It seems that a certain extent of people here don't have an understanding or refusing to understand that Project Scorpio is meant for those who don't mind paying for more to get more. = Premium system and pricing. Here's a quote from Phil Spencer.
"I call it a premium console because I want people to be clear that the customer we're building that for is the premium gaming customer," said Spencer. Again Phil and his team has said many times that Project Scorpio is a premium system. So please don't go into rioting, if you wanted to get mad you should of done it before when he said it not now. I just wanted to say this because a lot of people here are thinking the system will be priced at $400. It would be amazing to see it priced at that but for what this system is offering I don't think it's going to be cheap.

I've been slating Microsoft the entire generation (and own an Xbone), but why not wait to see the official unveil before writing off the value proposition.

$499 still seems like a bargain for what's offered (You're not gonna build a PC for $499 that touches this on performance), but I'm not sure it penetrates the mass market at that price. It'll play well with people investing in 4K TVs, though that same audience may just decide to save $300 and pick up an S since 'both do 4K and HDR, right?'

Really, it depends how they sell this to 1080p set owners. Sony did a poor job of that on the Pro, and I feel like there's a connection between that market understanding and the level of Pro support we've seen out of third party studios.

Can't wait to see the full reveal. Fascinating to see how they're marketing this thing.

Did you see how they'll sell that price? I just can't imagine how they'd think Phil Spencer going on stage and saying 499 again would be a good idea.

Phil doesn't make the decisions. He's a big influencer but the final decision on things like this that hit their profit margins will come from higher up the food chain.

What can I say, if this is true, bad move Microsoft. I love your games but you're not on the good side of the cycle to pull this off unless there are some 2017 surprises. You can't go polar opposites in one gen. Early Xbox One had weak ass game management (and hardware) which led to less third party exclusive interest, now they're overcompensating on hardware without a solid international user-base.

There is honestly no reason to let this leak.

Why is someone so "respected" willing to risk it all with a leak like this for internet fame? It's career suicide as he looses all trust and integrity.

Why would Microsoft market like this ? It's amateurish and a cheap shot.

I'm stumped it makes zero sense from both parties.

1) This "leak" by a well-known person has already created a bit of buzz around the new console. This thread alone has got 1500 replies in a relatively short period of time.

2) Now people want to check the news and watch the show to see if the price leak is true.

3) People watching the show are then "surprised" that the console price is actually lower than expcted.

4) Give the initial rumoured premium price of $499, people now see the actual price of 399 as a bargain compared to the expensive 499.

It's a win-win-win-win. So marketing wise, there are plenty of reasons.

I already have a gaming PC. With a monitor that c pats more than a lot of gaming PCs. I'm getting the Scorpio at 499 so i can play all third party games on the superior hardware on my preferred platform of the last 13 years.

It's a good breakdown of MS strategy and thinking behind the product. I've pretty much always thought it was a $499 device.

That doesn't however have any bearing on if the system will actually be successful even within the niche MS are designing it for

They're not? Xbox One S is fine. Not stellar, not fantastic. But fine. Scorpio was never going to turn the tide for Xbox this generation, it's way too late for that. It's not going to do what Kinect did for Xbox 360 or anything. What it can do, however, is maybe attract some third parties to the Xbox brand by giving them the opportunity to release their games on the most powerful console. "Best on Scorpio".
