Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

Lmao you could literally make this argument for anything ever to defend a price.
Inflation. Imagine how expensive the last gen consoles would be today, if adjusted for inflation.
I want MORE expensive consoles, so they are more premium machines. I have a ps4 and a pro and they are badly built, noisy, hot running machines that have weakass CPUs and fucking ancient harddrives. All to cut that cost.

Feel like no amount of marketing could have prepared people for this. They've constantly told people it was going to a more expensive SKU.

Exactly. I feel like right now there are two groups on GAF. One group has tapered expectations, pays attention to the marketing speak and understands what it means for pricing.

The other seems some weird picture with a robot and automatically assumes that it's legit while calling someone like Geoff Keighley a liar. This is nuts.

Stop. Microsoft wants Scorpio to sell.

$500 wouldn't be niche. It would be a disaster.

Nah. It'll sell at that price. It has the power to do actual 4K (if the specs are legit) at a price way lower than a 4K gaming PC. I mean, no one thought the elite controller would sell for $150 and it's revered as one of the best built controllers ever. If you give people something that feels like a premium product, they'll pay for it.

Ah, just finished getting my full body yakuza-style tattoo that says "XBOX PROJECT SCORPIO WILL COST $399"

Now to check Twitter and take a big sip of Gamer Fuel

No matter what happens, this conference will be amazing, I am fully hype.

I laughed so hard at this lmao 😂

This thread is pure gold

They're already behind the competition. Why would they release a product with the intention of it being niche and not improving their current position?

$499 would be a hard sell regardless. Doesn't make sense.

Both Pro and Scorpio were always going to be niche. If they want to make a bigger dent in the market, they would try their hardest to get Xbox One S to 199$.

Pic of what the tattoo looks like plsase

For what u get price is fine. But the problem is most won't buy it. That means developers won't ever push it because of cost. I'll wait for the real next get upgrade to spend that kinda money.

If Geoff himself wants the system to be $399 he could leak $499 to help Microsoft see the backlash before their conference in the hopes that they would change it.

Yep, Microsoft will change the price hours before their conference. /s

MS would never scrap their entire plans after internet backlash.

I meant before the conference. Obviously if it becomes clear they have an incoming flop closer to release they would make am adjustment. But that would be months from now and it wouldn't matter what Geoff did

He wouldn't. I feel very confident now that he's gone on record saying this it's a $499 price point. Which is pretty crazy to me. No matter how "Premium" of a product this is MS doesn't have near the 1st party output to really make this price a viable strategy imo.

We will see though. ME better be guns blazing at their conference to justify this in the eyes of consumers
Why should first party play such a big role when deciding to buy a console when it will be the most powerful console period? All the third party games will look better and I think that will matter to people.

Yeah it's pretty astounding MS is going to have a repeat performance. When they got on stage and dropped $499 price last time it was immediately apparent they had made a mistake.

And they are going to go up there and do it again. I actually was saying for months now I was expecting $499 but recently I'd started to wonder if maybe they would take a hit on hardware to get a return investment on software and services but that's not happening.

Anything short of a mind blowing presentation here and this price point faces major major blow back imo
Well the original xb1 was less powerful than the ps4,was the only sku and had a ton of other downsides to it

Here's the question though:

If you were MS and although you could bring the box in at $399, keeping at that price-point would require you to take huge shortcuts on the rest of the package, how would that fit in with your overall pitch?

What I'm getting at is that giving their new high-end offering a small HDD and regular controllers kinda stands against it as premium product, even though those things are going to add a significant amount to unit cost.

Being realistic, 2TB for the HDD is pretty much required.

$499 is definitely a great price for that console + hardware, it just won't sell to any significant degree especially outside of the US, but then based on Phil's statements I think this was always the plan.

Well, if that's the case, then 499 makes sense and they should just stick to their guns. That's that the OG Xbone launched at afterall (but that did include the Kinect)

This console is definitely going to put Xbox at the top of the heap when it comes to power for the remainder of this gen and I guess if that is another one of their goals, then they'll certainly accomplish that, plus the low sales to a limited audience they're targetting

Most Likley scenario is that Microsoft believe in their product, but is actually priced at £499. They just want to get the bad news out of the way so it doesn't ruin their conference and they can deliver their message once the furore has died down.

Ain't going to lie, my first thought was marketing stunt as well. But i think Geoff is beyond that now.

That's not how it works though, and i'm sure Geoff knows this better any of us. There are marketing strategies made for prices way ahead of time, whatever the price is, it is already decided.

It didn't come from Geoff, whether they are using him for this or not i don't know, for it's seriously hard to believe he would leak this, specially in the morning of the conference.

One thing I never understood was why there was such a backlash with Sony announcing the PS3 at $599, but always forgetting to mention that there was a $499 model at launch as well.

However, when mentioning the price of the 360, they quote the $299 for the core model instead of $399.

Look at the those prices at the launch of the previous gen, I think 499 for the Scorpio is reasonable for what you'll be getting, it doesn't mean it'll sell well though
The cheaper PS3 was heavily gimped in comparison. Smaller HDD, no BC, fewer ports...

Nah. It's different because they have the cheaper Xbox One S and they have the most powerful console. Nobody gave a shit about the Kinect and PS4 was more powerful. That's what killed them.

Remember when they released the Elite controller? Backlashed followed by pre-ordering it. When the conference is over and you see what this thing can do it'll be a buy.

1080p peeps also see huge benefits... especially if you have a freesync monitor. or any future TV that supports the new HDMI spec.

You will benefit massively from downsampling, but for Freesync you will need support for Freesync over HDMI, which currently there are no more than 5 monitors that support. And they have all been released within the last 2 months. So I doubt many 1080p owners are going to benefit from Freesync.

Depending on final price for Scorpio, I'll probably pick up a monitor cable of taking advantage it later down the line.

Are people serious with this? You really think that after all the number crunching they went through they are going to see some negative forum posts and change their entire plan.

That's fair.

Also, they can always lower the price later (for instance by the time it launches)

I'm more curious as to why he would "leak" the "price" when we're 5 hours away from the conference. Seems weird...

Get the "bad" news out of the way. If it has enough compelling games and looks good, the impact could easily be lessened.

Let's face it, everyone was going in expecting $399, so no matter what they do if they said $499 by themselves -- this would've been the only talking point. Kinda smart tbh.

I personally don't find the price to be that bad.
