Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

Seems weird a host like him would be leaking something important like that.

I'm ok with any price up to $800.

Convinced this is PR. Question is, is it because they want to "shock" us with a $399 announcement, or are they bracing us for the fact that it is actually $499?

My money is on the former.
I dont know, $399 is a good news situation, and they don't need to have pr plan around it.

Are people seriously doubting Geoff here? Lol

The stupidity on show in this thread is astounding considering this is an enthusiast website where you would think people have a bit of common sense regarding the hobby they are clearly so passionate about.

If you were building a computer with these specs, building it from seperate parts sourced at the cheapest possible places, it would be well over 499, maybe even more than 599! How on earth does anyone expect this console for 399?

Yes yes and Switch is DOA. I get it. GAF is bad at this.
Xbox One already went through a period of only being $499 so the data is there. GAF being hyperbolic on Switch doesn't mean Scorpio at $499 is suddenly going to defy expectations of very low sales outside of the holiday launch.

Microsoft probably wants him to leak this so that everyone can brace for the disappointment when its announced during the conference. Without leaking ahead of time everyone would be like 10x more pissed.

Nah. Because if they start the conference with price and blow people away with games, consumers will still be thinking about the games after. Now you have everyone going into the conference with a negative mindset as well as everyone anticipating the price reveal to see if the rumor is true instead of focusing on the content.

I stand with 399$

499$ is simply too expensive for the mass console market of today. You can get a PS4 for unter 200€ and there is another brand "new" console for 329€. And a "premium" console for 399€.

Price is all that most people care about.

Why?

They are selling another console that plays the exact same games for a much lower price.

This isn't a mass market consumer product, it's niche.

Scorpio does not replace the Xbox One, it compliments it and fleshes out the product line.

This isn't the Pro. Microsoft has hyped this up to be more than a niche product.

Agreed and I think it leaves a little wriggle room to make do a timed drop of 449 for the Holidays or depending on pre-orders and such.

I have to admit Gaf has some fascinating reasoning!

Who is Geoff Keighly, He's not even in the industry, Is he even connected?

Anyone saying this is either stupid or too lazy to find out that this is the guy who put on the Game Awards Show. He's put in his dues and is more connected than you and I will ever be. Not saying that is why he know's the price but it makes some of ya'll look dumb for even asking of shooting down his credibility in a demeaning sense with out establishing some facts.

I will wait for the conference but some of you are just I don't even know. Fanboys maybe?

There was a time I use to look to Gaf for definitive information as an intelligent source for great conversation. The good ole' days.

Uhm, assuming it will translate to 499€, i can now buy a PS4Pro for 345, from Amazon (so not even looking around for crazy deals), let alone what i'll find this holiday season.

We knew the Scorpio was gonna cost more, and with good reason, since it's significantly beefier, but in terms of games.... i hope they'll show enough exclusive stuff (be it games or features) to justify that extra cash.

if it's actually really powerful it's not crazy, it's just the xb1 has so little exclusives, no vr support and pc cross play so why would I not just buy a gaming pc

I don't have a pro but the ps4 has a decent amount of exclusives that really utilize it along with psvr which I imagine is much better with pro

If was 499 with an unnecessary peripheral and lower power than its cheaper competitor.

If Scorpio is $500, it makes sense. A $400 Scorpio isn't going to help close the sales gap with the PS4, the console targets a niche demographic, and they've been labeling it a premium console for months. So why lose money on such a product?

A great, and long term, exclusive line up with an aggressive price point on the S model would help close the gap more than a $400 Scorpio ever would.

Comparisons to mistakes made with the OG XBO at $500 are also flawed. MS didn't offer an alternative option at a cheaper price back then. Well they do now.

I agree it's odd that he's revealing this now but for those wishing for $400, you should probably rethink your expectations.

The Xbox One S is a $250 safety net. There's no problem with having a premium option. The PS4 Pro gets outsold 5:1 even with its $399 price point.

But the difference is MS are seemingly putting all their eggs in the Scorpio basket. They want this to sell gangbusters because the budget option isn't. They've talked this thing up for a year. Well before Sony and the Pro and much more hype than Sony gave the Pro. To MS this is their second coming of Christ but at that price it's simply not happening.

If it is a controlled leak, then the reason would be so this is out of the way, and people already had their reaction on forums and social media about it, so the press conference itself doesn't get overshadowed by it. Or at least that might be the intent.

I just don't see them leaking a higher price at this point in some attempt to create a false narrative of negative emotions around your product.

I'm not a MS guy, but i honestly hope it's not leaking a higher price just to create a narrative, that's too low.

But i seriously believe if it's to soften the blow of it at least a little beat, create a expectation by the most reliable guy that this industry can have when it comes to information (problem that everyone is pointing this up is exactly that he is TOO reliable, he knows everthing every year and never leaks anything).

This is exactly what they are mostly trying to avoid, imo.

Oh man I wish he didnt spoil it. Would have been glorious to see the meltdowns on GAF live.

Geoff works for himself. Self-made. Doesn't need MS, MS doesn't need him. He either chose to leak that himself, or was told it was okay to leak it through MS. How can they be mad at Geoff for leaking just the price. If it were more (design, games, etc), I'd think they would be upset.
