these any good?

Photos look good. I'll take higher-res if you've got 'em, but otherwise this should be fine. Thanks!

HasCon passes just went up and holy shit that's expensive

The regular admission is on the high end but not totally insane -- PAX is in the neighborhood of that $165 price, for example. The "Super Fan" package is obviously, trivially overpriced, but it's for people who will pay for low marginal value because they've got cash to throw around. (And depending on the exact details of the cards and their print runs it's possible the promos could pay for a good chunk of it.)

EDIT: Saw everyone on twitter making fun of the super package and missed that the drafts are sixty bucks. That's ridiculous. I figured a sealed pre-release event with five packs would be justifiable at $60, not a three-pack draft.

EDIT 2: Yeah, it's $60 for a six pack sealed event. That's not unreasonable. Are the drafts really the same price, I don't see them on the page. The Anniversary Drafts with assorted old packs are $15 which again seems pretty fair.

mashup cards confirmed silver-bordered, not reprints

You sure about this? Trick is referring to it as a draft on twitter.

edit: nvm, page just updated, confirmed it's a sealed event. That's better, but I'm still not seeing how this is more than double the price of GenCon.

The cosplay policy is bizarre.

Your eyes have to be visible at all times. Looking forward to seeing a Transformer with a paper plate mask on.

PAX East was $25 or $30 a day in its first year, and stayed in the $100 range for three-day passes until 2017. It's also more than quadruple the floorspace, has more panels and activities, and people still complain that it's more expensive than other cons.

A first year convention being more expensive than PAX is pretty insane. I'm not surprised twitter is pissed, although complaining about the $650 package is definitely missing the mark.

Assuming they are going to be semi-reasonable with the cards, despite being silver-bordered.

Princess Twilight Sparkle - 2URW
Legendary Creature - Pegasus Unicorn
Flying
When Princess Twilight Sparkle enters the battlefield, you may discard any number of cards. If you do, draw that many cards.
Whenever you draw one or more cards, Twilight deals that much damage to up to one target creature.
URW: Exile Twilight, then return it to the battlefield under its owner's control.
2/2

Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader - 3WWW
Legendary Artifact Creature - Construct
First strike, prowess, vigilance
Other Constructs you control get +1/+1 and indestructible.
R: Transform Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader.
6/6
==
Optimus Prime, Super Truck
Legendary Artifact Creature - Vehicle Construct
Haste, first strike
Other Vehicles you control get +1/+1 and indestructible.
W: Transform Optimus Prime, Super Truck
8/4

Rich Uncle Moneybags - XBB
Legendary Creature - Human Advisor
When Rich Uncle Moneybags enters the battlefield, create X colorless artifact tokens named Gold. They have "Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool."
Whenever you sacrifice a Gold token, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life. Then, if you don't control any Gold tokens, return Moneybags to your hand.

Just to check, Silver-Borders aren't legal in Commander? Because I would play the shit out of the Optimus one, and I'm not even that big of a Transformers fan.

Anybody else going to the Open in Baltimore this weekend? I'm not smart enough to read the recent results and metagame accordingly so I'm just going to take Affinity and see what happens lol.
I'm planning on going and was thinking of doing the same, taking Affinity.

The Monopoly card should be:

Free Parking
Land

It has no rules text, but every turn it's in play you have to exile the first card you draw and put it under Free Parking. And if Free Parking leaves play during your turn then you put all the exiled cards into your hand.

Hilariously, they would never ever make this, since the Free Parking thing isn't officially part of the Monopoly ruleset.

Maybe it's on a silver-bordered Monopoly rules card.

One of the reasons Monopoly sucks is that it lasts too long. The Free Parking house rule just injects more money into the game and makes it last longer. It's perhaps the worst widely accepted game rule ever.

Also I fucking abhor Monopoly.

I mean, the biggest issue w/ Monopoly is that no one actually plays with the Auction rule.

Team Draft Super League is coming up. LSV, Efro and Ben Stark vs Sperling, Rietzel and David Williams.

Mind games have already begun

My LGS runs Commander events and I want to buy into Baral because I'm a sadist who hates fun. I've seen a few decks in the store - a reasonably tuned Breya list, non-degenerate Zur, and a tweaked Meren precon.

Here's a draft of a list. I'm trying to keep it under 100 bucks while also grabbing a grip of Rebecca Guay's C16 islands. The maybeboard consists of counters I'm not sure about, fun targets for Polymorph/Reweave/Synthetic Destiny if I want to be slightly less fun police, and some miscellaneous cuts I made as I was making the list. Anything obvious I'm missing that's not obscenely expensive?

Logan Nettles (Reid Duke's cousin/Jaberwocki of consistent standard excellence on mtgo fame) claims that UR control is incredibly advantaged vs Marvel; he went 6-1 in the MOCS against it. I've been running pretty much near the same list as him and, while I can maybe see that claim for game 1, (hence my enthusiasm about the UR rising the other day) I haven't had near that success post board. I also generally have issues with drawing the wrong type of answers at the wrong time. Does anyone with a lot of experience and success with the deck have any pointers for boarding/play in the post sideboard games vs Marvel?

Could be down to practice. Control matches are where reps with the deck shine.

I would agree with you on my own experience playing URx control ever since Eldritch Moon. Game 2 and 3 are all about sideboard and see if they bring in the go-wide plan because until Sweltering Suns was printed there were no answers for a resolved Whirler Virtuoso. You could be boarding in for the creature package and then they just drop Flamecallers and you're boned. You keep yours Suns in games 2/3 and if you see they aren't going wide just cycle them. Trade in censors for harder Negate/Dispel counters because they usually bring in Negate themselves and try to wait you out T7/8 to drop a Marvel.

The biggest problem with monopoly is that it's a bad game from the thirties.

Any random board game your LGS sells is better in every real way other than having more rules. I can't really envision someone saying they'd rather play Monopoly than, say, Fury of Dracula.

Would you guys bring in Things in the Ice as well against Marvel? Can also deal with thopter hordes and turn into threats on their own. The blocking power is less relevant early on, but they do stop 3/2s.

Well, I thought I remembered having a hard time with the deck. Just started playing it again for the first time in two weeks after playing Marvel in the competitive standard league. Went 5-0 against 3 mirrors, Temur, and UW flash without dropping a single game. Guess I might try this monday at the ptq after all. Definitely need more reps though.

thing in the ice does well against marvel, since they have to use a harnessed lightning + energy or 4 damage chandra ultimate to kill it

Holy Fuck I had a night for MTGO to remember ....... 16 land decks and in 3 games in a row i drew 10 + lands (no i wasn't drawing cards) and then in the zombie mirror in a seperate draft, the first game I get all plains, Second game the opponent keeps with no creatures, and 3rd game I draw 11 lands out of 16 in the top 20. Until this draft I was literally 2 - 1 or better in the last 5 drafts I've done. The only time i've lost tonight at all was because of severe flood or mana screw, its frustrating as hell to just lose to a bad g/u deck because you can't hit your 3rd land drop in the top 15 cards of your deck, or to lose because the game decides that your 16 land deck will draw 10 - 11 lands in back to back games.

It wouldn't be so bad if I was losing because the opponents decks were just better, but all night mtgo has been killing me with lands, yeah yeah a game of variance, but god does it fucking suck when you know theres a computer doing the math behind it

Can I rant about something 100% trivial that's been pissing me off?

I've been looking into making either a RG Energy Aggro or Jund Energy Aggro deck, and that means looking at Longtusk Cub a whole lot.

Image.ashx

What the flying fuck is happening with the adult Longtsusk's tusks?! Why are they so comically long? How are tusks that long helpful at all? They're so long and curved that they look like they'd make it impossible for it to even eat anything, and they curve back so far that there's no realistic way for the points to threaten anything. This thing should be either dead or on the verge of dying because it can't eat anything. It's ridiculous.

A big Sabertooth Cat with curvy markings on its hide would've been a million times better, but they instead when with this monstrosity.

I rather get rid of all the smaller creatures with Sweltering Sun than bounce them back, only for them to replay it and get even more energy.

I'm play testing 2 Cryptic Serpent and in the build that runs 4 Hieroglyphics Illumination, I found myself being able to quickly drop it with back up counters. It may be too cute but I'll give it a run for a while.

COMMANDER 1V1 BANNED UPDATE

Announcement: May 24, 2017

Effective Date: May 24, 2017

Next Announcement: June 14, 2017

The following cards are added to the Commander 1v1 Banned List:

Dig Through Time
Strip Mine
Treasure Cruise

Here is an explanation from Magic R&D's Bryan Hawley:

Strip Mine

In conjunction with Life from the Loam and Crucible of Worlds, Strip Mine recursion locks have proven to be an extremely powerful and resilient lock taking minimal investment from the decks playing them.

Dig Through Time

Treasure Cruise

Initial results have shown that blue midrange decks, either mono-blue or Sultai-colored, are rising to the top at a steady rate. Given the variety of Commanders being played in decks with similar strategies, this appears to be a color and strategic imbalance in the format more so than individual problem Commanders. While removing these cards is far from a crippling blow to these decks, it's a clear first step in lowering their power level.

Wouldn't mind a Strip Mine ban in normal EDH too.

It's not too bad in multiplayer. I throw that and wasteland in everything for the cradles, coffers etc that run rampant in most decks.

If they don't show up then they just function as colorless lands which is fine as well for the most part.
