Games where the final boss is actually the most difficult required boss

Oooh, that's a good one.

I also think Skyward Sword's last boss was definitely toughest.

this one. Skyward Sword.

the final boss actually required you to be good with the shield bash mechanic to be able to defeat him in a decent way instead of dying by taking hits. no boss before this was hard enough to require good shield use since most bosses could be defeated in some other way or you could tank hits and beat them before they killed you.

Maybe I'm wrong, but the optional freaking-hard boss is mostly a RPG trope no?
So I think that most action games have the last boss as the hardest one

Etrian Odyssey III, of course there are a couple final bosses anyways based on what path you go, but one of them is easily the most difficult required boss in the game.

Red Steel 2. IIRC it was a massive difficulty spike.

Thanks for posting this. I actually should finish that game now.

I submit the following:

Goddamn that last level was hard.

For me it was Metal Gear Rising. Everything up until that boss I had done pretty good with but fuck him lol.

the final boss in Tales of Xlillia comes to mind.

I was playing on hard.

2 bosses at once and I think both heal and revive each other iirc.

Armstrong. Metal Gear Rising. Before I learned how to Parry correctly.

You can parry him? Man, I just brute forced that fight for 4 hours straight - so much fun.

As a kid Sigma in MMX, had to fight 3 bosses at once and the last one only has one weakness, which does 1 pixel while you're frantically climbing & avoiding claws & lightning bolts.

I had this problem in BOTH DS3 & Bloodborne with Soul Of Cinder & Gherman, no idea why but really struggled with those two while everyone (including DLC for BB) I breezed through with no problem. I guess because I'm horrible at parrying / reposting?

Radec. Killzone 2.

Yes, 1000 times yes, but one of the most epic boss fights ever.

Sonic 2 Death Egg Robo

Not only does he require 12 hits compared to the 8 for other bosses but you have to fight him with no rings and if you get hit you loose a life and have to restart the level from the beginning.

However he is even harder in "Knuckles in Sonic 2" as this is due to Knuckle's jump height being too low to hit it normally, so the player must do it as he lands, because as it crouches, it is low enough for Knuckles to jump and hit him.

Not a traditional narrative-driven game, but Seth in Street Fighter IV allowed me to test exactly how structurally-sound my Dualshock 3 actually was.

Hmmm...epic I suppose, but I feel like the mechanics of the game that you learned up until that point do not help at all in that fight. Like there is no cover, and weapons are spread out so it's basically got to be played like a DOOM boss fight, while the rest of the game was get behind cover and shoot thing. I found it more infuriating than epic, but you had to feel pretty proud getting through that fight at the end of the day.

And oldie, but goodie -- Shinobi. :)

The final boss requires that you've actually fully mastered the 'tate' mechanic in the game.

Mega Man X4 is really easy by Mega Man X standards... until you get to Sigma and then his final form kicks your sorry ass (at least if you play the game the correct way and play as Zero).

Shinobi PS2.

I remember the first time I fought the fucker, it was completely brutal. Now it's basically muscle memory. Good shit.

Edit:

Bingo

It's been so long since I played and I hardly remember anything about Jet Force Gemini, but iirc the final boss is a real piece of work and way harder than the other bosses.

Morrigan Stark

Arrogant Smirk
Dark Souls 3

Breath of Fire 3

Xenogears

Phantasy Star IV

Shining Force 2 (maybe 1, too)

Ristar

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon

Disagree about Bloodborne.
Gehrman
wasn't that hard and is technically optional anyway. For mandatory boss, they're all pretty easy but I'd say Father G was the hardest for me the first time. Maybe Rom, though she never gave me much trouble. Pretty much all the difficult bosses in Bloodborne are optional.

Ys: The Oath in Felghana
Shit yes.

Bayonetta 1, that boss fight was so long and hard.
Also Mario RPG games have insanely hard final bosses.
