Geoff Keighley: Scorpio rumored to cost $499 (he's right, flawless victory)

But that teaser was probably a random image. I mean obviously it was. I knew it was bullshit because bing.com didn't come up with that image.

I don't think you can wave your hand on that teaser. The text could very easily have had no dash in it, just hinting at name and release date. Without the dash, it leads to nothing, but with the dash it leads to that specific image. I don't buy that it wasn't done with intent.

The average consumer doesn't look at consoles as first place or second place machines. That's what fanboys think like. The average consumer will simply ask for the most powerful console. Which will be the Scorpio.

Ah yes, that explains why Xbox and GameCube sold so much more than PS2, why PSP sold more than DS and why PS3 sold more than 360 in America for most of the gen.

No, that's not how the average consumer shops. At all.

Maybe I'm feeling weirdly conspiratorial but why would Geoff of all people leak something like this? Isn't he's involved with the Microsoft presser? Microsoft testing the waters for a potential last minute change?

If this price is true then this thing is DOA.

What an unfathomably bad move if so. Xbox needs momentum, momentum which Playstation is rocketing off with. However, even with good marketing and if they blow us all away tonight $499 is almost certainly DOA. The issue is that the mass market won't see the appeal in a five hundred dollar product for 4k. Those of us who understand the specs and can see how awesome it is (if that's what comes out of tonight's conference) will be all up for paying that price but like I said the mass market won't understand at all why this thing is worth that price.

Did I expect this? Sure. But I really do think a more PS4 Pro price point would have gotten them leverage within an industry they're no longer the champions of.

Guys, the price is $499 and that is what has been rehearsed.

The only thing that can save MS now are game announcements. It would be such a shame if the whole conference was centered around a $500 console that doesn't have any exclusives.

No, without the dash it lead to the same image. Without the dash and Robot lead to the same image. It was just random. Other people got a different image.

If it was as simple as rehearsing with a placeholder price why wouldn't everyone do that every year with everything and there'd never be a leak again?

I love how Geoff has been in here to restate it and people still don't believe him. Now we're on to "Geoff must be being deliberately mislead... For some reason" arguments.

I love a bit of wild denial. It reminds me of when MisterX tried to tell everybody that the reason why MS didn't tell ANYONE, not even their own developers, about the extra, secret GPU in the Xbox One was that they didn't want Sony to go out of business. This shit is gold. God I love E3 / new console reveals.

This thread reads like your average 'Nintendo is doomed' narrative.

I've been slating Microsoft the entire generation (and own an Xbone), but why not wait to see the official unveil before writing off the value proposition.

Some people will still give them shit for the soften blow controlled leak, i think it's fair and really smart. It's in full effect right now. Nothing wrong about it.

Premium product, people bitching about a premium price. If $499 aint your bag then get am S its pretty simple logic.
Go price up a pc that will get you 4k at even 30fps and please come back when you can get it even close to 499

They could rehearse with $999. Companies have been known to use placeholders for sensitive info in that kind of context. If the rehearsal is the only source on this I'd be 50:50 on it.

It's definitely $499. Geoff wouldn't hurt his credibility giving false info. It's a win-win for him, he gets to break the news, and Microsoft can gently soften the blow of the price point before the conference.

Excellent comment. Why did Keighley only get news of the price on the day? It might be that Microsoft hadn't finalised it until very recently

However I still have this niggling suspicion that Phil Spencer wants to recreate the Andrew House PS4 price announcement moment, so he will reveal Scorpio as £399!

disclaimer, not a xbox fanboy nor will I be buying a Scorpio at any price..or a pro for that matter.

I don't understand why or how... $499 is too much? I see these reactions everywhere, but is Scorpio not positioned to be the "best" or a luxury box? I am really confused.

People that want the best console tech will likely have no issue paying that price. 500USd is objectively not much money in the frame of "best". If you can't or don't want to pay that much... you can play on normal Xbox..or I guess save up for it.

From the reactions here...Microsoft has to build a lot of value to justify that price(if real) though ,so we will see how they do. Should be interesting.

It's fine for what it is, but it's a niche within a niche. It's not going to be the thing that turns the Xbox One into what the PS3 became around 2011 though, which is what I think a lot of Xbox fans were hoping for.

When your competitor has a similar product (albeit slightly weaker) that's got a year on the market under it's belt and a much more diverse game library, then throwing an extra $100 on top of the price makes it an even more difficult sell.

Can't believe all the people scoffing at $499.

Tons of people think the PS4 pro is worth it at $399 and it's a kind of a joke of an upgrade. I bought a PS4 pro, but I'll happily pay $100 more than that thing for a significantly more powerful machine.

Maybe if the PS4 pro had a UHD player. Based on current market prices for UHD players, that drive alone is worth the price difference.

If the PS4 Pro seems great at $400 and $500 is obscene for a much moire powerful machine with a UHD drive, then this clearly isn't for you. Then again, it's Microsoft, they can't seem to win around here.

That's a great selling pitch.

"The average consumer wants the most powerful console and that is the Scorpio"

Yeah...

I think back to all the times I bought a console...

"Yes my good man, please direct me to your most powerful console please...price is no factor at all"

Scorpio at $499 is dead
