Its a shame their net profit was slashed by half because of the pictures division. There seems to be always a division that fucks up the entire profit.

Picture division made money actually afaik, as there is an impacted $900m charge that's an accounting "trick" that was done in Q3.

Not understanding you sorry lol. So not really money but just in the books or something"? lol
Look page 14 in pdf.
They call it an "impairment charge of goodwill". Closer to $1b.

http://deadline.com/2017/01/sony-pictures-962-million-charge-film-division-write-down-1201897260/

The impairment charge is described as a “non-cash loss” that relates to a number of factors, including the purchase of the studio almost 30 years ago, and “dramatic shifts in the home entertainment space currently being felt throughout the entire industry.” A majority of the goodwill that was impaired, Sony said, was originally recorded at the time of the acquisition of Columbia Pictures Entertainment in 1989.

So the PS4 is at 60 mil now and I don't see the momentum letting up unless the Switch and Scorpio significantly steal the wind out of its sales somehow. Incoming, there's still software like Spider-Man, God of War, VII-Remake, Days Gone, The Last of Us Part II and a shitload of marketing bundles with big third-party games, all of which should have a significant impact commercially.

I'm confident this thing will go beyond 100 million. Question is when it will happen.

They'll hit 100m in FY19 assuming:

FY17: 18m
FY18: 15m
FY19: 10m

That'll round off at 105m, so beating the PS1 & Wii and if it still sells well over 20/21 it might even beat the GB/GBC (118m) to second overall behind the PS2.

The transition to PS5 will be more crucial than 2-3. The huge digital component of many users' libraries must surely lead to BC, and that will be the key thing they absolutely cannot drop the ball over. This is the last 'lock-in' generation and if they mess up BC I can see people leaving their ecosystem in droves.

This is said every generation yet the reality is people don't really care about BC. The evidence for this is clear.

For the PS5 they just need to ensure it's powerful, affordable, and easy to develop for with world clasd dev tools (all things they've succeeded in this gen). They also need to continue to foster good relations with developers.

Remember when ps4 was frontloaded and it would suffer to reach 60M LTD? Those were the times

I still remember the "WiiU is struggling, therefore PS4 and XB1 will also struggle!". Good times.

Though a good reminder that we should never jump the gun with these things, regardless of the current moment. The future may be better or worse, it's never really set in stone.

For example, we don't really know how the Switch and Scorpio will shake up the market. Sony may very well end up back on the bottom, or things can possibly continue to go their way (just like these past 3-4 years).

Estimates put Steam revenue at 3.5 billion
PSN had revenue of 6.48 billion last fiscal year so yes PSN is far bigger than Steam in terms of revenue.

Just keep in mind, that the 3.5bn figure for steam sales is just games and does not include MTX revenue from DOTA or CS:GO

Unless you give a quote i don't believe someone said that.
But on the other hand people also said xbox one will fail to even sell 40 million LTD

Also as a sidenote Gaming division was just 2 million yens shy of all time record for profit. Division did 137 billion yen back in FY1998 and now 135 billion. Thanks to different currency exchange rate in dollar gaming division actually made record (1.21 billion vs 1.138 billion)

This honestly surprises me. One would think that the highest record would be during the PS2 era.

Just this holiday season Sony has marketing, etc for
COD:WW2
Battlefront 2
Destiny 2

Absolutely crazy,
What other AAA's are around that window?

They also have Red Dead Redemption 2, but there's of course a big question mark about it releasing. Then you have GT Sport. Not third party but obviously a big deal for them.

Red Dead Redemption 2, which is also with Sony.
Assassin's Creed Empire
New Need for Speed
A Bethesda game

Drawing a blank on anything more.

Read Dead 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 possibly, which they're also marketing.

Sony has Red Dead Redemption 2 too

and beaten lol

Thanks,

And not really an AAA to everyone but Ace Combat 7 as well
its should be a great year for Sony.

This thing is hitting PS1 numbers at a minimum. The only reason the PS3 didn't continue to sell after the PS4 launch was because of how long people had waited for a new generation of consoles, plus the PS3 never crashed in price like the PS1 and PS2 after their successors launched. PS4 will definitely continue to sell post PS5 launch for sure.

Best wishes.

I think BC it's a given at this point. A given and a must.

most important information not even postend in the OP
i'm disappointed

C-fv1brWsAAhto1.jpg:large

Hardware sales down 4.5% YoY while Hardware units up 23% YoY
Network sales up 31.5% YoY
Other sales up 31% YoY

Network sales as big as the previous Holiday quarter.
growth is still huge

I'd say nothing is quite a given. I hope for BC, but if it turned out to compromise the next design in some significant way - specifically in terms of PS5 game performance at a given price point - Sony might sacrifice it. I think that's less likely to be necessary than it was in the PS3->PS4 transition, but I wouldn't rule it out entirely yet,

To think that there was a time where people believed that 100m was impossible for this gen is quite funny. PS4 will come closer to the mighty PS2 LTD numbers than many thought.

Another reason why I think we won't hear/see anything about PS5 before 2020 no matter how many Scorpios or Switches gets thrown at them. This thing will still sell like hotcakes for another 3 years easily.

If PS5 launches with no BC of any kind physical or digital, then Sony's no better than Nintendo.

Absolutely agreed.

If xbox 2 has full bc and ps5 doesn't, they are in deep shit.

XB2 will have 360, XB1, and XB2 games. That is really tempting.
