Shenmue 3 delayed to 2nd half of 2018.

They should never have announced 2017 in the first place.
The December 2017 window was set before the KS launched. They had no way of knowing it would even reach its initial goal, let alone exceed it in record-breaking fashion.

There is also this proviso in the KS FAQ:

How confident are you in your ship date?

A rigorous budget and schedule has been worked out with our production team and we believe our target of 2017 holiday season is within reach. That said, our goal is to make the best game possible (and one that the fans want!) so please understand the schedule may change as the project evolves. Frequent updates will be posted on the Update page.

I'm fine with it. I backed a a bunch of stuff on KS and the only project that I've ever gotten in the estimated time frame was a Cyanide and Happiness card game.

I'll patiently wait.

Delays or releasing on time won't change the fact if a game is shit. Lord I hate that quote.

Yeah, but that's now what he was referring (The quote is from Miyamoto btw) if a game was to be released with bugs it would heavily prejudice the public perception of the game.
That quote is quite old, because in the past devs couldn't just as easily patch it like nowadays. I don't see any reason to hate that quote.

More like the second half of 2020.

I truly don't see this game as well as a few others being released before 2020. Simply not going to happen in my opinion and if by some miracle it does, then I'll consider it a bonus.

I haven't played Shenmue before
(waiting for the HD remasters like you guys!)
, so forgive my ignorance, but how feasible would it be for SEGA to do a Kiwami style re-release of Shenmue 1 and 2?

I mean in terms of reusing the old assets from Yakuza Kiwami. Are these games similar enough for them to be able to reuse a good chunk of those assets in Shenmue 1 & 2 remake, or would they still need to built a lot of new assets for those games from ground up?

Why is everyone so cynical about this game releasing in a reasonable window (or ever), because it's a Kickstarter?

Yu Suzuki has decades in the industry and numerous AAA games under his belt. And it's not like this title has been in development hell, it was simply never green lit.

I could understand being hesitant about whether they can put lightning back in the bottle 15 years later, but that's another argument entirely.

makes sense - it was announced 2015, so 2-3 years for development has always been the standard. Now if they said 2020, then that would of been terrible.

Not going to happen, unfortunately.

Despite both being set in Japan, the Yakuza games and the original Shenmue are very different depictions. Shenmue II moves into Hong Kong and Southern China, and there's probably very little from Yakuza's assets that would be appropriate.

The good news is, even when merely upscaled Shenmue's original graphics are still great at creating a sense of place.

what is the chance that this game will be ultimately disappointing

I can only imagine that it's because they hate seeing game developers succeed or something

...unless they come from one of the big AAA companies that they claim to hate

Didn't realise it was slated for 2017 release. I always prefer a game to be delayed than be released broken.

I didn't even realize there was a release date/window. And with the delay, it's still earlier than I thought it'd be. Take your time!

Good. Don't rush it and maybe try to fit all of the story of 3 4 and 5 or however many he was planning into this game in case we don't get another one.

I love that whenever delay news happens all the detractors come out of the woodwork to dogpile on a game they have no interest in.

This delay is the best thing that could've happened honestly. This game deserves to be as groundbreaking an amazing as its predecessors. I know it can be too. Just let it cook Yu, take all the time you need.

The earlier window was totally unrealistic. Shenmue 3 in 2 years? Are you for real?

This is moving towards something more realistic. I wouldn't be surprised or take a delay to 2019 as bad news.

There is... a sense of irony seeing these two statements in the same post.

Yeah that didn't escape me when i posted it

But my post is more about expectations of the fans of Shenmue, not so much me expecting the game to actually be bad

Something tells me that no matter how good the game is, its legacy will work against it

The fanbase isn't a monolith and it'll be impossible to please everybody, but the game has a lot going for it in terms of talent and approach.

I'd say, when the chips are truly down, the majority of fans will be happy with it. Nobody is going to get the Shenmue III they've had in their head all these years, and the sooner some fans let go of that fictional fabled version, they'll be more willing to accept what we get in reality.

God damn it :p. Stuff like this is why I'm not paying attention to the development til we get a date. Don't want to tear my hair out.
If you want a more optimistic spin on III not ending the story; at least it's not rushing it to a forced conclusion either. It is still going to be the vision fans fell in love with when they played the originals in that respect.

Hypothetical

Would you pay $150 for a version of Shenmue 3 that came with HD remasters of Shenmue 1 and 2, knowing there is no other way to get copies of the first two games in HD?
