Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

If he confirmed the price, then why would he mention it could change? Unless A) his source said it could change or B) he is uncertain (which means he shouldn't have reported it), either way, the price is not "confirmed".

This thread feels like the one episode from Scrubs where everyone buys a lottery ticket expecting to win, hyping themselves up so much that they think they'd already won until the day came and expectations met reality.

I don't believe it, unless he's talking about a premium edition. In any case 499 is too much for a base version.

Lol no chance Geoff.
It's $399 or dead in the water and MS know that.

The same way MS knew DRM was a bad idea? The same way MS knew launching a console at $499 against competition that was $100 cheaper and was more powerful was a bad idea? The same way MS knew that moneyhating timed exclusives instead of developing their own was a bad idea? The same way MS knew scrapping sequels to the few exclusives they had just become the first installment didn't light the sales charts on fire was a bad idea?

People keep painting MS as some brilliant and insightful company when history has shown them to be anything but in recent years.

Not that Sony and Nintendo haven't made colossal fuck-ups in the past but their consoles are selling like hotcakes right now so their past failures don't matter at the moment.

Why would Geoff leak the price on the morning of the announcement? Call me crazy, but I'd say that the price really is $499, Geoff knows that that's a big mistake, and he's leaking it early in an attempt to show MS the public outcry if they do that. He's giving them a chance to change it.

not sure how easy it is to simply adjust the price that much on a whim

aren't these prices set long before consoles even make it to e3?

Pretty much what I expected. Although I think $450 would have been the sweet spot. I don't see many buying this.

Honestly? This wouldn't surprise me. I mean, neither would $499, but when was the last time Keighley dropped a hot and potentially damaging scoop like this?
Its not damaging when it can work in MS favour

When MS reveal $399 people would be more excited because of this

The stupidity on show in this thread is astounding considering this is an enthusiast website where you would think people have a bit of common sense regarding the hobby they are clearly so passionate about.

If you were building a computer with these specs, building it from seperate parts sourced at the cheapest possible places, it would be well over 499, maybe even more than 599! How on earth does anyone expect this console for 399?
Because release a console who will play the same games that Xbox One and PS4 play with only better graphics and performance but for the double of the price is a death sentence

No matter what happens, this conference will be amazing, I am fully hype.

Consoles provide better bang for your buck than computers at launch. The more apt comparison is against the pro because it's almost identical in design and form factor with some upgraded components. Pro came out last year for $399 and the Scorpio provides upgrades to GPU and ram this year and not much else.

I think you are more stupid to benchmak Scorpio against computer components than anyone else benchmarking it against the pro.

One thing I never understood was why there was such a backlash with Sony announcing the PS3 at $599, but always forgetting to mention that there was a $499 model at launch as well.

However, when mentioning the price of the 360, they quote the $299 for the core model instead of $399.

Look at the those prices at the launch of the previous gen, I think 499 for the Scorpio is reasonable for what you'll be getting, it doesn't mean it'll sell well though

the $499 model was almost impossible to find and was discontinued in months

$499 doesn't seem that crazy. This is a high-spec machine for people with 4K TVs

$499 is definitely a great price for that console + hardware, it just won't sell to any significant degree especially outside of the US, but then based on Phil's statements I think this was always the plan.

If Geoff himself wants the system to be $399 he could leak $499 to help Microsoft see the backlash before their conference in the hopes that they would change it.

"Unless something changes today"

Of course it will, lol. Ya'll being played like a fiddle.
This is basically how I feel. The old car salesman trick. Start with the high price, deliver the real price, be commended for it, etc etc.

This thing really has to be $399. I can't see any other way this works out in the intended way for them otherwise.

Feel like no amount of marketing could have prepared people for this. They've constantly told people it was going to a more expensive SKU.

You mean that picture people got from googling random numbers wasn't correct? I'm shocked! Shocked I say!
This post will be embarrassing if Geoff is wrong later

well.......guess I don't have to worry about an Xbox console for awhile and selling my One S for new parts for my PC seems to be the better option

Especially with an absolute shit tier CPU

Didn't this price backfire on them last time with the X1. Somebody running the shots must be extremely hard headed.

Yeah it's pretty astounding MS is going to have a repeat performance. When they got on stage and dropped $499 price last time it was immediately apparent they had made a mistake.

And they are going to go up there and do it again. I actually was saying for months now I was expecting $499 but recently I'd started to wonder if maybe they would take a hit on hardware to get a return investment on software and services but that's not happening.

Anything short of a mind blowing presentation here and this price point faces major major blow back imo

The difference between a $400 upgrade and a $500 upgrade is the difference between a 'no' and a 'hell no' for me.

Especially for the console I play the least.

Are people serious with this? You really think that after all the number crunching they went through they are going to see some negative forum posts and change their entire plan.

I just dont get you guys. Is that a lot? Isnt this your hobby? You get thousands of hours of entertainment from that machine. Complaining about 499 smh

It's not only about us. If the mainstream audience ignores the product, then third party publishers have no reason to put a lot of effort into Xbox One Scorpio support.

XB1 was $499 despite being weaker, Scorpio being $499 would actually make sense. It's the most powerful console. I do believe this is just to gauge interest though and the console will be $399.

Remember when PS4 was cheaper and more powerful? That's how you make yourself competitive.
Sony was only able to do that because Microsoft traded power for media capabilities and motion controls. Those increased the price of the XB1 without increasing its power and left room for the PS4 to beat it on both. Sony has continued to be very cost conscious which is why the Pro doesn't have the high end specs enthusiasts want. That leaves no room for Microsoft to undercut them on both price and power.

how much are standalone 4k blu ray players these days?

considering the specs i guess its reasonable, if i were still buying consoles on the reg it wouldnt put me off

I'm more curious as to why he would "leak" the "price" when we're 5 hours away from the conference. Seems weird...

Phil has been banging the drum on Scorpio being a premium console (see high end, like the Elite controller). That quote is from March. I really do wonder where some of you folks around here get these ideas that are built on delusional and non-existent statements.

Stop. Microsoft wants Scorpio to sell.

$500 wouldn't be niche. It would be a disaster.
