Any VancouverGaf heading to Metrotown tonight to see the Sedin twins at the NHL11 launch?
I'm 5 min from Metrotown. What time are they there?

[edit] Tomorrow, Dastardly. 9-11pm. Lineups start at 8pm. Game goes on sale at midnight. Dunno yet if I'm going to go

So I had a chance to play NHL Slapshot on the Wii today with fellow NHL GAFfer Kassatsu. Of course, he picked the Pens and I picked the Sabres.

The game was a hard fought battle, but Kass prevailed due to his previous experience with the game
and more so, I suspect, having better hockey game skills than mine
. It was 2-1 -- I scored with like 11 seconds left to make it look respectable.

The game itself was pretty fun. The controls would take some getting used to -- I constantly checked when I meant to shoot -- but it wasn't bad by any means. The players might not look like their real-life selves, but there are reflections on the ice now. Take that 2K Series.

All in all, best hockey on the Wii so far (unless Blades of Steel is on the VC and I somehow overlooked that).

It has been for almost 2 years.

I'm really on the fence with Slapshot. I might wait to pick it up.

I figured it would have been. I should have just looked it up before posting, but meh. So this is likely the 2nd best on the Wii.

I enjoyed it enough to recommend it to Wii-only owners. Hockey enthusiasts, though, should consider it a secondary type of purchase. One that will be good for parties, your parents/kids, or for the hockey-sim challenged.

Yeah sorry, meant tomorrow. I want me a Sedin photo op. My buddy and I are going after work (from Granville) tomorrow night.
Too bad Lolongo isn't going to be there. You could give him some pointers.

I've now totally given up on the farce that will be the NBA season. (Plus I live in the Grizzly TV market, which should be explanation enough.) I'm going to follow hockey in 10-11. I've been to one Predators game about ten years ago, and the last time I watched much NHL was back in college in the late 90s. I started watching when I was playing NHL 94 every day and was captivated by the Rangers winning the cup. So a nominal Rangers fan, but now I live in the Predators TV market. I know they made the playoffs, but I just can't make myself interested in them. I want to follow a team in a real hockey city.

I need an interesting East Coast team to follow. Any suggestions? I'll be getting Center Ice so it can be any team. I just need east coast because I don't stay up late enough to consistently watch a west coast team. I don't want to watch the Rangers because of the Dolan stink (I live in Memphis remember. No longer want to follow team run by an idiot.)

Also any good book recommendations about the modern NHL?

They've made the playoffs 5 of the last 6 years. Only 3 other teams have done that. they've far and away been the best team of the last expansion. havent won a playoff round, but they probably gave chicago their toughest test outside of the finals, wings fans might even say the same from 07-08. oh and they play in the western conference, where hockey is, just better

preds should actually be an interesting team to follow this year. shipped out aging, concussion prone arnott and brought in the younger and faster lombardi, who many had pegged as the #1 center available in free agency. preds are a work etchic/heart and soul type team, while they'll miss arnott's shot, the speed and two way play of lombardi is a great fit in their system. the kid's have got to step it up this year and we've got some great prospects and probably one of, if not the, deepest defensemen prospect pool in the league.

the real hockey city i can't argue :( preds-age shall remain an army of one!!

If you want an interesting East coast team i think you should take a look at Tamba Bay, But since you want a team in a real Hockey market that shouldnt be an option though:/
Honestly as fan of the Western Conference i must admit that i have a hard time to find interesting East Coast team, Philly is stacked, Pens got the sissy and the Geno(not much else;)) But i actually dont find them that interesting.

Boston i a classic team, that have some problems right now with the cap(Tim Thomas says hi), but they just had the second highest pick in the draft and Burkie is probably going for the highest this year. So Boston maybe?

Thanks for the info. That is consistent performance. But the inability to win a playoff round sounds a lot like a certain basketball franchise in Memphis. Something in the water in Tennessee?

Ontario-GAF is LeafsTV just replaying the entire 2009-2010 season the last few days?

Yeah, me and DopeyFish discussed it in the other page. Pretty neat.

I think it's just crazy how much LeafsTV I've watched this past summer. It helps that they're literally showing hockey games 24/7 instead of the usual garbage programming.

Shouldn't Leafs games be considered garbage programming as well?

Yeah this is the most I've ever watched this channel period. Of course the trade off is swallowing a lot of sadness seeing the Leafs losing over and over again. :(

It's only been like this for the past two weeks. :lol They used to only show Leaf victories (from the 2002/2003 season to the 2009/2010 season). Of course when you decide to start televising all of last season... there's gonna be a lot of tough losses to watch.

The other day the Minnesota-Leafs game was on, and I refused to watch it since I rememberd it having the most pathetic end to a hockey game ever.
Leafs had a 6-on-3 powerplay at the end with one minute left and could not score

Marvie: =p

Just a question about NHL 2011 on the XBox 360 - do they have downloadable roster updates? And how often do they have those? Or are we stuck making all of the trades/number changes?

I think NHL 2010 had something like 10 roster updates throughout the year, including one at the beginning of the season to fix any transactions that happened between finalized rosters of the game and the season start.

Preds seem like they would be a fun team to follow, don't sell Nashville short because it's not a traditional hockey city, Carolina won a cup a few years back so it's possible especially with a severely weakened Western Conference this year.

Yeah, apparently there's already a roster update and a patch for some problems from the demo ready to go for NHL 11.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
That's another reason I usually wait to pick up the NHL series until later in the year--the league and player's association don't allow rookies to appear until they've actually played a certain number of games. I believe it's the only sport to do so.

I'm pretty sure all the rookies (or most?) are in the game since EA has rights to all CHL players

I tried to pull the goalie so we could goto OT but the stupid EA guy came over :( The hockey tape they gave out for an OT win was weak though.

Yep, normally that sucks, but it's fixed this year. Seguin was already in the demo. I'm gonna try and pick mine up at midnight tonight.

Yup.

I wasn't sure if I was going to whore myself to this year's iteration, but goddamn...CHL! :(

That cockblocking bastard.

Was good to meet you though. Rematch next year.

I just lined up for 4 hours to get a photo op with the Sedins.

No I didn't. I got free drinks on the last shift with the good bar manager before the terrible bar manager gets back instead.

Hopefully I'll accidentally run into them at Burnaby 8 rinks before/after stick-n-puck or drop-in sessions instead.

I read the Hockey News season preview mag yesterday and I think I'll go with the Caps. They will play a lot of games at 6 central, a lot of games will be in HD on Versus and NBC a lot, and have a big fan base and Ovechkin. And I am immune to charges of bandwagonism because I have endured years of Ole Miss fandom including personally witnessing the Bryce Drew shot and including Saturday's latest debacle, which was a low point even among my low points.

My thoughts exactly;

I want to see D'Amigo, Kadri and Keith Aullie!!

How about Gregg mckegg?!

People don't realize how good of a player he is- he put up points just under kadri but is nearly 2 years younger - was originally duking it out with hall as top prospect but he injured his leg and didn't do well his 1st year - he lit up the ohl in the 2nd half just like kadri and hall plus the added benefit of him being a strong 2 way player

He played last year at 17 years old but his birthday was just before draft

Mckegg, regardless of how highly I talk about kadri... Is probably the best and easily the most underrated prospect the leafs have
