See, thematically speaking, the original trilogy isn't much of a trilogy. 3 just doesn't stand as a finale to it. I'd really put it as the MIDDLE of a trilogy, starting with Spider-Man 2 and going to the hypothetical fourth movie.
Spider-Man 3 is like a shitty Empire Strikes Back, ending with the hero broken, his relationships ruined, his friends dead, the world against him.
Like, imagine if instead of Return of the Jedi, they just... stopped. So unsatisfying!

I don't think SM3 is any kind of treasure, but even from day one it has always confused and bothered me that Emo Peter was the name that was chosen for his Venom Side because he doesn't act like an emo kid at all. He becomes a cocky asshole. People are like "Oh but he's wearing black" no shit, it's the Venom suit. It's black.

And that is why Marvel Studios's Homecoming is going to be the best spiderman. Neither Spidermen have ever got him right. Civil War's spiderman was true to the character more so than both Tobel and Andrew with their 5 movies combined.

I liked Spider-Man 3. Unironically.
It didn't hold a candle to Spider-Man 1 and 2, but despite its absurd shit with miscast and executed venom, the rest of the movie was fun. I thought the Sandman stuff and overall theme of forgiveness was fine, but then this space goop storyline and Topher Grace stinking the place up killed it for me.
Dancing Peter never ceases to crack me up. I liked that it took the dark brooding hero trope and just amped up Tobey and Parker's innate doofiness. I'm actually interested in this.

2 has aged very well. I watched it for the first time pretty recently, and it's a proper rendering of the character with a lot of heart. It's also not ashamed to be a comic book movie, while the MCU still seems set on making fun of the idea that it's based on comics.
The effects, well, maybe they haven't aged as well, but that's to be expected.

I haven't watched Spider-Man 3 since the midnight showing in theaters. I borrowed it from a friend to give it another chance, but still haven't. I just can't bring myself to do it. I didn't outright hate the film like I have some other comic films, but my indifference to it just makes it harder to give another chance.
Same goes for Dark Knight Rises, but I at least bought that on blu in the mindset of giving it another chance.
Someday soon. Maybe I will have a day of punishment and watch those two back to back.
