lol no.

Of course, having the best characters of all fime helps it a great deal, and probably a ton of its sales is because of that. But to say its "nothing" without Nintendo character's is absurd. The gameplay is top notch, and theres pretty much no competition in what I call the "Smash Genre". Theres like, one pixel based game in the genre on pc that seems kinda good (note: I've never played it. Just remember it.) but theres hardly any more, and what there is mostly have bad gameplay.

I can certainly say if someone made an indie crossover game with much less popular characters like Shovel Knight, Quote, and even if it was very niche characters like Madotsuki or all original characters, that if the gameplay was top notch, and played pretty much exactly like Smash (with different movesets of course) it would sell atleast a million copies WW even if it was all original characters as long as the gameplay is good. There is a great want of more Smash games but noone is really filling it.

There's been plenty of anime cross over fighters with smash gameplay , one even sold 460k on the DS in Japan (this was the shounen jump one)..

It's not that easy to do it right and it needs to be packed with content no matter what the roster looks like. Not many companies can afford that kind of investment and the failures of those who have attempted before are enough to frighten them off. Also Kamiya will say mean things about your clone on twitter.
I think starting like Smash 64 with a 12 character roster would be fine for a first iteration. It doesn't have to be completely packed with content as long as its not a full priced title. Of course it should have some crazy stages and items, 3P & 4P modes, and if its a crossover it should have trophies or a equivalent.

It just seems like noone wants to develop a game like Smash which is a real shame. Personally when it comes to an Indie crossover, with their experience in fighting games, them being indie, and already having a crossover with other indies, I feel the Skullgirls developer would've been the best bet to make one popular but they moved on to Indivisible so it was not meant to be. Oh well...

That sounds like a larger restock than the last few weeks.

I don't know. Depending on the size of the store, they receive more or less stock. Bic Camera in Yurakucho is a large shop so probably they got a big amount.
It's difficult to tell without knowing how many units they had for last weekend lottery.

You're describing a game that would be lucky to sell six digits.

I can't be bothered making a new thread for this seeing as most mobile game threads don't get much attention.

http://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Trends/Vietnam-s-mobile-game-market-attracts-Japanese-players

Basically, Japanese mobile game companies are lured by the possibility that revenue projections for mobile games in Vietnam will EXPLODE over several years leading to a market that's worth 20 Trillion Dong ($880 million)

Japanese company KDDI is one of the first companies to want to capitalise on this:

In December, KDDI teamed up with MobiFone Telecom, Vietnam's second-largest wireless service provider with 34.6 million customers. The Japanese telecom giant plans to sell mobile games through a system similar to its au Smart Pass service in Japan, which allows people to buy games, movies and music using a special app.

Initially, KDDI will focus on selling Vietnamese entertainment, but may offer Japanese content after monitoring user trends.

Fuji Technology is also making efforts to expand into Vietnam with localisation efforts:

Fuji Technology, a Hanoi-based Japanese IT company, kicked off its game download service late last year with "Ren Q Bu!," a wildly popular Japanese dating simulation game. On June 27, the company plans to release a Vietnamese version of the Japanese role-playing game, "Re:Monster."

Game downloads from Fuji Technology are free, but certain items will carry a price tag. The company is targeting more than 500,000 game downloads.

To reduce development costs, Fuji Technology is localizing Japanese games for the Vietnamese market. As the number of Vietnamese entering Japan grows, the company is betting that interest in Japanese games will also grow.

There are over 150 mobile games in Vietnam:

The popularity of mobile games began to skyrocket in Vietnam around 2016. According to one estimate, there are now more than 150 mobile games available. Some have turned out to be a massive hits, including "Vo Lam Truyen Ky," a role-playing game in which historical heroes fight each other, and "MU Origin," a game that pits users against monsters. The two have been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times.

Factors affecting the growth in mobile game revenue is the availability of 4G Wireless Internet:

Vietnam's poor wireless communications will see dramatic improvements this year as fourth-generation mobile technology is introduced to large swaths of the country, giving the mobile game market a boost.

So they are going to use Vietnam as the basis to expand their mobile market?

I remember Sega's Hortensia Saga being released exclusively on SEA region and it flopped and close down less than a year lol.

Japan mobile games are insanely popular in my country though, didn't surprise after seeing that tbh

lol sure.

Until someone actually tries to create a worthy Smash game we will never know for sure but I feel like it'd be fairly big deal.

well there was playstation all stars and that konami smash game (and to a much lesser extend dissidia)... also jump ultimate stars and jump super stars which were both incredible games

Jesus that piece of shit "Vo lam truyen ki" still alive and making money, how ?

Also, if you want a your game to success in VietNam, put a sexy anime girl in front of the cover, you will make millions (dong).

You literally said "the roster is the whole appeal", which is why I quoted you. Denying the influence of the roster would be silly.

The person I was replying to was literally denying the influence of the roster. Hence my hyperbole of "The roster is the whole appeal."

I don't believe Smash would be as successful without its characters. It's a fantastic game all around, but the core concept revolves around Nintendo characters beating each other up. And that's why it's been insanely popular since the start (and it's only gotten better in terms of gameplay).

I didn't deny the influence of the roster. I did ask for evidence for the extend to which the roster pushes sale. There are fighting games with great roster (MvC) in the west and they don't sell as well as Smash. There are Smash-like games in Japan that feature popular anime/manga characters and they also don't sell as well as Smash. I just want to give good game design credit when credit is due. Smash came out as the huge critical and commercial hit. Do you think all those MC scores are only for the roster?

I already said the gameplay is fantastic and another reason why it's so popular.

And I also already said that other crossover games (whether high qualify or not) haven't sold as well because their rosters don't have the same appeal. In regards to MvC, it's successful but I believe there are a couple reasons why it isn't as big as Smash. It likely doesn't appeal to casual players as much as Smash does (yes, Smash also appeals to competitive players, the fact that it does both greatly contributes to its success). And secondly, its roster doesn't have quite the renown that Smash's does in the video game realm. Obviously Marvel characters are huge, but in video games they've never been on the level of characters like Mario. Capcom's side is definitely more catered to the video game audience, but again, characters like Mega Man or Chris Redfield aren't on the level of Pikachu or Link. It's just targeting a more niche audience than Smash does. And the same goes for the anime/manga fighters.

Edit: Also, it can be said that fans of Capcom may not be fans of Marvel, and vice versa. Whereas Smash crosses over a huge amount of franchises, so even if someone doesn't like Pikmin or Metroid, for example, that won't hinder their experience of the game because that only amounts to a few characters in a huge pool.

I've got bad news for you. Disgaea 5 I am Setsuna and Dragon Quest Heroes I & II late ports for Switch didn't seem to bring a lot of new people either. :(((
From what I've seen they did ok if not good. Even better if you don't count only Japan.

What numbers are you comparing it to then?
I'm talking quality with my last sentence (former glory) not numbers.
I know Falcom never had the biggest hits, but I'm sad to see the worst games doing the best sales.

I could see ARMS tanking in Japan. In the West you still have things like Mortal Kombat and For Honor doing very well, suggesting underperformances are driven by products instead of genre disinterest.

We don't have as strong an argument for that in Japan with Smash and one of the Persona fighters being the only bigger performers (barring me forgetting something), and the latter wasn't doing the domestic equivalent of a 5+ million copy game overseas.

Cross-post.

Update:

The Japanese ARMS commercial has 487k views.

The US ARMS commercial has 178k views.

The US ARMS commercial is 3 days older but the Japanese commercial is overwhelmingly popular.
It's also plausible that the type of people who might want to buy ARMS aren't the preorder audience (that usually suggests younger or less hardcore gamers) or that they just don't shop at COMG.

I guess they could also be buying digitally, since it's a smaller game file size wise, but I'd be surprised if that exceeds 20%.

Or the audience for the game could just be unable to purchase a Switch. :p

That said, I'm expecting the game to succeed as a multimillion unit title worldwide, at least eventually, regardless of how it does in Japan.

The views of the YouTube video are most likely proportioned by overseas viewers.

The game could have lower preorder numbers due to difficulties in acquiring a Switch in the first place.

I guess we'll find out by launch. I also predict that it could be a multimillion seller by the end of Nintendo's financial year.

I feel like pedigree and a tad of curiosity/gimmick-novelty alone will prop up ARMS. Unlike most traditional fighters, there's a very easy splashdown point for younger audiences or parents or just more casual players to go in and "flail" or the less competitive modes like basketball and volleyball, there's enough meat to the bone for more than just the usual fighter demographics (even though the game itself does come off as a thin around the core with its more straightforward single-player offerings).

Here I am speaking strictly for Japan, in the west this will still be a factor but as you say fighters in general are trending on healthier numbers.

I don't think its going to go gangbusters out of the door if even ever, but the team pedigree will beget a pretty healthy marketing budget which should keep it from "bomb" territory just on sheer exposure-v-probability of sales conversion.

I suspect, westwardly speaking, that ARMS will see some knocks on it from the thinner single-player offering, especially when compared to peers like Injustice 2 or MKXL. Certainly, it will probably look good compared to SFV but then a polished slab of metal would also look good compared to SFV.

For what it's worth, there's a lot of Japanese players playing the testpunch. I had to try several times to find a lobby without more than half of the players being Japanese his morning. So they're not necessary more or less interested in the game than western audiences.

While true what is the chance someone will have seen the Japanese trailer but not the u.s. one if they're an overseas viewer. If you were to remove the entire US trailers total form the Japanese ons you still have a large number of viewers left.
