Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

The difference being that the whole "Doritos Pope" debacle was an unintended consequence of the situation. Beyond the meme-worthy resolution of the affair, the marketing deal couldn't have been any different from any other marketing deal in existence.

Now, if Keighley has willingly entered a deal by which he claims something he knows isn't true just so Microsoft can have a big "gotcha!" moment on stage... Man, that's a shitty way to dynamite your credibility. Next time he has some juicy insider info nobody will believe him.

So, yeah. I don't think this is a PR stunt, especially considering Microsoft has stated in the past that they are aiming for a "premium product". That, or Keighley is a souless mercenary who would sell his credibility in a heartbeat... which I don't think he is.

Exactly, one is not like the other. Actively deceiving consumers so a company can pull a gotcha moment is on another level than the Doritos thing.

yea if this is a controlled leak. What's the point of doing this just mere hours before your conference? Just announce it's $400 there. People will be fine with that.

I can see if this was done like a week ago.

Yeah, it's all really strange.

399 would've been a very good and competitive price vs the Pro but lets not forget the Scorpio was marketed as a premium product, just look at the specs. You're gonna have to pay a premium price for that.

Exactly.

This is the setup for the $399 announcement.
I hope it's worth for him to damage his reputation like that.

Everyone is acting like this is supposed to be a mass market device that everyone is going to buy and it's going to save MS.

That's ridiculous.

It's a PREMIUM console marketed toward peoole with money to buy premium things.

Why would MS go to Geoff for a controlled leak? He coul'd be wrong, but I really doubt he's doing it so MS can shock people with a lower price.

I mean, im not shocked. But this is extremely disappointing if true. The average customer will see that price, laugh their ass off, then go buy a pro if they want a new console. Especially if that price drop is true

The main reason why I liked the Pro unveil was because Sony priced it FARILY. It was 100$ more, it hit the original [and obviously popular and attractive] launch price of the PS4, and it offered a nice bonus in performance, bigger hard drive, and few other features. It was a viable alternative for those who wanted to get a new console, and if they wanted to upgrade, old PS4 still held the OK price. Yeah, it could have been unveiled and marketed a bit better, but overall, it offers a good value.

But no matter how much power it has, an optional midgen console with no amazing exclusives in 2017 cannot find success with $499 price.

No casual in their right mind [and MS needs casuals now more than ever, all the core users have already picked their sides] will enter the store and pick Scorpio when they can move few feet and get ordinary Xbone S and leave $300 in their pocket. Scorpio costs more than Xbone and PS4Slim combined. Crazy!

Ps Pro is $400, so $499 seems reasonable if it will have the best console 3rd party experience and a few high caliber exclusives.

I bought 2 Pros just for Nioh.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Specs wise it seems like it's still a good value compared to building a comparable PC but it requires sacrificing modularity and an enormous library of games.

A controlled leak to swerve people's expectations?

What is this? The WWE? How do you guys come up with this stuff.

But don't you know, big mega corporations base all their decisions around those MIC DROP moments at a conference like E3.

(The WWE comparison is great. This thread is amazing.)

500$U$/650-700$CAN would be a disaster UNLESS Scorpio is some kind of PC optimized for high-end gaming.

But if it only serves as a "better" Xbox One, DOA. No one is really interested in that, especially when you can build a very good PC at this cost and with Xbox Play Anywhere.

Such a shame.

Microsoft could have done something special pricing it at $399.

At $499, it'll just be a extreme niche machine, not able to do anything to disrupt the market.

Not gonna lie , I feel the same way too lol but I don't want to think that deep about it.

If Scorpio is $499, Microsoft can wave their loyal fan base goodbye...

This. I wonder if anyone in the US is going to buy it at this price. Rest of the world won't and there isn't one thing marketing can do to fix this.

What's the point of it then? Feels stupid to launch a premium device when you barely can keep up with your standard device.

They put so much marketing and research in to this thing. Getting deals and optimize their games. So much effort for a little bit of premium money?

I can't put my finger on it but the tweet doesn't seem very Keighley like.

Keighley is generally not in the business of leaking privileged information that's given to him. That's not how you go about finding work as a presenter covering the entertainment industry. So this is very uncharacteristic. I wouldn't be surprised if it's just a facetious response to his Twitter poll, but then he's not really known for being cheeky like that either.

Obvious statement is obvious. $399 was always a joke price based only on wishes without any basis in fact.

$399 was based on the mistake they made with the Xbox One launch price of $499. If $499 is true then the Scorpio won't help at all to close the gap with Sony. A lot of people will feel that all the hype and build up MS has been doing for the past year would've amounted to a big disappointment.

That better be the 2-4 Terabyte hard drive, generous pack-in, Elite controller price. Hopefully there will be the same price and feature stratification we see with the X1 S.

That's less than expected.

haha

Anyway, this is crazy.

I don't even get the point in the Scorpio, why make it so much more powerful?

Some say to make Xbox generationless, but when PS5 comes out won't it trounce Scorpio and force another upgrade?

I don't know, I feel the whole venture is going to be a bad one.
