51 House Republicans push for religious liberty executive order

Dozens of Republican lawmakers are asking President Trump to scale back Obama-era protections for gays and lesbians in order to make good on a campaign promise to protect religious liberty.

A group of 51 members of the House wrote to Trump this month to "request that you sign the draft executive order on religious liberty, as reported by numerous outlets on February 2, 2017, in order to protect millions of Americans whose religious freedom has been attacked or threatened over the last eight years." The letter has not been publicly released but was obtained by USA TODAY.

In February, the White House said Trump had no plans to sign such an order: "The executive order signed in 2014, which protects employees from anti-LGBTQ workplace discrimination while working for federal contractors, will remain intact at the direction of President Donald J. Trump.”
But on Monday, a senior White House official told USA TODAY that some sort of policy to protect religious liberty is still in the works, but that the president is trying to find middle ground. The official did not want to publicly discuss a policy that is still under development.

The official said that Trump has been clear about his support for the LGBTQ community — including following the shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando and again during the Republican National Convention — and that he does not support any kind of discrimination. But Trump also believes there should be policies that allow for people to express and maintain their strongly held religious beliefs, the official said.

Religious Liberty means being free to practice what you want. Not imposing your outdated religious views on others, regardless of their belief system. Jesus Fucking Christ.

Much like free speech, laws intended to protect the vulnerable are twisted to protect oppressors.

I believe Jesus said famously,

"These goddamn queers need to get the fuck away from me before I pull out the AR-15, you godless sons of bitches"
- Cuckviticus 69:420

Can the GOP stop pretending they care about religious freedom already? They care about "religious liberty" only when it allows them to discriminate against others of different beliefs.

This isn't freedom. It's oppression. You don't protect religious freedom by infringing the religious freedom of others. That's explicitly against the Constitution.

They do know there are more Amendments than the 2nd, right?

No right to force your religious beliefs on others. If they don't want to serve all of the general public and treat everyone as equals, then maybe they shouldn't have opened a business or provide services.

This probably has Pence as giddy as a schoolgirl.

You really think there's no racial minorities are supporting this stuff? In this case, race has pretty much has nothing to do with who supports this kind of governance.

I'm religious and always have been. But I'm always flabbergasted when acts like this are done. This country is made of many different religions and imposing views. Suppose to love, not discriminate. Suppose to include, not exclude. Religion is suppose to guide you, especially so when you're uncomfortable with certain customs or ideals because ultimately, you're suppose to treat everyone equally.

They're Pharisees to the letter.

It's easy when you understand that Christianity in America has almost wholesale being taken over by the radicals. Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, Rod Parsley, and the rest of those fascists are the face and driving force of Christianity in this country, and they are determined to do whatever they can to take over.

Twinks4Trump and Gays4Trump would probably be outraged at this right now if not for the fact that a lot of them are well-off white men who probably hold alt-right views.

They talk about religious liberty, and they speak about their plans to ban Muslims solely on their religion. They are not even pretending anymore about their bigotry.

Much like free speech, laws intended to protect the vulnerable are twisted to protect oppressors.
Nope. Religious Freedom was never intended to protect the vulnerable. The First Amendment already provides for the freedom of religion.

This is just another example of coded language intended to further oppress minorities, POC and the LGBQT community. And we've known that. This shouldn't be a surprise to anyone on this board.

I still think this new quest of RELIGIOUS LIBERTY will bight them in the ass one day, especially with some more extreme versions of Islam.

Sounds like somebody has not read the Bible recently.

"And lo, if thou, while performing a contract for the federal government, shall find one of your servants lying with a man, or performing other activities that are abominations in the sight of your Lord, verily shalt though terminate his employment, and more, thou shalt do all in thine power to deny him unemployment benefits."

- Deuteronomy 7:23.

So religious liberty as long as you define religion as outdated, conservative Christian only.

Fuck off with that. This has nothing to do with religion, it is about legalizing discrimination.

These people are not Christian's, Jesus would of railed against them like he did the Pharisees. If groups like Isis and Taliban are not true Muslims then you have to approach ridiculous Christians the same way instead of grouping us all together. I suppose ill be asked to apologize for these appostees actions like Muslims are asked to apologize for their extremists.

I rail against this shit republican type Christianity in my day to day life all the time so don't acuse me of doing nothing to stop these idiots. I do what I can do and when I see shit that goes against Jesus's teachings I point it out. If any party should be the party of Christians it should be the democratic party as its values are far more in line with Christian teachings than anything republicans stand for.

I however prefer that religion has no party. Politics is what is corrupting religion just like it corrupts everything else. Religion is a personal choice and should not be forced on people just like anti abortion laws should not be forced on women. There is not one path to whatever is after death and I don't think you have to be a Christian to get there. Religion is a construct created by people so we don't know which religion is right or if any are. You don't have to believe in a religion to believe there may be something beyond explanation out there.

How... do these "conservatives" not realize how easy this is to game?

Like, go ahead and pass something about Religious Freedom meaning the opposite, and then watch a million colander-headed goofballs take it and twist it immediately.

In 2017.

I hope that what this nation is going through now is the death throes of the hard-line conservative GOP, and not the republic.

So frustrating how the right has warped religious liberty to mean "liberty to discriminate based on religion" which is the exact fucking opposite of the intentions of those who wrote the 1st amendment. Then they have the gall to claim to they're protecting the constitution. Mother fuckers!

People are free to practice their religious beliefs as long as they don't infringe on the rights of others. Seems like the far right keeps trying to maneuver past that restriction.

If it happens, I would hope it would get struck down immediately by a federal judge the same way his other bogus executive orders have.

You don't need to apologise for anything. These motherfuckers are digging their own grave. As long as true Christians like you and a few other members on this board speak up and decry their actions then we can galvanize a position of animosity towards those who wish to use their religion as an excuse for discrimination and oppression.

Actually, it means you can believe what you want. Practice is separate and distinct, and is the problem here.

I can believe that dropping LSD allows me to talk to God. Practicing that is another matter entirely.
