration (and hearing it nailed its atmosphere at least). I just saved a shit ton of money from buying it today from the bundle. XD;

Just bought total warhammer for $25 last night lol

Oh well..smh

If you can't refund for whatever reason, take solace in knowing that it's a great game well worth the money.

Waaagh at any cost.

So... ETA on when the Husk devs are booted from Steam?

Stump better jump on this game quick.

Humble Monthly
  • ABZÜ
  • Husk
  • Okhlos
  • Project Highrise
  • Ryse: Son of Rome
  • SteamWorld Heist
  • XCOM 2
  • Oh, Deer! (Humble Original)
  • Hollow Knight (Sneak Peek)

This was a terrible month for me besides the X-Com 2. Got Abzu and Ryse already, and Steamworld Heist on the iPad. But at least I can give them away to the community here.

I can send you a DropBox link, if that helps.

Why do devs keep doing this? It's not like a single review like that would make people actually purchase it smh

A new game with 1 positive review looks more attractive than one with no reviews, I'd guess.

Of course that all falls to pieces the moment real players start reviewing it.

I normally don't do bundles, much less blind bundles (owning too many games guarantees duplicates), but even I can't resist that Total War Warhammer price for next monthly. Subscribed for a month.

Thanks for answering. I will try another torrent client. I was using qBittorrent, but it does not seem to be detecting peers.

Edit: Nope, it is the same with another client. The only peer I find is the Humble seed which starts seeding and then stops after 1% or so.
