Testing the Limits of Mass Effect Andromeda's Character Creator

It is not that you can't, but it is a lot more work. DD has absolute trash animation when it comes to usables and interactable elements (not there is much of it), say how far a character needs to stand in order to interact with an object believably. Same goes for inquisition, some of the cutscenes look really sloppy because they have to account for all these differences.

As people demand more lifelike and detailed animations, you'll see fewer games offer changes to character height. You'd need an extremely robust procedural animation system in order to make it not extremely time consuming to account for height (and all the body proportions that stem from that).

This is not to say that there won't be any games, but it is a significant source of labour that needs to be accounted for (provided you want it to look good).
ME:A animations aren't looking too good either, and they don't have the character creation features of the mentioned games.

Regardless, the punch still isn't actually connecting which is pretty bad. At least angle it better so we can't tell.

It doesn't need to connect, because in the split second (literally) that it's on screen, the punch read perfectly fine. Doing work to make the motion capture date connect is gross a waste of effort.

It might be better if I showed a diagram.

Left and right image is the left perspective.
Middle image is the right perspective.

It makes a difference in that meshes look warped or otherwise enlarged or shrunk when under the perspective camera, so they cannot be compared to orthographic. I should say this is how the left and right images have Shepherd's torso looks enlarged whilst his legs and head seemingly cone inwards, and this is evidence of the perspective camera.

I don't think that's right whatsoever. If you look at the way the feet are positioned, it's evidently nigh-on the same perspective. The same goes for the head and the way it's looking. You're not seeing the bottom of his chin, the head is looking straigh-on.

Like, unless I'm just completely misunderstanding you, you mean that if your angle is from the bottom looking up, your model will look more elongated, right? I've personally never head "orthographic" used, but when looking up, it's defined as "a way to project a 3D object on a 2D plane by using multiple angles".

Personally don't care about changing character height, but the CC itself doesn't seem as powerful as Inquisition's.
Then again, Dragon Age always had a stronger CC than the Mass Effect series.

Damn. The female preset heads are really awful, and the adjustment options do not seem to allow that much variation, either way.
(For example, you can't even change the brows/mouth/nose/eye's shapes). DAI definitively was way better, on that front.

While both Mass Effect 2 and 3 had just a few custom templates, they all somehow looked a bit more decent as well:

For Andromeda, Head 2, 7, 8 and maybe 9 at least look like human beings. The eye area is the worst part in all, by far.
Hope Mods can provide more distinctive looks. Disappointing, to be honest.

Too bad you can't use standard Sarah or Scott for a template and tweak from there (even just hair style/color). I guess I won't customize the main character at all for my first play.

Wow, ME2/3 have much less faces variation than I remembered.
Yeah, but not only it allow for randomization - you could actually customize several parts of the face to a much larger degree.

Here, apparently you can't even fundamentally change the shape of anything (except hair) beyond the head presets and some distance/size/color values.

Bioware has that stance since the first ME, dunno why.
You can edit the pre-defined female Shepard face on ME2 and 3. (You can see it in the video I linked above.)

Haven't had the chance to watch it yet but I hope its black people friendly.

Well, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is one of the fem preset heads that is black is the best looking preset.

The bad news is in the grand scheme of things they are all horrid abominations.

stop posting that GIF. Actual in-game speed:

RNzlSR.gif
This is a low-framerate GIF that skips the frame of impact.

I haven't been able to view the link yet, but judging by the responses. It seems like it's crap. Which I feared and beyond disappointed.

Looks fucking horrible.

Easily worse than DAI's, and I still had to do an unfair amount of work in DAI's to get something I liked.

So they made Ryder approximately the size of a dakimakura.
Come on with this already. It's been debunked. First it's Shep who's a bit out of proportion. Second it's the camera lens that makes Ryder look a bit squat. But hey it's an Andromeda thread so let's all just pile on right?

Kinda missing the point of the joke there, but sure.

We can't customise:

Jaw height
Brow width
Brow type
Brow shape
Nose type
Nose tip
Nose bridge
Mouth type
Eye shape
Eye size
Cheekbone height

I just don't understand. I really don't.

Expecting to have a realistic judgment from the response of GAF regarding anything from Mass Effect Andromeda is... unrealistic.
It's a good CC, not as powerful as you may have hoped. Better than the trilogy, not as good as Inquisition's.

The speed is correct though. You won't notice that the hit didn't entirely connect when playing the game. A video game doesn't need to be held to the scrutiny of an infinitely repeating GIF, even at full speed.

So why does the animation have to be so bad? It's not like it's Hollywood where two actors are pulling their punches. Characters in a video game should be able to connect square with their target. It's just sloppy and lazy.

Myeah... that's exactly what it is. Motion capture.

And no, it's not sloppy and lazy. When you're working an 80 hour week and have deadlines to meet, let's see where you place "fix fist not connecting in this 0.5 second long clip in which the fix would result in no appreciable difference" on the totem pole of importance.

For me the unbelievable aspect is that it would be chosen for a scene in a trailer to promote the game.

Real talk here. What percentage of people do you imagine even gave a shit about that? No one in their actual right mind even goes in looking for flaws like that. That's some Simpsons-like comicbook guy type shit.

It doesn't bother me, if that's your worry - I can't freakin' wait for this game and a few dodgy animations should be an accepted part of gaming by everyone at this point. HOWEVER, I do think it's crazy that of all the footage they had at their disposal they would choose a scene with a glitch in it for promo footage. Don't you think?

It's been pretty consistent in the ME vids - Pingu lips, backwards guns, thrown punches, etc. It just blows my mind because after all this time and with an entire game of footage they could surely do better than that. Maybe that's unreasonable of me, but if I was head of marketing for this game and that was the content of the promo vids I'd be disappointed.

Why do faces/skin look so.....plastic like. They legit look like plastic dolls rather then skin.

Does frostbite not do subsurface scattering, etc?

Tell me you can at least change the hair of the default faces.

I can't go through the game with McDouche Bro Ryder's hair.

Thank god I'm on PC for the potential mod.

Any info on the male presets ?

Are we still talking about that punch GIF? It's not a glitch. It's probably motion captured, and not adjusted because why bother when, again, there would be no appreciable difference when playing the game.

Glitch, motion capture limitation, whatever - my point is: why would you put that in a trailer? If you want that punch scene, use it in a ManRyder video where it actually connects. But hey, this is drifting way off topic! Custom faces!
