Magic: the Gathering |OT10| Aether Revolt - That shit that make your Soul Burn slow

While I 100% agree,I think that if they ban all of the Phyrexian Mana spells they also have to ban SSG for achieving the same basic goal( "Free" resource trading to get an advantage).
I'd like to see that as a sweeping movement to reinforce the turn 4 rule. Won't happen of course but one can wish.
I don't even think Modern is in a bad spot but phyrexian mana is just a busted and stupid mechanic.

Of course this takes Opal as well.

I'm kind of ok with it. I say this as someone who owns sets of all these cards.

Stoic Angel as the leadoff for highlights is kind of funny. Assuming exalted will be a limited theme, as there's little reason to reprint it otherwise, so Noble Hierarch reprint incoming too?

Expectation for MM2017: A good smattering of value all across the set, including but not limited to Path/Bolt/Visions at Uncommon, strong draft archetypes that are built as mini-version of Modern decks(Like, RG has an aggro/zoo theme, with Kird Apr/Nacatl/Burning Tree Emissary/Bushwhacker), Cavern of Souls/Horizon Canopy/Grove of the Burnwillows reprints

What we're getting: Bulk Rares as far as the Eye can see.

Whoa, that seems big. I wonder if that's just good customer service or they know something we don't. Don't they go to that invite-only retailer meeting where WotC pitches sets to distributors?

It's credit, not cash, so they'll still end up with the cash and probably a bit more as it's unlikely that people will order just to their credit limit.

Still a cool move, though.

It's not that all of them are ban worthy but look at the banlist, 3 of them have already been banned and 6 more see play to varying degrees and never to do fair things. 7 if Apostle's Blessing hadn't been replaced.

Why do I have access to dismember and gutshot as merfolk, noxious revival in Cheerios,... Colours and costs don't matter.

gutshot, mutagenic growth, dismember, noxious revival, surgical extraction, vault skirge. None are bannable singlehandedly but collectively they are, especially if you include the already banned cards.
So basically "ban these because I don't like them." That's not how bannings work. Cards have to oppress decks out of the format/make something way better than anything else.

I can see an argument for dismember, as letting decks without removal colors run a premium piece of removal is kind of twisted, but blessing seems innocuous enough and I think surgical extraction is actively good for the format.

Where are you seeing that in his quote? His argument is that they enable color pie break, which they absolutely do. Whether or not you consider that banworthy is up for debate, but I don't see anything about his preference in there.

Finally printed and sleeved a proxy powered cube. We've got a bi-weekly cube group happening now so that got me to finally do a thing I've wanted to do for awhile. I copied a cube I saw online for the initial list, and now it's kind of exciting to be able to make little card by card tweaks.

That said, boy that sure was a lot of cutting and sleeving.

Okay, I laughed.

There is some rumor flying about that the ZEN fetches are going to be in the set by someone that folks apparently trust on MTGSalvation. I'm doubtful but it's out there.

At GP Vancouver at least one of the retailers had Marsh Flats and Verdant Catacombs for cheaper than I would have expected to see them, and I seem to recall one other modern staple that was much cheaper than I had expected as well although can't recall what it was. Wonder if they knew something. But yeah hard to see the fetches in there unless they're taking the spot of other expected reprints.

I think it's way, way more likely that Fetches were going to be in Amonkhet, but the rotation change fucked that up. So whatever the fall set is is when I'd bet on seeing them next

Color pie DOESN'T matter in terms of bans. If it did then you mind as well ban all of the cards from planar chaos/future sight because the majority do that there as well. Hence why I said "because he wants it to be banned." Bannings have to do with power level, not the color pie.

The longer a format that doesn't rotate sticks around, the more it becomes apparent that color identity is a flimsy conceit used to push formats that do rotate (which, hey, get rich or die trying), so I don't really see why color identity is a valid reason to ban cards. Every color already has pinging in its arsenal without Gut Shot. (Perhaps not in Modern, but in Eternal formats at the very least.)

By way of example, a lot of the "problem" cards in Modern stem from a decision ca. Eighth Edition to take fast, impermanent mana generation from black and green (where they weren't exactly in frequent use anymore) and shift it to red. Elvish Spirit Guide has never been a particularly offensive card in the formats it's been in, but forcing it into a different color in a different era of the game sure made for different results.

That's a 100% fair argument to make, and even what I'd say is an accurate representation of WotC's attitude towards what does/doesn't get banned. But just because they don't ban for color pie violation doesn't mean someone arguing for banning for that reason is doing so because they dislike the cards in question. That's a totally separate thing.

I mean, link so we can evaluate, but it would make almost no sense for them to do this.

Yeah I feel like they have to be in something this year. I don't know that WotC would've gone for the fastest possible reprint outside tangoland standard- Amonkhet, before the sudden rotation reversion- but pulling them out of it to throw them into Modern Masters wouldn't be the biggest stretch in the world. I think Atlazan is the more likely to have them, but I wouldn't be surprised if MM2017 gets them instead.

If it wasn't for fatal push I'd think they'd be fine for the upcoming fall set. Having BG get Verdant seems like a little too much.

Fetches in a masters set makes no sense. It wont really help supply issues like a standard release and it would eat a ton of rare slots.

Is it really different from giving GWx Rallier value town?

Abzan would be the best deck, but as long as they don't fuck up with Tangos they shouldn't be that strong

I do think Fatal Push would be a little more warping than Rallier honestly. Why would you not play black when you get 1 mana terminate most relevant creatures with no drawback? Windswept probably wouldn't be reprinted so Rallier wouldn't be as absurd as Constrictor decks straight up getting the perfect fixing.

So you make Ramp/Recursion be a thing, it's not like Snapcaster Mage is running around. It's only 4 copies of the card, not a potential 8. Heck, If Amonkhet has Persist(we know -1/-1 counters are in), then Push goes from being great to being okay because it can't straight up solve a creature.

Rallier would presumably be played in Abzan Revolt, with 8 Fetches. Current targets that are revolting for Rallier, without him getting 8+ hits to active revolt:

Selfless Spirit
Hope of Ghirapur
Heart of Kiran
WB Revolting Blossom
Etc.

If they printed Fetches into a standard with Kaladesh, the sheer number of revolt-enabled shenanigans Abzan could do would be gross. Granted, the last time we had Fetches in the format they were "bad" for half of the standard period, mainly because Temples are the best ETB Tapped cycle ever.

Abzan getting Grim Flayer, Renegade Railer, Tireless Tracker, and Fatal Push together in an environment with fetches seems, uh, kind of scary.

If they had to emergency pull them from Amonkhet, it would.

Not to go into an earlier set, I don't think. ZEN fetches are so much reprint equity that it would totally fuck up the pricing/valuation on the set to drop them in at the last minute. At current prices you'd be adding $100+ average value to each box.

What is wrong with dismember or apostles blessing? The definition of fine
I wouldn't call them the definition of fine but they are mostly fine if looked at individually right now and I said as much.
So basically "ban these because I don't like them." That's not how bannings work. Cards have to oppress decks out of the format/make something way better than anything else.
That's not what I'm saying, I'm saying the mechanic was a mistake and shouldn't belong in modern because they are hardly ever used to do fair things in fair decks. Breaking colour pie is part of that, breaking costs is more damning.

You don't just have access to pinging with gutshot, you have access to it at a negligible cost and while this may be true for pinging it's hardly for most of the other effects. I could play pongify in Fish over Dismember but I'd be upgrading many of the threats I kill in P/T and I'd need even more blue mana, I can cast dismember off Mutavault.

For me the default deck for a while will be:
4x Fatal Push
4x Walking Ballista
4x Winding Constrictor
2-4x Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
2-4x Scrapheap Scrounger
3x Rishkar, Peema Renegate
4x Verdurous Gearhulk

All of that will survive the next rotation. People are going to get tired of BG being a Tier 1 deck. I don't think Rallier would justify adding a 3rd color even if we get fetches.

Phyrexian mana should have only been used on generic costs instead of colorless costs. So for example Vault Skirge would be &B (& can be paid with 1 or 2 life). It would largely maintain the intention and feel of the mechanic, but without allowing color pie breaks, and colored cards that you could cast for free wouldn't be possible.

I'm pretty doubtful as well but a higher initial EV in the set could explain all the rumors of the print run being significantly larger than previous Masters sets, I suppose. This Fall set or even the Fall 2018 set, if they're looking to avoid Fetch + Revolt, would make a lot more sense. They seem to trust this person but I don't frequent the MTGSalvation forums so I have no idea on how to evaluate the trustworthiness of the leaker. It was posted in a MTG Finance subreddit a few days ago with a little discussion.

If Zen fetches are in MM17 does that mean they've scuttled the idea of them eventually being in a future standard set? I know Maro seems to hate them. His comment about how frontier shouldn't have them for example.

I want to try this in standard. It's Ondrej Strasky Temur Tower list touched up with black
4 Aether Hub
3 Blooming Marsh
4 Botanical Sanctum
2 Forest
1 Island
2 Lumbering Falls
1 Mountain
4 Spirebluff Canal
1 Swamp
4 Dynavolt Tower
3 Anticipate
3 Disallow
2 Fatal Push
4 Glimmer of Genius
1 Harnessed Lightning
1 Natural Obsolescence
2 Negate
1 Shock
4 Unlicensed Disintegration
4 Attune with Aether
1 Collective Brutality
4 Rogue Refiner
3 Torrential Gearhulk
1 Whirler Virtuoso

Sideboard:
3 Dispel
3 Glint-Sleeve Siphoner
1 Negate
2 Radiant Flames
1 Release the Gremlins
1 Shock
1 To the Slaughter
2 Whirler Virtuoso
The manabase is probably too awkward. Might want summary dismissal in the sideboard.

I'm building a Zedruu EDH deck and decided to goldfish a bit, how do you even play fetches in EDH? It's a pain to shuffle thos decks. And I bought some cheap Ultra Pro sleeves, they are so slippery.

They're kind of a stupid dual anyways. I wouldn't mind.

They are untapped lands that can represent any two colours (3 in case of abzan), shuffle effects also come at a premium in highlander.

You should try it double sleeved, it gets even worse. Shuffle one pile, then shuffle another pile then awkwardly shuffle them together, split them repeat.

Decided to go ahead and order a playset of Walking Ballista for ~$10/ea. They're probably not gonna be getting any cheaper after this weekend.
