Yakuza 0 |OT| Yes, you can start with this one!

Kuze rocks, one of my favourite antagonists in the entire series. I loved his
progression as a villain/rival to Kiryu
throughout the game and his theme absolutely rocks.

Just picked this game up the other day and I'm loving it.

I won't rest until I've become a karaoke and disco dancing champion.

Two negative things occurred to me recently that I forgot to mention.

You really feel bad for him? Dude was so scary.

His speech to him in the alley way made him a saint.

Also one disappointment after finishing the game, end game spoilers:

I was so looking forward to a Kiryu vs Majima boss fight but it never came :(. I loved the 2v1 fight from Yakuza 4 and was like they gotta it here too. Post credit scene was a giant tease.

I find it hilarious that I got Etsuko (the old woman with the blue hair) as a hostess and recently some client greeted her with "Kawaiiiiiii!!". :D
She's super popular for guys who are into talking.

Story playthrough completed. Plotting was great and I appreciated the fact that they didn't go overboard on the stupid shit they usually do. Game had some of the hardest bosses in the series and in hard mode the grunts finally did more than nothing. Fuck all those gun assholes though. Music in the game was great but I really liked all the somber songs, especially the ending theme. Anyway spoiler time

Part about Yakuza I hate the most is the fact that they won't let their protagonists kill anybody and it continued here with bullshit reasoning to boot. If anybody deserved to die, it was this group of scumbags. Didn't care for the fact that they gave Nishitani, Oda, and Awano heroic deaths. Like fuck them, they deserved what they got. Kiryu's reasoning for re-joining the Dojima family is specious at best but, hey, they had to get him in place for Yakuza 1 somehow. Also poor Majima :( Makoto never even learned his name :( Fuck that doctor

Is it possible to beat the Media King in this stupid disco challenge? The better I do the higher the score he puts up.

The first time I lost by 300 at 5500. Now I'm putting up around 6500 and he's over 7000

Hah, the same exact thing made me laugh when I got her. I guess beauty (or cuteness) is in the eye of the beholder after all.

Sure, I beat him on first try. With a fair amount of points too, iirc. Have you tried it on easy?

The mother of the UFO catcher girl is even more hilariously out of place. At least let me give her a better dress, game!

Club Moon demolished. I'm a bit sad that I'm done with the cabaret storyline. I suppose I could max out all the hostesses now. I'm pretty close to it since I've spent so much time on it.

Also, does anyone else think that the rival club names were references to the Sailor Senshi? Their names are the same as the original five and the hostesses wear their colors.

Gotta cater to all tastes! Some dudes are into the mom look.

Dolly?

I found the pretense so weird. "Oh, let me help you with those shady guys demanding money from you and be there for your daughter.
Oh btw, would you like to work in my shady business as a hostess?"

I think I beat him by a couple hundred and I'm extremely average at that game. Miracle however destroyed me.

After playing Nier/Zelda/Srw off and on all week I was worried Yakuza would slip by the wayside but it ended up taking most of my attention this weekend. I've got 3 clubs down and working on Venus at the moment.

I am starting to come around to the Cabaret club. Took me forever to realize that when selecting a hostess it will show you the guest's mood in realtime while you choose, which makes it easier. I'm not really making a ton of money though. The bonuses make up for it thank goodness.

Besides Kiryu, I can say without any doubt that Nishitani is my favourite character in the game, went from totally hating him at the beginning to falling in love extremely fast. BIG SPOILER >
Dat jail scene though, how I wish he hadn't died :(

Wow, was not expecting after completing the real estate quests
to unlock a new fighting stance...it's a big finicky to control though

Ended up getting it just after I posted. Definitely seemed a bit suspect before that though. When I did win it wasn't my best score either.

Anyway I went on finish Real Estate Royale. Pretty much did the whole thing during the last chapter and between all the running around and killing time it added almost another 20 hours onto the clock. Sheesh

Finally I can watch the money pile up. Just missing the sushi shop which doesn't cost anymore yens fortunately. After I unlock some Skills for Kiryu it's off to the final encounter.

well
Tachibana would never have been there getting tortured if Kuze didn't take part in that evil agenda in the first place. Not to mention Kiryu's anger towards him boils over so quickly...and Kuze should've known better than to cross Kiryu since he lost to him already like twice by the time we get to the Tachibana torture scene?

Okay, torture is not a nice thing and I don't condone it, but these are yakuza we're talking about. They probably rough up people for information fairly often. In this game, there are a lot more shades of grey. Of course Kiryu was angry in that scene. He wasn't able to protect Tachibana. He was angry at everyone and angry at himself. Kuze was just trying to make himself useful and get things done for the family, but he had no personal grudge against Kiryu or Tachibana. Shibusawa and Dojima are really the only guys in the Dojima family I consider evil. They had no lines or rules.

And speaking of lines, I still don't understand Oda's
motivations. He sold the guy he supposedly loves like a brother down the river. Told Shibusawa where to find him even! None of that made sense.

Two negative things occurred to me recently that I forgot to mention.

1- Unless I got that scene wrong it was kinda disgusting how they had Tachibana, the chinese-japanese, downplay what Japan did in WW II as exaggerations by foreign powers.

I don't remember Tachibana downplaying
Japanese atrocities. They talked about how the Chinese were pissed at the Japanese (and thus him) for the war, and how Tachibana also faced racial discrimination when he came to Japan because he was part Chinese. I actually was impressed that they even wanted to tackle such a sensitive subject, and addressed the racism of many Japanese at those who are not pure Japanese.

This is how I saw it as well. It's rare to see such an open discussion of Japanese race issues like this. I thought they did a good job. Chinese hate him because of Japanese atrocities. Japanese hate him because they're racist assholes. He doesn't belong anywhere.

Regarding Oda, I think it was that he couldn't let Tachibana know about what he did to Makoto but he knew their relationship would end if they couldn't save her so maybe he was trying to get the best deal out of it? However if that was the case he'd have just supplied them with all the info they needed except for his location, and maybe he did until the end where he tried (and failed) to bargain for his life with it.

As for my point regarding the downplay, it was the line "Behind that term was a war's worth of venom against Japan" which rubbed me the wrong way. Made it seem like he thought the negative opinions China has towards Japan was undeserved.

Just got the Gambling King challenge and fuuuuuuuuck the bullshit that is JCC. Ugh, it's seriously the worst game design of combining chance and freaking button mashing. In 2017.

Edit: And done. Never again with that.

Man, reading ZhugeEX's tweets regarding Yakuza 0 Sales in the West has been really depressing...

This game had the best chance to succeed with it being a prequel and all the great receptions it's gotten by major YouTubers and gaming medias, but nope... despite all that it still sold poorly. I guess this series is forever doomed in the West.

I've been reliving this again with the Giant Bomb playthrough on in the background. I still can't get over how much I enjoyed this damn thing.

re: Oda,
mayyyybe. But it just didn't ring emotionally true to me. I mean Oda supposedly looked up to Tachibana as much as Nishiki did to Kiryu.

And on the China bit,
I think you maybe were just reading too much into that line. I think that line was just stating facts. I mean even decades later there is unease between the two countries, so imagine just a couple decades after the war.

Damn... that's disheartening. I've tried my best to tell everyone how great Yakuza 0 is, and it certainly seems like there's a lot of new people to the series (like me). I guess we won't get hard sales numbers until Sega's quarterly report?

Finished it.

I think I grinded so hard on Real Estate Royale I forgot what was going on in the story. Ending was cool but something that really surprised me was
how fucking jacked Awano and Shibusawa were.
Wtf? I wasn't expecting that at all

Bummer about Yakuza 0's sales. It's really hard for me to convince people to get into this series too. Whenever you get their attention at least a little bit, it stops at "English texts only while being very dialogue heavy".

Lots of side characters are shoehorned into the real estate and hostess club minigames for no reason other than "we need employees". I laughed so hard at the mafia guy that wants to kill the mushroom seller, than after a good beating he decides to hire him, goes back to Italy and then back to Japan (in the span of 10 minutes, at least in my game) and starts working for you.

Hi all wonder if you can help, i wanted to make some youtube vids on the game after streaming it on twitch for a bit. Tried looking at that big wiki thats about to see if sega was content creator friendly but its not on the list! Then there was that 2013 fiasco... so wondering anyone got any updates on their attitude to youtubers? thanks in advance for any info.

FWIW I didn't get that meaning from that quote. If you take it from that character's perspective it makes sense to feel that way, but I don't think it's intended to serve as any larger commentary on the events being referred to.
It's not even clear to me that Tachibana himself feels the Chinese are unjustified in feeling the way they feel, except insofar as they hurt him and his family. I mostly got from him "this is the shit I had to deal with in my life from both sides and it is what it is, I couldn't do anything about it except run away and join the mafia."
I can see why you might think that, though, and honestly I could easily be wrong.

It selling less than major titles does not mean it sold poorly, it probably met Sega's expectations, maybe even beat them too.

People thinking this title was going to sell 500,000 in the West didn't pay enough attention to what the previous titles did. You just don't get a massive jump from 100,000 to 500,000, but a moderate increase to 150,000 to 200,000 is much more likely and believable.

The series is still niche, but before it was a bomba niche that even stuff like Neptunia and Shin Megami Tensei could easily outsell, now it's probably on their level, growth is always a good thing!

In Europe at least, this game sold out at launch. So it's obviously sold more than they were expecting.

Yeah, online stores were out of stock here in the UK for quite a while after launch, so I'd not be surprised if the game just had a super small print run and managed to sell what little stock was provided so hopefully Sega is happy with that?

I really like the sub-plots that go along with taking over and competing with each rival cabaret club. The whole vinegar thing was hilarious.

I do wish the new girls played a bigger role though. Yuki and Ai always seem to be there to participate and play a role, but Saki, Hibiki have yet to really show up during any of the events.

Probably because in theory, Yuki and Ai will be around for when you take on all the other clubs, whereas the same is not true for the others since you can tackle them in any order. So Saki showing up for Hibiki's substory would be weird if you haven taken over Jupiter's turf, and vice-versa for Hibiki/Mercury. (I think I got those club/woman matchups right?)

Didn't manage to finish all the Cabaret Club stuff so I don't know if they all show up at the end to the cabaret club storyline or not (or if there even is one).

Oh that makes more sense then. I never considered that they could be done out of order. I guess there is no order really.
