So, to the best of your knowledge, DA4 is in the same hands as Inquisition was? I loved Inquisition and I hope the Andromeda team gets nowhere near the Dragon Age IP.

Aaryn Flynn and many others at Bioware have consistently said Dragon Age 4 has not been confirmed and it's not for sure it's going to be made. They could be deliberately be misleading of course, because the game is a long long way off and they don't want people expecting it any time soon but it is worrisome.

David Gaider left Bioware not long after Dragon Age: Inquisition was released and he spent a little bit of time with the team working on the new IP. I can't imagine Dragon Age without David Gaider heavily involved which worries me too because I love that series.

I don't know what Bioware's plans are in the future or what EA's plans for Bioware are but much of the old guard has left the company and that is sad to see

Can a patch actually fix animation?

If there was such a patch, depending on the scale of the animation re-rigging (i.e. limited to specific aspect of the face like eyes or eyebrows versus the whole skeleton), it would be possible....but that would be quite a lot of work - again, depending on the scale of the changes.

edit: It's also irrelevant, at least in the context of the Day 1 patch 'fixing' things.

D1 patch is already in the Early Access version.

They're also saying that a later patch at an unknown date will introduce more options for the character creation tool.

Which is a ridiculous approach to a RPG to fix a shitty character creation tool months later when people have already played the game and made their characters. It's weird design priority and tells me the game is rushed for release.

I'd hold off a bit, you never know the game itself may be great, just buggy.

But I do think we can all safely say now that this is why the marketing cycle was the way it was. There is no way development was smooth if its releasing with this many issues. Clearly the reason EA were so hush hush on this until the last second had nothing to do with a "late push" and more to do with, trying to clean the game up and make it presentable.

Considering how much gets finished / polished in the last push for AAA games, I'd hate to see what shape this was in even say 4 months ago

Yeah, I never said that it won't be good (I have it pre-ordered), just that with how little they've shown, I fully expected it to be an unpolished game. But people really wanted to believe that it wasn't true, and EA were just keeping their cards close to their chest. (I would've happily eat crow if that was the case)

Still, I'm really looking forward to this so hopefully it'll be a great game, even if it is unpolished, weird and buggy at launch.

But then the question is why would they ever release a preview build that didnt have such a massive patch that fixes everything, if such a patch existed.

The lead designer "suspects" that the day one patch is not included in the trial.

So, I think this just cements the idea that it is better to buy the game (as with many AAA games nowadays) some time down the line after the game has been patched several times and resembles something that the fans deserve after 5 years of development.

Perhaps the GoTY edition then (lol).

Umm... then it's actually worse news that I'd thought.

Because they have to push something out the door (because EA is pissed its taking so long, or whatever other reason there might be), and just said 'maybe we'll fix it if enough people bitch to affect sales'.

Now, obviously that's a pretty cynical take, and not one I fully agree with, but at the same time, there's definitely evidence being shown of various things either not being finished, or at least not completely polished.

But as my edit said, the Day 1 patch is already in the Early Access version, so there's no sweeping changes/fixes (yet).

No fucking way...

Naaah, nah, nope.

Well then...

It's like saying "wait for us to fix the game and then buy it". It's never a good outlook to say stuff like this before release. Especially if the date of said patch is unknown.

It's pretty screwed up, considering that's a huge aspect of most RPGs.

I'm seeing people make some good models, but imagine what more people could make with those additions. Still, it's pathetic that it's something being considered after the fact, coupled with poor facial animations to boot.

Is she giving birth? D:

My lord what a ride this one is.

There are people that badly want the game to succeed and dismiss all the problems the game shows and there are people that desperately want the game to fail and, in turn, they do not acknowledge the good stuff.

Parts of the game does not look good, some glitches, bugs and weird animation do exist.
As far as i can tell by watching all those gameplay videos, it seems that writing might be problematic.

However it is too early to reach for a verdict although the signs do not seem to be good.

Patience.

I remember hearing people saying ''Well at least nowadays the developers can patch and fix the game later on, unlike old games that can not be fixed once released.''
To some degree this is ture but I think most devs stop giving a shit once they got your money.

Just look at Assasssin's Creed Unity and Just Cause 3 on PS4.

I can't believe I'm defending Unity but, to be fair, they did improve the performance quite a bit with patches.

fixed it for you

God bless you, sir. *cries*

I find it surprising that some journalists are saying they think the writing and general animation is acceptable. The stuff I have witnessed (about 5 hours of gameplay) is enough for me to not want to play it at full price.

I find it surprising that people think the game looks gorgeous, when the game has so much texture/geometry/model pop in.
Just watch Giant Bomb's stream. Driving through a barren desert and tiny bushes just pop-in right in front of you:

This example isn't as bad either, but you can clearly see the middle tires clip through the new Mako. This stuff drives me nuts if there is enough of it--and boy there is plenty.

The clipping is just unacceptable. How do you not go back to the drawing board with the design of the Mako the moment you realize it's doing that? Fucking, four years ago.

>When you're in a rush to get to a work meeting and end up as a herald of Galactus.

Utterly slayed.

Maybe she is supposed to have weird eyes. It happens.

Yeah! She and every single other person in the game!

Another fine example where just darkening the irises makes a huge difference:

Another example of an incredibly simple fix for an issue that was either overlooked or ignored.

I was actually pretty set on buying this day one, but then I saw that giantbomb video of the first couple hours and just....no.

I'll play it eventually, but I'd much rather just wait for possible fixes and updates. They're other new games to play in Q1.

Yeah thats what I was asking.

Bioware has been on a downhill for a while now, and this might just be the lowest point yet. There's no way this game should be looking this bad at this point. This isn't a DA2 rushed development situation either.
But is it really a steady decline? They made mediocre games before DA2. Or has everybody really forgotten about that mediocre Sonic RPG for the Nintendo DS?

Even Dragon Age II was not this sloppy. It was just rushed and reused too many assets. Other than that, I still had fun with it.

What do a lot of screenshots of this game I see have those wierd backwards L black bars?
It's a bug. The game there is what the actual rendering resolution is. The images/videos are 1080p for some reason the screenshots aren't taking the up scaling into account and we'll you get that.

You can really taste the insecurity.

Oh wow, the MP and shootbang seems to be the best thing about it... that's nice. Yeah, that's really the main thing "real fans" fell in love with about Bioware games so many years ago.

Gotta agree with this. No one stays on top forever and BioWare has lost its reputation as one of must-play producers of RPGs. With CDprojekt and Guerrilla stepping up in the AAA space and a slew of successful indie CRPGs, there are great games out there. They just aren't BioWare games.

Goddamn this game looks like a trainwreck. I personally hopped off the Bioware train after the ME3 fiasco but this is taking laughable to a whole new level.

I went from 0 interest in this to thinking I might have to try it. This much jank in a "AAA" game will be nothing but entertaining.
