Mass Effect Andromeda Graphical Downgrade

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Eyes are wrong, eyebrows are wrong, chin is wrong...etc

She's been massively effected
The model likely doesn't even look like that photo without all the makeup and painstaking effort to cover up blemishes, this is a scan of her so you don't know what you're talking about. Also the angles are completely different. That picture is disegenuous and counter-intuitive to genuine discussion about the modeling in this game.

If Ryder is modelled after this woman then I want to see her without makeup, maybe that's the real "issue" here? They just went with no makeup for this game?

Do we know who Peebee is modelled after?

I love these threads!

Shows how insanely ignorant people are about game development and lighting. Even slight subtle lighting can HONESTLY change a ps3 looking game to a ps4 looking one and vice versa. And lighting changes allllllll the time, especially cinematics. Its a completly idiotic comparison and I hate it. I mean I love it.

It's not even a lack of game development knowledge, it's a lack of knowledge about how lighting works in general, lighting changes and changing angles can completely change the look of an individual

Same applies to a digital double of a person.

Since people are talking about differences made a quick GIF comparison. Eye makeup and eyebrows changed, along with removing fisheye distortion to a degree.

I dunno, Ryder has looked weird to me in many photos and most of the videos I've seen, but here she looks perfectly fine in my opinion. It's actually jarring how normal she looks compared to many of the other things I've seen.
It's almost like people keep choosing the worst possible instances to screenshot and the issue isn't inherently the model.

Oh, man, that freaks me out a little.
Yep that's how lights and faces work.

Yep. The Order got the same goddam thing. There was a picture posted next to another picture of the same scene, but the "better one" didnt even have lighting and was actually using WORSE models. The skin shaders and hair cards were all much better as well. But since the comparison picture was taken out of context and a screenshot from a stream, everyone freaked out. Gamers are terrible at this whole "downgrade" thing, everyone is paranoid. Nobody is trying to "trick you".... it's game development.

Like the video of a woman freaking out because there is a rainbow in her sprinkler, it's not the government poisoning you, it's your own ignorance getting you in trouble.

Well damn. I'm usually not one to hop on the downgrade train. But those eyes looked so much better before. And can't have been THAT taxing.

So late to this, but the OP looks like it was just lighting change which happens a lot, or the new pictures were taken at different time of the day if that's possible in the game.

I'm just curious as to what it is someone would find weird with the character model in that photo. A lot of the stuff we see from the game immediately strikes as weird, but I'm looking at that photo in full resolution, staring at it, and really cannot figure out what is wrong with it. If it's some technical facet that I'm not keen to I can understand, but just from the uncanny valley standpoint I'm not getting any weird vibes at all from it and it completely contrasts the weirdness of the other stuff we're seeing.

Thats very creepy
I tend to find these fascinating.

It's likely uncanny valley.

Its funny how people just noticed this...From the first trailer i saw i knew that the faces are off and look really stupid but no one was saying sh*t

People said a lot of things about the infamous"you first" trailer.

Animation and models make faces look lifeless and dumb.

Really tired of people taking cherry picked pictures, come on now you're comparing a press screen with a cherry picked screenshot:

Fem Ryder's face model is fine, it's the animation that's the issue, not the models themselves for the main cast.

Need your eyes checked. The model is the same. Putting more shadows on her doesn't change what people are seeing in both.

The thing that bugs me the most (besides the weird animations) is that the skin in this game looks off for some reason. It reminds me of Fallout 4, where something about the PBR or subsurface scattering or something makes the skin look oddly like latex, which obviously doesn't help the facial animations where they oddly contort.

This and the eyes are the things that really pop out. Is it unreasonable to think this might be fixed by a later patch...animations we just have to live with. Well at least on PC some texture mods will be created asap.

The skins look awfully like plastic to me, for some reason. They're... how should I say this, inhuman? It's like they're artificial skin plastered over a robot or something, not how real skin feels like.

Yeah, that's bugged me a bit too. It's like wax statues coming to life.

Just watched a video of the PC version maxed out and thought it looked quite nice. The lighting seemed much better than the console versions, which went a long way towards making the characters look more natural.

Haven't watched the vid yet but that sounds promising. I recently built a new PC and would LOVE to see how the game looks on there, but I feel like I have to get it on console knowing friends will want to do MP on there down the road. (CSB)

So far has it been only Horizon Zero dawn that wasn't downgraded this gen?

Well, you can say that. Its truly amazing how they just make it look better in the Final game.

not the best, but imma play this shit anyway

H:ZD had some downgrades, nothing crazy though. Grass and stuff. Someone posted it in the OT.

It was debunked later, if you are talking about shadows from the grass.

That doesn't look like a downgrade, just a few lighting changes and the usual difference you see between cutscenes vs regular gameplay.

The character models don't look great though. Hair, eyes, skin, some animations etc. It's not going to earn awards for it's graphics.

I'm not sure why people expected it to. Some nice space vistas aside, the series has never been known for that.

People should give this video a watch. Jump fast forward randomly to avoid spoilers. There are some lengthy conversations by the end of the video where facial animation is not really an issue, instead of focusing in handpicked GIFs looping every 3 seconds.

Is there more footage from the standard PS4 version, besides the Gamespot footage?

I know I'll enjoy the game itself. It's just that the performance and the choppines in that Gamespot video is making my hand hover over the cancel pre-order button.

The animations aren't the best but calling this a graphical downgrade is hyberbole. Seeing the early previews I am hopeful this is going to be the best reviewed mass effect game.
