TYRANNY |OT| Sometimes, Evil Wins [Tiers For Fears]

About to jump into my first play through and had a question on difficulty. I've played through all the IE classics and POE along with dozens of other RPGs. Pretty certain I played through POE on the difficulty above normal.

Not a crazy min maxer but looking for a decent challenge. Should I go normal or the one above it?

Thanks

You may have started already but going by what you say, go for the one above. Tyranny's combat encounters were considerably easier and I say that as someone who's decidedly crap at RTWP.

Picked this up today but one question before I can start; how do I adjust the resolution? In the options menu I have one setting for 1280x800, but I have a retina Mac and would like to set it much higher. What gives?

So I've finally gotten around to playing this. The game seems promising, but I can't help to feel a bit overwhelmed. Trying to keep track of both story, characters, lore and learn the RPG-system at the same time is quite a mouthful. And that's true for a lot of RPG's but this game seems more dense than usual.

So this game has dialogues and decisions with real consequences, right?

I normally play on my PS4 only, but I love games with consequences, so I'm thinking about going back to my PC only for Tyranny.

Explain your definition of real consequences.

Don't worry, Act 1 is the most complex. Past that and the game becomes significantly easier to parse.

Is there a way to enable 4K with this game? The resolution doesn't scale at all even if it's set in options or if I change the Windows desktop resolution

Finished my first playthrough of this today and really enjoyed it. I knew going in that the ending comes up quick and boy, does it ever. I kind of figured where the game would end but it's just so strange how some mechanics like the Edicts are introduced with the idea that you could have some freedom in how you use them but then you seemingly only use them maybe twice in story based ways.

I really enjoyed Tyranny though and will totally be on board with an expansion/sequel.

Did anyone get the Overlord edition? I bought this back at launch but just the main game. Are the extras in the overlord edition worth it? The lore book sounds like it could be good if it meets the same quality standards as PoE did. I don't see an upgrade option though.

It's in sale right now but I also just backed PoE 2 and will get a 50% off code for it in a few weeks, so I'm trying to judge if upgrading to the overlord edition is worth it. I love Obsidian though so I am very likely to do it.

Thanks! I've been an avid D&D player & DM since I started with 2e. I absolutely love 5e, they've done such a great job with it in my opinion.

Obsidian has been great at bringing the D&D feel to their games and both PoE and Tyranny have been amazing at brining this style of crpg back.

Too bad this game didn't sell. I enjoyed it more than Pillars of Eternity. One of the best games I've played in a while.

Just finished this, really enjoyed it. I totally get the comments about combat, for me I got to a certain level of power and the fights became fun but a tad easy. Some still threw me for a loop though.

As for the ending
it did come pretty abruptly. Suddenly I'm an archon, and in the space of 30 mins I'd killed Graven Ashe (after being his ally for the whole game, figured Nerat was weak at that point so I could finish him off on my own) subjugated Tunon and killed Bleden Mark. I also managed to finish the game without recruiting Sirin, the final cutscenes informing me of this.

Love the world, and I loved how the game forced me to roleplay. If anyone's interested you can check out my more formal review here.

Good news from an interesting post over at the Codex examining information that Obsidian filed to the SEC following the PoE 2 Fig campaign. It has some sales figures for their other games but also seems to confirm that there is DLC being worked on for Tyranny. Maybe it'll get a reveal at ParadoxCon coming up soon?

Woot. I really hope the devs also take the opportunity to fix some of the design issues in the base game.

Tyranny DLC seems to be burying the lede a bit:

Obsidian currently has four games in development: Pillars of Eternity II; Tyranny DLC; Pathfinder: Adventures; and an unannounced title with a major publisher.

Did we know about this? New thread worthy?

We've known about the project for awhile yeah. The "major publisher" thing may be new but I think was also assumed. Given their relationship with Paradox and the kinda recent hiring of Leonard Boyarsky I think a lot of people are assuming it could be a Vampire game.

Tyranny is on sale on Steam and the Paradox website-- 33% off.

If you backed Pillars of Eternity II you should have a 33% off discount code as a backer reward. The discounts stack and I managed to get Tyranny for $20.19 at the Paradox Store!

Man, the timing on this sale...

Is it worth going for Archeon or Overlord, or should I just go for the main game? I like to get those extras but I haven't gotten through any of the novellas for the other WRPGs so I'm not sure it's really a good idea. Still, about $25 with that coupon...

If anyone want's 50% off the Paradox Store price for Tyranny (a steam key), just ask - got 50% off coupon waiting for anyone

EDIT - it's gone!

It's incredibly frustrating how hard it is to find out if the additions in the higher tiers is worthwhile or not. I guess for $10 extra after 50% coupon it wouldn't be the biggest of deals, but no one talked about what they thought of those additions? Really?

Eh, everything except for the soundtrack is pretty superfluous. If you listen to game soundtracks I do quite recommend it, though, even if it's a bit short. So I would go for the middle tier if you do and if not just stick to the base game unless you just want to Obsidian/Paradox with an extra $10.

While technically the answer IS "yes" to the soundtracks, it's really more of JRPGs and Japanese games in general usually, with western games being much less frequent. Maybe I'll be surprised here, but with PoE and Torment I wasn't too inclined to keep listening to the music. So, yeah, will probably just get the standard soon and leave it at that.

Thread is pretty quiet but does anyone have a recommended faction for a first playthrough?

A few hours in and I have been merciful when I had the opportunity. Just got the chance to have the rebels swear their fealty to me. Seems like the most "good guy" choice but don't know if it will make the game more difficult or close off narrative threads.

Will most likely only play the game once so just wondering if any of them are better than the others.

Thanks

Awesome! I'm totally down for more Tyranny! I think of all the revitalized CRPGs that have come out in the past few years like Pillars, Wasteland and Divinity, Tyranny is the only one I've managed to actually finish so far.

The new Humble Bundle includes some significant coupons for the game as well. Hopefully they can get some interest going with an expansion announcement and grab some more sales.

It just occurred to me that the muddying of Kyros's gender might actually be significant.

Enough to suggest that his/her lack of a defined gender has a bigger purpose beyond being cheeky. Like, say if we were able to play as Kyros in the early days of the conquest.
