I'm gonna dive into Minecraft for the first time with the Switch version. I was tempted to get the Wii U version when that came out but I never got round to it.
Any word on price?
Physical release?
Later this year. All of the console versions had the physical version release later.Physical release?
Later in the year.
Ok, thanks. Never played Minecraft but a good portable version could make me try. Rather have physical version just in case it's not my cup of tea and I wanna sell.Later this year. All of the console versions had the physical version release later.
Never played minecraft.
Might get this on sale at some point.
That in dollars?
£25 would be a comfortable price point for me.
Unless there's some ugly detail hidden out there, I will probably grab this one near release day. It will be my second copy of Minecraft besides the PC version. How does the multiplayer stuff work on consoles? Can I play online / local LAN with other friends who also own the game on Switch around me?
Prepare for the articles writing that the Switch renders only 1/12 of the blocks compared to the PS4/XB1 version!New details from today's stream:
Docking the game improves render distance. I'm assuming this means it doesn't boost resolution. They said "off the top of their head" it renders 7 chunks undocked, and 12 docked.
So for comparison:
On PS4 and Xbox One, the render distance is 18 chunks
On Switch Docked, the render distance is 12 chunks
On PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U, the render distance is 10 chunks
On Switch Undocked, the render distance is 7
On PS Vita, the render distance is 5 chunks

Leaving aside the fact that Vita is 20fps and 540p sure.Undocked Switch confirmed closer to Vita than Wii U.

Close to WiiU than XB1/PS4. Yikes.
20fps is an exaggeration i played the Vita version with latest patches it runs at 30fps alot and when there's lots of blocks it drops abit but not to 20fps low, at launch it was worse then improved after some updates also Vita is several years old hardware of course it's gonna be worse, 540p to 720p undocked not massive eitherLeaving aside the fact that Vita is 20fps and 540p sure.
That is only the render though.
The worlds built on Switch can be quite bigger than on Wii U tho.
What's the comparison for world size on PS4/XB1/PS3/WiiU/360 and Switch?
Switch (medium on PS4) is about 3072 x 3072.
Vita / Xbox 360 / PS3 / Wii U are 864 x 864.
PS4 / Xbox One are 5120 x 5120 (large).
What's the comparison for world size on PS4/XB1/PS3/WiiU/360 and Switch?
As you can see, smaller than PS4/XB1, but massively larger than the previous gen versions.world size comparison

Isn't it in the OP:

Render would primarily come down to number of polygons correct? Seems strang that Undocked wouldn't be able to outdo last-gen versions.

Runs at 60 fps as well. But yeah, it's close to the Vita version... :lol
how is 3.5 times bigger, "close to the vita version"???

I should have ended the post with "/s"

random question, do any of the console releases of Minecraft support any sort of modding?

Looks aight if you don't have a console, pc or phone.
It's bigger, but if it's not being displayed it's irrelevant from a graphics processing standpoint. The world size on Switch is vastly bigger so I'm not sure you can do a 1:1 comparison with just the render distance and not taking everything else into account.
I popped into my PC world and took some screens comparing 5, 7, 10, 12, and 16 chunk render distance. At least in the old version I was using 16 is where it maxed out, though I'm sure when playing VR modded version I've at least had it in the 20s before.
