Pokemon Ultra Moon and Ultra Sun for Nintendo 3DS

This feels good, because I have been on the "Switch isn't replacing their handhelds" train since the beginning while getting shit on here on GAF for it.

Now it looks more and more like the whole third pillar fake out. 3DS is still selling hardware and software and has a huge userbase, its going to keep getting games until they decide to replace it.

Except it is replacing their handhelds. That's the whole purpose of the Switch, they wanted to stop having resources split between two platforms.

Wow really lots of bad news for the Switch recently huh .. is it a sign of something?

  • Port of a Wii U Pokemon game that no one s keen on
  • 3DS game instead of a Switch one (what is Nintendo thinking)
  • No complete version of Fifa 18
  • Nintendo still focused on 3DS instead of Switch (Direct had little to explore on the Switch)

exactly, This is not surprising and anyone that is saying that this is a surprise was hyping themselves up for no reason.

I can see a version coming out for switch but it will probably be a year or more.
Yep. 3DS with the new revision was begging for more Pokemon. Switch Pokemon will come but it'll be a bit longer so all this hyperbole in here is ridiculous. It always seemed too early for the Switch without the massive userbase a Pokemon game requires. Maybe a year later as you say. But the line-up for the Switch this year is solid enough without a Pokemon game.

The hell are you going on about? The thing is still selling out and we haven't even seen their E3 announcements.

Also this is all TPC and GameFreak, Nintendo doesn't get much say in how they operate

Don't over-exaggerate. A Pokemon mainline will eventually hit Switch. Just not now.

Switch still has alotta positive word of mouth and is a destructive force in Japan. Lol

No? If you squint really hard and want it to be bad news it can be but that's because you want it to be.

How is "A new game was announced for the system that not many people had a chance to play" bad news?

I mean, I get it if it's not EXCITING. But bad?

It's almost like Nintendo is going to be in LA in a few days.

Keep bringing out those 3DS games, Nintendo! Much appreciated.

I'm sure by the time I get a Switch in a couple of years they'll be making games for that.

Really a lot of bad news for switch? The Switch news up until Pokemon seems to have been pretty great.

Yeah, okay. And third pillar etc.

This is embarrassing. Some of you seem to have slept through the last decade of so. Pokemon B2/W2 released 16 months after the 3DS launched

To be fair, this is more on Game Freak & The Pokémon Company than Nintendo themselves.

Well, it's cool that they are bringing back concepts like fusions.

Makes me Hopeful megas and Z-Moves won't be forgotten

Lunala looks cool, Solgaleo is a fucking Shield Liger

I mean whatever. Don't argue with me. Its reality that they are clearly still putting titles on both.

Might be skipping these depending on the amount of content added. It'll be really hard to go back to the 3DS after using the Switch.

The only thing I found out with this announcement is the existence of the "NINTENDO SWITCH MASTER RACE" people. I'm surprised.

Selling out doesn't mean anything to people who own the system that are looking for content to play. The E3 comment is true though, which makes this direct pretty unnecessary. Could they not have waited a week to give out this information?

I have not read every page, but from a business perspective, this makes perfect sense for GameFreak and Nintendo:

For Poke revenues, think about:
  • intall base -- 66m 3DSes in the wild, versus, what, 4m switches?
  • discretionary spending in the target Poke audience -- even if the average Pokemon fanatic can find a switch, could they afford to buy one?

For the Switch side -- they already have more demand than they can handle, and they still have big/decent size games like Splatoon 2, Arms, and Mario Odyssey (and now Pokken Tournament) set to release this year. They don't need another marquee title to move systems this year. Better to launch a Switch pokemon in Q1 or A2 2018.

It's kind of surprising to me that Nintendo put less focus on the Direct on this than they did Pokkén. Even they wouldn't be so stupid as to think that Pokkén would be a bigger deal than a new entry in their flagship franchise. Hell, isn't the Spotlight supposed to be entirely around Switch? Wouldn't Pokkén have been a better announce at that event?

The skeptic in me wants to assume that with the weird information scarcity and the press release not even mentioning the platforms of this game that they might pull it out at E3 and be like "surprise Switch version" but I'm not holding my breath on that one too much.

It was reasonable to expect it but we can't say that what happened was unlikely. I remember snapping up a 3DS on day one and then this happening to me with B/W2.

This time I held off as I saw it coming. Man I'd be so pissed right now if I had a Switch.

This is why I won't pick up a switch until the game I really want is out on the shelves. Most likely pikmin 4 or a new Metroid. Too many wait and sees.

There are 150m dses out there tho.
This is like saying after ps4's launch there are 2m ps4 out there and 80m ps3.

Make it cross gen atleast honestly by that logic.
