Manga is way more diverse and varied than I had imagined

This is why I get so frustrated when people use anime and manga as terms only for the stuff they don't like.

Not manga (anime only), but you may want to check out Paranoia Agent.

No idea what the Anime-GAF consensus of it is, but I enjoyed it when it used to get played on...Adult Swim I think it was?

You need to watch all of Satoshi Kon's animated movies if you haven't yet. Start with Perfect Blue and then dive into the rest.

Every Frame a Painting did a nice video on his editing:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz49vQwSoTE
Have we annoyed every single anime lover on GAF yet? Because if not we clearly haven't posted in enough threads about how Cowboy Bebop should be the first
and last
stop in anime.
Yeah, apparently Akira's trash now. That's all that's left.

No.. shit? So OP was like those folks who think video games are all like Call of Duty, Madden and Super Mario lol I'm currently reading a manga about wine tasting, the subjects in manga are wide ranging.

If you want to give Gundam The Origin a shot, Kadokawa is slowly putting it up on ComicWalker. As fantastic as the actual books are, buying all of it that way costs a small fortune.

Also would highly recommend Nausicaa. If you want to jump into physical manga, this is a great way to do so.

lol cowboy bebop is one of those things I see recommended the most here because it appeals to people who don't like typical anime tropes

Unfortunately most people think the way you originally did OP. The image people think of for anime/manga is that weird big eyes little girls moe type of shit that somehow has become super popular.

Some of my personal favorites include
One Piece (my personal favorite for how it appeals to me, just an amazing sense of adventure and worldbuilding with fun characters and scenarios)
Berserk (I don't know that there's much more that needs to be said on this)
Gintama (Hilarious comedy most of the time, but it can also be fucking awesome when it wants to be. The only thing that stops me from recommending this manga to everybody is that it's a rare case where the anime adaption is so goddamn well done that I'd recommend watching it instead even with the manga's high quality)
Lucifer and the biscuit hammer (aka Hoshi no Samidare. A really fun action coming of age story with an incredibly satisfying ending. Art is kind of middling though unfortunately)
Full Metal Alchemist (great action series)
Kingdom (really fun historical fiction action series that while exaggerated and obviously not to concerned with historical accuracy is still a lot of fun)
My Hero Academia (A fun shonen series with fantastic art and a lot of potential, one of the newer ones on this list)
Vinland Sage (A series with great action, fantastic character development, and an interesting narrative)

As you can see I tend to prefer action series personally, although I have read a number of series in other genre.

Also, if you're interested in a dark new series that you can get into before it gets an anime and becomes super popular, The Promised Neverland has been a great thriller so far at 32 chapters.

The gundam origin manga if you have a b&n can all be bought at a great prices due to their frequent book sales. I am talking the whole series for 250

And comments like this are how you keep people out, not bring people in.

It mystifies me how many fans want our communities to stay closed by being off-putting when someone discovers how good something can be.

I think 250 bucks being a "great price" just proves his point about the collection. Lol!

You need some Billy Bat in your life.
For all of his faults ‎Naoki Urasawa‎ is a genius.

Sounds like you're more into Seinen series. Some of my favorites that haven't been mentioned:

I Am a Hero: An actual good zombie apocalypse series. Currently ongoing, and is being released in English.

Azumi: Follows a young female assassin in Feudal Japan. Finished it's long run 8 years ago, but is unlikely to see an official English release. It's being regularly scanlated though.

Hinamatsuri: A young girl with telekinetic powers falls into life with a Yakuza member. Some of the funniest shit I've ever read, but also has a lot of touching moments. Currently ongoing with no official English release, but hopefully it will in the future.

That is a great price for a hardcover series. The books go for 30 bucks regular price and only have a 15-20 percent discount on Amazon/IST.

Then again I collect absolute hc

Yeah. I don't care for stuff like 'anime' being used as an adjective, though anime itself is obviously much less diverse than manga by the amount of money needed. That said, it's good to be open when people discover there's actually stuff they like. I generally find manga to be a good comparison to books. It's mostly crap, but the sheer amount of it means there's obviously a lot of great stuff. And most likely something you're looking for is out there in some form.

Yeah and the same can be said about animes as well, it is why I shake my head in disgust when people says Anime sucks as If Anime is a a genre

Yeah, I wish anime and manga didn't have these connotations. It's just a medium, and like any medium you've got dreck and gems. I've seen and read some incredibly touching, poignant, mature, awesome, thoughtful, etc etc anime and manga.

Lots of good suggestions and finds in the thread, and good on you for giving it a shot and finding stuff you like OP.

That wasn't a dig at the price. Dude, I know how much Origin is. I'm just saying, he's right in saying it's really pricey! A long series is that only available physically in HC, means that digital is going to be a really good option for a lot of people. Not just the cost being an issue, but shelf space as well.

Goodnight Punpun.

While I love comics, it always impresses me how so many manga artists are able to put so much detail in their panels. You could name hundreds that can make panels like those in manga but not that many in comics.

People will be even more amazed if they get into Hong Kong comics, like Teddy Boy and Dragon Tiger Gate, gangster storyline like a thousand volumes and ongoing.

Ah gotcha! But yea I definitely recommend digital/ or the anime first before sinking in mula.

Welcome to the club.

So when did you start recently reading manga? (I know you mentioned comics in general was 2 years ago).

I know people don't love how a lot of manga end, but I gotta say, Lone Wolf and Cub has pretty much the most perfect ending imaginable. I couldn't imagine changing a thing.

I started buying physical Manga when I decided I wanted to read Monster and thought the Viz Sig editions were cool, so I bought them all, totally worth it. I also bought all of Death Note black edition, and all the One Piece Omnibus that are available. Working on buying all of 20th Century Boys now. Sadly, my favorite series of all time, Shin Angyo Onshi aka Shin-am Heng-uhsah (originally a korean manhwa) does not have an english localization.

Oh, and I recommend Bakuman for some fun Meta stuff.

Anything by Inio Asano is worth your time
Goodnight Punpun is a goddamn masterpiece.
I will second this, Inio Asano is a fantastic mangaka, I would recommend Girl on the Shore, Solanin, and Uchigahara Holograph by him as well.

Another of my favorites is Shuzo Oshimi, who's popular works include Flowers of Evil, Inside Mari, and Happiness. Typically deals in sexual deviency and societal ostracization, and has typically realistic, grounded, yet occasionally surrealist art work.

Not to take anything away from Asano, because his work is absolutely stellar, but he does his backgrounds by redrawing over blown out photos.

I'm such a huge fan of Junji Ito. A lot of his stuff is getting reprinted, which is awesome.
He even did a autobiography of sorts where he tells the story of his fiancé moving in and bringing her two cats. It's so weird despite its pleasant theme.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Blade of the Immortal is a finished series and has some absolutely incredible action and fight sequences.

Goodnight Punpun.

Having read both this and Flowers of Evil last week for the first time ever, I think I'm done with this genre/style of manga for the foreseeable future.

The constant sense of dread/gloom and impending fuckery made reading these manga much more difficult than I anticipated. The catharsis they provided during their respective finales simply wasn't enough for me; I don't think I can ever re-read them from start to finish, lol

Gonna require some "palate cleansers" following those two, probably Horiyama or something.

I recently signed on Hulu for Samurai Jack. Cowboy Bebop and Attack on Titan ended up in my watchlist soon after
