Oh shit... my CPU will bottleneck my frames? I didn't even think about that. I have a 3570k

The higher the framerate you're trying to achieve, the better your CPU needs to be in order to maintain constant frametimes. If you OC your 3570K you should be good for 1440p60 with a 1070 on most games though :)

Just... don't play Watch Dogs 2.

What's my best GPU upgrade option? 1070, 1080, or 1080ti?

Not sure there's any reason to consider the 1070 anymore.

1080 will do 1440p/60 no problem. Games vary obviously but I've played the latest ones with my 1080 Hybrid at 3440x1440 on max and no issues.

If you do get a 1080 I would highly, highly, highly recommend one with a hybrid cooling solution.

But I'd also wait to see pricing on Ti. If your budget allows it, it may be worth it to go for the big boy.

Yeah, my 3570k is OC'd. However, I guess I should think about upgrading. I want to hit 60fps at a minimum but I would still like to be able to reach 144.

This is why I'm excited that AMD is potentially coming to shake up the CPU market, we might actually get affordable CPUs that can sustain 1440p144 :D

These leaked slides might be exciting for you, then (go down to page 41 in the slides):
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=231267361&postcount=241

The R7 1700 manages to reach 167 FPS in GTA V and 163 FPS in Alien: Isolation. Not bad for a $330, 8 core/16 thread chip. (Don't ask me why the DX12/Vulkan games have such low FPS scores.)

So anyone have issues with Amazon and ram lately? I had ordered some from them at a really good price $203.99 (32gb Corsair LPX Vengeance) and while it wasn't in stock yet I waited on the order to be shipped. They cancel the order just as they get some back in stock then the price soars up to $349.99. Does that sound right to anyone? WTF is up with that?

So any good deals on memory? I'm looking for 64gb 4 dimms

We're in the middle of an accelerating RAM shortage because the RAM makers are all doing stuff for mobile, so DDR4 RAM prices are heading up for the foreseeable future.

Newegg might have some deals on RAM, but I don't follow the prices that closely.

Would a R9 390 to GTX 1080 upgrade be worth it if I want a steady 60 fps at 1440p going forward for AAA games?

That is if the 1080 actually drops in price in Canada, which, well... good luck to all of us waiting on that.

Right... Show me the day when GPUs are so strong there is overkill.

The day when you're specifying the exact display target at which you're choosing to render to. Do you think buying an 8 terabyte drive is overkill for when you specifically need a few megs to hold text files?

So then its useless to ask at all since you can play 4k 60fps with gtx970.

Is it worth it to buy a 1440p 144hz gsync monitor now or wait till Q2 of this year when they release the new 4k 144hz gsync monitors from Asus and Acer.

Not sure what would be the best investment right now.

I'm working on a proposal to test out a VR learning tool at my place of employment. I'm looking for a low profile video card with some fairly strict requirements I'm hoping you guys can help me. I honestly don't know if it exists.

It HAS to be meet the minimum specifications for the Oculus (GTX 960 or better, appropriate ports, etc)

It HAS to be low profile as in can fit in one of these cases
dell_2khxc_optiplex_7020_desktop_computer_1149916.jpg

It HAS to be capable of being run without any extra power cables (aka entirely powered over the PCI-E lane)

And finally it HAS to be under $400

Does it exist? Any suggestions here guys?

I'll make this super easy for you. It does not exist.

Hi, I need a lot of help building a PC, I'm basically illiterate when it comes to this stuff so I have no idea what I'm doing.

Your Current Specs: Irrelevant trash laptop
Budget: 1000 euro(this budget is including keyboard and monitor), Netherlands.
Main Use: Gaming mostly, Wii/Wii U emulation too.
Monitor Resolution: 1080p
List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Dota, Overwatch, I want to be able to buy games that come out in the upcoming year(like Nier:Automata) and now wonder if they'll even run. I'd like to get 60 fps for most games(am willing to drop to medium settings for it), 30 fps is acceptable once in a while if a game is more intensive.
When will you build?: Preferably in the next couple of weeks.
Will you be overclocking?: If i can figure out how to do this, sure why not?

Let me know if something is unclear, I might've left out some crucial info. I'm sure you guys already know this but PC parts are more expensive here than they are in the US I've found(unless someone can direct me somewhere where they aren't).

EDIT: I thought maybe this is somewhere in the range of what I'm looking for.

I love Pokken!
GAF how is this build for someone who's aiming only at 1080p/60fps for recent/future releases?

Corsair CX 500
Gigabyte MoBo GA-H110M-H DDR4
i5 6400 Skylake 2.7Ghz
8GB DDR4 HyperX Fury
EVGA GTX 1050 ti

They found using solder was cracking dies since the die has a much reduced surface area. They have built in tolerances to prevent the IHS crushing the die and therefore results in varying temp performance, albeit worse in every way.

Dont you think it is bizarre that Intel can make wafers to a mind blowing 14nm accuracy (Kaby Lake), but cant figure out how to attach a lid with good thermal path. Whats more I can pay someone 50 bucks to do that (or attempt it myself for less at risk)

So I plan to replace my GTX 670 with a GTX 1080ti. Think my current psu can handle it. 750 or higher.

My question is I really need to OC my 3770K but I would also need to work on better cooling correct? I have an aftermarket heatsink but using the stock fans on my tower. Without water cooling extreme goodness what are my options?

Did Asus stop making the PG27AQ? (Last year's 27" 4K IPS Gsync)
Neither Amazon nor Newegg have it in stock. Is there a new model coming out soon?

They've got the PG27UQ arriving later this year. You can still find the PG27AQ from retailers other than Amazon though. Newegg US seems to have it in stock, after just checking.

I'm currently running a 3570k with a 970 for games at 1080p (144hz when possible). It seems my CPU is definitely bottlenecking especially on games like Battlefield One. I'm fairly set on upgrading my Cpu, Mobo, ram before Andromeda comes out but I'm wondering if it makes sense to upgrade my graphics card now also. How will my 970 hold up next to a Kaby Lake or Ryzen CPU?

Of course tempting to upgrade everything, but if the 970 will hold up then I can wait for further developments from Nvidia and AMD.

Go 1060 (prices should drop) or RX470/480 and wait for Ryzen. Should last longer that way.

Don't get a Gigabyte mobo. Their fan control is laughable, ASUS does it much better. Otherwise I would invest in a better PSU (around 650-750W) to futureproof so you don't have to change PSUs for your eventual next rig.

Also go with a 1060 or RX480. Used if needed.

I have a 5 year old apu build that I'm giving to my kid. It has a amd a10 5800k apu, was thinking of putting in a rx 460 or a gtx 1050. Then I saw a refurbished r7 370 for a good price on newegg. Would any of those allow 1080p on medium to high settings? mainly want it to play overwatch.

I'm just worried if the cpu cores of the apu aren't good enough, I don't want to get a new cpu since that means I need a new motherboard since there is only, I believe, 1 better apu that will fit the fm2 socket and it's not much of an upgrade.

They have a monopoly, how much can we really expect.

Probably a stupid question, but can the onboard GPU be used unbeknownst to me when the display is plugged to the video card? I'm talking about an ancient Athlon 64 setup, with an nforce4 chipset and an nvidia card (shared drivers?)

I've just rebuilt my PC with a 7700K cpu, and I'm wondering what people would recommend for a 280mm AIO cooler? The Kraken X62 is new and seem great but it's more expensive(not really a problem though). Any suggestions?

Your 750w PSU should be fine, no problem. More importantly that it is a good PSU...Waaaaay too many people skimp out on power supplies, like building a $1500 rig with a $39 power supply.

You can get a good OC without any kind of extreme cooling solution. A decent air cooler or AIO will do the job pretty well. They are getting better and you can get them with a lot of bells and whistles, RGB, etc. these days. If you try an OC with what you have, then post here about the results, we can help assess if you need some new cooling solution or not.

I also recommend finding the thread on overclock.net about overclocking your particular CPU. There is a wealth of specialized information there.

If you like the looks go for it. I have been hearing good things. It performs similarly to the Corsair of similar size. (According to Gamers Nexus.) The Corsair is a little cheaper, but the NZXT has the sweet looks.

If you go to Gamers Nexus on Youtube, not too long ago he did a detailed review and comparison of these....and even took them apart and assessed the build.

quick question...

I know I'll have to update drivers (LAN, Audio, Chipset, etc) but there are a couple drivers that I honestly have no idea what they are and what they are for...Serial IO and Software Guard Extensions

Are those necessary to install or can I just not worry about them?

Seriously fuck mechanical HDDs. The secondary drive I have in my new rig must make about 80% of the noise. I've got it inside a Fractal Define S, and it's a (I think) WD 2TB 7200rpm drive. Anything worth doing to either make the system activate/use that drive less (OS, main files and games are all on SSD), or physcially in terms of drive mounting so that the vibrations are less pronounced?

Reposting my issue for new page, I've gotten good advice so far but it can't hurt to get a few more eyes on it.

Hi everyone, it's been a while!

I'm back cuz I need some help with OC issues. Way back in June I built myself a rig (hadn't done so in a while but this thread gave me the motivation I needed) with the following:

Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI
i5 6600K
CM Nepton 140XL AIO cooler
16Gb G.Skill Ripjaws V @ 3000Mhz
512Gb Samsung 850 EVO SSD
Corsair CS750M 750W semi-modular PSU
Fractal Define R5 case

to which I added an MSI Armor GTX1080 in August.

I've finally gotten around to trying to OC my CPU and I feel like, unless I got something dramatically wrong, I've kinda lost the silicon lottery.

Original temps at stock clocks with my AIO were in the 30s (idle) and 40s-low 50s under load, which I was very satisfied with. When I decided to OC I went into the BIOS, turned LLC to High, and went to work trying to achieve 4.4Ghz, which I heard basically all 6600Ks were capable of.

Using RealBench as a stress test I ended up with 4.4Ghz (default BCLK, 44 multiplier) at 1.325 Vcore, which I feel is quite high. Anything lower than that would crash either at boot or during stress testing.

My issue is that my temps are really high: in RealBench stress-testing and some games (Watch Dogs 2, I'm looking at you), my temps end up in the high 70s or even low 80s with my AIO's exhaust sounding like a jet engine. The weird thing is that the temps drop into the 40s-50s almost instantly when the CPU isn't under load (and are still between 30 and 40 when idle), so I feel like the AIO is at least doing some of its job correctly, but it isn't really keeping load temps as low as I'd like.

I'm quite sure I've configured my AIO correctly. The pump is plugged into the CPU_OPT header, which is set to operate at full speed at all times, and the exhaust fans are plugged into the CPU_FAN header which is set to a custom curve (in the Gigabyte SIV app because the damn thing isn't recognized in SpeedFan).

So basically my question is: is this normal? Is there anything I can try to have lower temps and therefore less noise? Are there any BIOS settings I may have missed?

Any help from you lovely PCGAFers would be fantastic :)

So far suggestions have been delid (don't really wanna void my warranty though) and check thermal paste.

Also thinking of making the most of people selling off their CPUs to go Ryzen and possible price drops to switch to a 6700K/7700K.
