To me, this looks like some internal reference animation, like, a first pass for them to use as a reference when it's time to polish everything, but that time never came and the game was released as soon as it was content complete.

Because it's not just typical bad, a lot of the animations are like they didn't even try.

There seems to be a fundamental problem with the way they did faces and facial animation rigs in the videos I've watched, but the quality varies. They'd have to go through every single frame. You might be better off asking for a new game, unless Bioware Montreal has some easily implementable secret magic animation technology that I've never heard about. It would probably be a band-aid to the animations if they made better eyes at the very least.

Welp, at least we can laugh at the gifs, webms and videos.

Just finished watching a bunch of footage, including GiantBomb's.

It's just horribly unpolished. You would think that the devs would realize that the faces are terrible and pick better default camera angles. They just keep zooming into the poor textured, badly lit, dead faces. Like zooming in really far. It's like they want me to hate it.

It definitively seems like EA was ready to push this game out as soon as they could, so all of bioware could be on board for star wars. Wouldn't be surprised if they see ME as kind of pointless now with star wars in their hands

good guess at an explanation. either that, or previously used tools are now being used by people who haven't mastered them? no idea how stable/unstable the bioware staff situation's been. but the previous gen's games should absolutely not look more refined....

Pure gold thread, but jokes aside I think I'm gonna skip this one. This thread surely helped.

considering the fact that i've always seen this series as being nothing more than extremely cheesy sci-fi pulp, i really have no problem with piling on the inadvertent/unintentional hilarity :) ...

Nope, I don't care if it's Mass Effect (which at one time was my most favorite series) I can't support this level of mediocrity.

For you.
Wrong. Frostbite 3 is just a bad engine for such a game. It is great for Battlefield, but it is not the right choice for an RPG. They should have decided for Unreal Engine 4. Facial animations would look way better then.
Even Battlefield has better facial animations than this.

When I first saw the gifs I presumed it was just an early build but really disappointing to see how bad bioware has gone with the animations at least. Wasn't planning to buy the game anytime soon but not looking good from what I've seen so far.

I've been arguing this since the disarm image was released. I don't understand how Bioware can't see how bad this looks the way they present this. They need to realize their limitations when it comes to animations and hide it A LOT better with smart camera work.

mmmmm that's not really true, it's about the animators and the standards they are to be working towards rather than the engine itself.

That has nothing to do with the engine technology. Their animation methodology is just bad.

DA:I was on frostbite though, facial animations weren't this bad.

"As you've seen, we are willing to make moves in launch date if we feel it's necessary to deliver the right player experience. And our guidance assumes that Mass Effect continues to be in this [fiscal] year, but it gives us some flexibility that we might choose to move it either a week or three or four or five months if we have to based on what we want to make sure in terms of delivering the right experience for the player."

"We also know we need the right amount of time to make sure we deliver everything the game can be and should be – that's our commitment from all of us to all of you."

I'm getting flashbacks to Assassin's Creed Unity here...

I can't wait for the romance scenes.

What bugs me most about this isn't the walk, but rather the guy on the right who's frozen in place.

Can't kill the hype! I'm still expecting this to be in my 8/10 range even with this weird ass animations.

I've talked to few colleagues who finished the game already (reviews etc) and none of them didn't notice anything like that so hopefully it's not so visible when you are playing.

The craziest thing is how easy this would have been to fix. All they had to do was darken the iris and increase the iris size. That's all I've done to the following image and she all of a sudden doesn't look completely insane.

I quickly/horribly shoved Aloy's larger iris/smaller pupil eyes over the existing pale irises and wandering pupils:

BioWare just got removed from my AAA list.
This is unacceptable for a 5 year development cycle.

This is what hurts me the most, they worked on this game for 5 years, 5 YEARS... for this jank fest.

The game itself probably will be decent, but holy shit, those animations are simply not good enough when they legitimately look worse from their previous games.

theoretically on pc someone should just be able to edit all of the eye textures and darken them, it's not going to magically fix everything but it should give more definition to the eyes.

a simple radial gradient over the white part would be fine

It's weird. Like you can clearly see that the tech behind the face animation is good but the animators clearly didn't have the time and/or talent to make it remarkable.

Like human faces Irl can contort and move around quite a bit... But we ain't doing all that with a normal casual conversation lol.

It's almost like we got the tech let's make sure to use it on 100% for everything!

And yet people are saying Dragon Age: Inquisition was more impressive than this with its face models, and wasn't that game solid overall with its technical performance? It's not like there's no precedent for RPGs on Frostbite.

worth noting that dragon age was early frostbite 3, but yeah, the engine really isn't to blame for this, if they wanted good character rendering they could have either worked on it themselves or asked the dev to add it to the engine early on when they realised it wasn't where they needed it to be.

I noticed that none of the characters blink outside of cutscenes. It's weird because their eyes do have idle animations but no blinking.

Also their eye shaders are shit, it looks like a flat texture with barely any translucency.

I was laughing so hard watching Blood trying to ignore the T pose.

There is no way I ever would have imagined that the jank, dialogue and animations would regress so far from what the trilogy offered, but I don't think there is any denying it at this point. I am still hoping that there is a gem here and that I will enjoy it despite the flaws, but I really expected a hell of a lot more from Frostbite and BioWare in 2017 on the technical side of things. Some of this shit is just embarrassing and is beyond glossing over.

"BioWare" is just the name of the organisation, they are different teams within that umbrella.

It's still a AAA title, at AAA budget with a 5 year dev cycle.
Smells like giant mismanagement then. There are no excuses

What hurts is if the game underneath this is actually good, but the gameplay impressions haven't been stellar as well.
Seems like a dud package all around. I almost want to cry while listening to the Vigil (ME1 theme) song

Man even Playstations preview they just uploaded has messed up animations and a character dropping through the floor.

waiting for some patches if any...

Hmm, pretty sure it was Frostbite 3

Edit: ahh, you edited? anyway, yeah, I don't see how early frostbite 3 would be better at the facial animations than frostbite 3 now though.

It's like a Bioware B-team was given a AAA budget. It feels like a lot of money went into this game just not in the right places and not enough talent to pull off what they were aiming for.
