Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

The stupidity on show in this thread is astounding considering this is an enthusiast website where you would think people have a bit of common sense regarding the hobby they are clearly so passionate about.

If you were building a computer with these specs, building it from seperate parts sourced at the cheapest possible places, it would be well over 499, maybe even more than 599! How on earth does anyone expect this console for 399?

If anything its always the opposite, GAF has a handful of people who are informed but 90% of people who post here simply like to play alot of games... or at least talk about them.

This isn't the Pro. Microsoft has hyped this up to be more than a niche product.

No they haven't.

The corporate cheerleaders and the rabbid fanboys running around Twitter with that pathetic Scorpio icon have.

Microsoft have always said this would be a premium product.

I mean, uh, I'm not going to say it's a dumb idea. But I doubt Keighley would fall for something like that...

He wouldn't. I feel very confident now that he's gone on record saying this it's a $499 price point. Which is pretty crazy to me. No matter how "Premium" of a product this is MS doesn't have near the 1st party output to really make this price a viable strategy imo.

We will see though. ME better be guns blazing at their conference to justify this in the eyes of consumers

Seems weird a host like him would be leaking something important like that. I sure wouldn't hire him again. Never been a fan myself.

I'm ok with any price up to $800.

This.

Not sure what he is trying to achieve by 'leaking' it. Either he is going to piss off people he works with, or is in cahoots with MS.

Considering the custom hardware in this thing, I wouldn't be too surprised at all. Judging by this thread, it seems most people convinced themselves it had to be $399.99 for some reason.

Regardless of outcome, I sense this is going to be a fun evening of E3 shenanigans.

When Halo 6 launches next year it will be aimed at

25 million Xbox one/S owners
25 million PC players

MS doesn't really care if Scorpio is at 1 mill(499) or 3 mill(399)

Why sell at Scorpio at a loss(399) when your main audience is the other 50 million potential buyers!

^^

This is exactly it

I don't think so. I imagine the backlash he would get would be pretty immense. Although, it also doesn't make sense for him to leak this in the first place. He's extremely well known in the industry and I would have to imagine that this would sour relationships. I know I wouldn't even give him the chance to view unnanounced hardware, games, and features after this.

I'm hard pressed to believe they had him announce the price to see reactions early.

To work with the conspiracies, they may adjust the price by $50 within these hours. All it takes it a change in the PowerPoint presentation and the teleprompter.

However, MS is a leaky ship, so I believe this 100% unless stated otherwise.

Currently, the price is $500, and nothing less.

Patiently waiting for all the smug posters who claimed it would obviously be $399 to show up

After all MS have said, and all the discussion of expensive parts even DF pointing out that the price will be 499 I don't know why some were hell bent on driving 399 narrative.

499 was expected, day 1

Folks (like me) are convinced it's $399. And for the sake of Xbox and its fans I hope that's true. Geoff is saying with confidence it will be $499. Who's to say we're not both right?

$399 core - no controller or other bells & whistles (maybe a smaller HD too)
$499 standard with controller, better HD
$599 deluxe - some sort of fancy finish, or another controller, games, autographed picture of Phil etc.

Pachter seems to agree with me.

A console sold without controller, yeah sure. I mean you can't even basicaly use it without a controller, you can't go through the menu, that is a pretty dumb thing to think. xD

I just don't think Microsoft is in a position to release a niche product. I'm probably in for $499, but my friends probably aren't in it for over $399.

I think there's a very limited market for the PS4 Pro and Scorpio but there is a definite market there for this type of approach, if this is true then I think it's far too much of a reduction in market size.

Obviously, there will be people who rush out and buy this at $499 and they'll be very happy with it but I do have visions of the leadership of the PlayStation division chuckling away happily to themselves if this is what's actually announced.

I can't justify that 🤔 It's gonna have to prove quite a lot of third party multiplatform games are significantly above the PS4 Pro version to not be DOA

one word "Hope". people want great competition. don't know if a fancy box for $499 helps MS.

I just dont get you guys. Is that a lot? Isnt this your hobby? You get thousands of hours of entertainment from that machine. Complaining about 499 smh

My guess was 449 but not really surprised at 499. If it comes with the elite controller at 499 then it's okay but if not then I'm not going to buy it at that price.

Why?

They are selling another console that plays the exact same games for a much lower price.

This isn't a mass market consumer product, it's niche.

Scorpio does not replace the Xbox One, it compliments it and fleshes out the product line.

They're already behind the competition. Why would they release a product with the intention of it being niche and not improving their current position?

$499 would be a hard sell regardless. Doesn't make sense.

On the other hand, a $450 / $250 split between Scorpio and Xbox One S would be pretty good.

$200 more than your base console is still very much a premium price.

He left himself a way out (by how he worded it) so we will never know.
But I do think its the later.

If its why I think it is, its a stunt. no one if falling for anything.

But it doesn't have the makings of a stunt (like the MGS5 stuff did). Plus if Keighley's wrong here, it's likely few will ever trust what he has to say moving forward. It'd be too big a hit to his credibility (regardless of whether or not he gave himself a way out)

Phil Spencer said:
"I call it a premium console because I want people to be clear that the customer we're building that for is the premium gaming customer," said Spencer. "The person who buys the majority of the games, the person who's playing the most games, spending the most hours, spending the most dollars. It's like our Elite controller. I call that a premium controller.

Phil has been banging the drum on Scorpio being a premium console (see high end, like the Elite controller). That quote is from March. I really do wonder where some of you folks around here get these ideas that are built on delusional and non-existent statements.

It's just really weird how he posted this out of nowhere. I think it's okay to be a bit skeptical.

One thing I never understood was why there was such a backlash with Sony announcing the PS3 at $599, but always forgetting to mention that there was a $499 model at launch as well.

However, when mentioning the price of the 360, they quote the $299 for the core model instead of $399.

Look at the those prices at the launch of the previous gen, I think 499 for the Scorpio is reasonable for what you'll be getting, it doesn't mean it'll sell well though
