[Gamasutra] Inside the next Xbox: Project Scorpio and its brand-new dev kit

Maximilian E.

AKA MS-Evangelist
Ummmm...

Can i buy the 44CU 6.6 TF and 24GB of RAM version?

Holy Moly - Maracroni!!! Why double the amount of ram when retail is only 12? Seems like e3 will house a bigger surprise and the Higher Sku will be announced! HOLY SHITZZZ

That dev kit looks sexy too. Dayum!

Dev-kits are usually more powerful than retail sku

I'm confused...wasn't Gamasutra going to talk about it with devs ?
Or is that going to release later on or something. There was only 1 short line from Coalition but that's it.

My take from the article is Phil is already planning for what comes after Scorpio. ”I've said, and this is actually true, the planning for what happens after Scorpio in the console space is already underway". That's more confirmation of a true next gen system in the works from Microsoft than I've heard from Sony. Yet many pseudo product managers on gaf have all of sudden pegged PS5 is coming 2018/19 as Scorpio news broke.

The dev kit could be sold As retail And i don't think none will object , The design is Solid.
i think this will be how Scorpio will end up looking.

The sides? That would be a weird choice considering how most entertainment units are designed.

The Gamasutra article mentions that the dev kits blow air out of the back and sides because devs often stack dev kits on top of each other. This led to some devs literally using legos to build spacers for the previous Xbox One dev kits to vent hot air out.

Because it's intended to be relatively exotic and high-end hardware for developers to work with. The extra memory allows for devs to add a lot of telemetry and data for analysis on the system without having to worry about crashing the game due to it going out of memory while trying to just collect information about something else. Do not expect that higher-end hardware to be available to consumers as a part of Scorpio's launch; even non-registered developers will not be able to get access to the kits, as per the article:
However, Microsoft plans to continue what Choudhry calls its ”tiered approach" to sending dev kits out to developers: basically, you have to be either a first-party studio, or a partner dev (via either Microsoft's third-party program or its ID@Xbox indie dev initiative) to get a Scorpio dev kit."

Also you may have missed that the storage listed for the devkit is a 1TB HDD plus a 1TB SSD; again, exotic, high-end, and expensive.

Yes, it's very common.

aww okay .. ill sit back down :(

This is the norm. They were already developing the next xbox and ps when they released the 360 and PS3.

That's your takeaway? Sony has no plans at all even when they've repeatedly said they weren't done with generations and Microsoft has said they were? Even though they now say they aren't anymore?

And you guys wonder why these threads always get derailed. What nonsense.

Zen and Vega is out end of 2017 to the public, ehll ZEN is already out.

Zen at 3 Ghz is under 50 W and is more than 2 x faster than a 2 GHz Jaguar. And Vega blows away polaris, same story as the CPU gulf. Both MS and Sony will be designing ZEN + Vega consoles now, you can bet on it.

So when do you think next gen Ps5 and XB2 will come out MR REAL PRODUCT MGR ?

Ps4 / Xb1 = 2013
PS4 Pro = 2016
Scorpio = 2017

Next Gen = ????. The logic is 2019 for ps5 and 2020 for xb2 is it not ?

Also its a discussion board, are only Phil and Kaz allowed to discuss next gen ?

Anyway Dev kit looks nice, I like big boxes better for cooling

Developers are going to hate this feature if it were in retail units, lol.
Oh gosh that would be hilarious.

Is it just me or are those the same shader core counts as the R9 390(40CU, 2560 shader cores) and 390X(44CU, 2816 shader cores)? Is it possible that MS has been in possession of the missing "490/490X" models all this time? Interesting.

So are the pics of the motherboard and exploded animation mirrored?

Edit: Looks like the motherboard will be down facing, will have the same rear layout as the Xbox One S is the Scorpio with a down facing motherboard. Looking closer one can see the motherboard is down facing by zooming in on the HDMI ports on the shot of motherboard.

Pleased they are keeping the S design. Atheistically, I think the S is one of the best looking consoles ever, full stop.

Interesting bit

It's super obvious after DF's coverage and reading this whole article that MS has put a lot of thought into their mid-gen refresh. Maybe more so than Sony did.

I'll admit that I just look at my Pro nowadays and just question it's existence thinking about what could have been if they waited a bit longer. I plan on making the Scorpio my main machine, replacing the PS4. The power differential between the OG PS4 and One was pretty much the reason I chose Sony over Xbox after all. I ended up getting a One, twice actually, but ended up parting with it due to it just being un-used and overshadowed by Playstation. Now that the tables may turn later this year, and the fact that Xbox has things like EA Access, backwards compatibility, the upcoming Gamepass, and more, has me eager to both switch to Xbox and also eager to see if Sony will even attempt to offer anything similar to what Xbox has. Interesting times ahead indeed. Thanks Gamasutra and Phil for the read!

It appears that Microsoft are going full ham on making up for the disaster that was the launch of the Xbox One.

I'm getting OG Xbox launch vibes from all of this. The console will be a beast.

"You can just write to the original set of [Xbox One] requirements that we have today, and then we'll do the work to make sure that it actually runs better. But [developers] don't have to do any custom work for Scorpio," Choudhry told Gamasutra. ”We're just inviting people to come in and take advantage of it. In terms of requirements if they do decide to take advantage of it, we want that content to run, at minimum the same as but ideally better than it does on the original Xbox One.”

So good.

Much better than Pro's implementation i must say. There seems to be no such thing as pro patches or boost mode, it all works with the hardware just making the games run better automatically. Of course if devs have to unlock software side limitations then that could not be counted here

The hell did they get a 6.6 TF Polaris GPU from? Is it a RX 580?
My opinion...the Scorpio is not RX 480 derative like the Pro with 4CUs added. On the contrary, the full chip for Scorpio is the missing 44CU "RX 490X", and the Scorpio is the 390 successor, the "RX 490". Can't wait for that die shot or layout to see if true. That would be funny on a lot of levels.

Nice that Microsoft is giving devs a kit that is more powerful and telling them to build their games big then scale down. Yet we'll still hear the xbox one is holding back scorpio argument.

I've never seen that original Xbox dev kit before. The clear top is from the DVT beta kits, but I've never seen one of those with a black front. I wonder if it's a Frankenstein job, or some type of Microsoft internal only kit.

Right, i get that. but are they that much higher than retail? if so, then ill back down. but damn, double the amount of RAM is ridic!

Dev kits for the original Xbox had twice the RAM (128 MB compared to 64 MB in retail units).

MS, please make a pink one

Been asking for years now. If you want that Japanese market, do it.

AMD guy on the Wan Show used 480x as the example for performance, but didn't slip up and say that it was.

More people should watch it tbh.

"we want that content to run, at minimum the same as but ideally better than it does on the original Xbox One."

wouldn't that imply they DO need patches or something to take advantage of the scorpio? if MS do all the work to make games run better on the scorpio even if devs do nothing as the quote claims, why would they say they want devs to make games run "at minimum the same as" the standard xbone version?

if MS make games run better regardless, i'd expect zero games in the scorpio to be running "at minimum the same as" xbone. and if that's the case, why even mention it?

Good but MS will all ways have a edge on any PS5 hardware in the X86 CPU to GPU.
Do to owning the DX12 IP hardware in Scorpio. Had MS gone with GDDR5 and not ESRAM and used that die space for more CU rez gate would not be a thing PS4 would be the less powerful now again.

"Even -- and I tease the hardware team about this, because I'm running takehome now, so I have Scorpio at home --- even when you set it on top of your One, it directly portmaps. Like, you literally plug power in, plug HDMI in, it's all exactly the same."

We want to make it as turnkey as possible, for an Xbox One customer. That person has bet on us. They bet on us this generation, and I want to make sure that we're delivering a product for them, in Scorpio, that kind of meets the expectations and the investment that they've made in us.

So Phil already has a Scorpio at home. We are almost there folks.

Yeah, that's what i'm saying. Software side limitations like resolution and FPS caps are still on the table, they seem to not have counted them. But they saying that their main goal is to just have games run better by default(aka games that have variable res or unlocked FPS) without mandating patches to take advantage of it

...there IS a boost mode, that's the whole point, is to have boost mode on all the time. And devs still need to offer patches for additional Scorpio support.

All dev kits for any system are typically more powerful and have way more power than retail kits. You need that for debugging and such.

I'm starting to see the ingenious way MS is making every normal decision some kind of Scorpio epiphany, haha

No, there's no mode, it's just default behaviour, AKA a better implementation.

Xbox Orion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd be totally fine with MS naming all their systems after constellations, galaxies and such. Get away from numbers and random letters

You may have misinterpreted what i'm saying. I am saying that there is no boost mode option or pro patches, the hardware by default runs the games as if boost mode was always enabled and they seem to not be mandating patches or updating for the scorpio based on what Phil has said, just having old and new games run better based on the hardware itself doing the brute force.

I think that's a better approach than "some games get patched, others don't, we'll introduce boost mode months down the line, some games may be affected, others wont" ect.
