Minecraft "Better Together" (PC/X1/Switch/Mobile): Crossplay, Dedicated Servers+More

A friend and I were playing Minecraft in the same room today, he on his Xbox One and me on my Switch. We used the same seed, so we'd be in the "same world" even if seperately, but we really wished we could play together.

Five hours later? This gets announced. Win!

just FYI, console Minecraft supports up to 4 player splitscreen

I'm pretty hyped for this but I assume people playing between PC and Switch will be locked in on the Switch's smaller map size, correct? Not a huge deal but I wonder how they're going to handle that.

Sony has allowed cross platform play the longest. Seeing as Minecraft isn't PC/PS4 at least shows you it's a Microsoft thing.

Reminds me of the whole Final Fantasy XIV situation where Microsoft doesn't want cross play with PC/PS4 or make the game available without gold subscription so that's why it's not on the console even though SE if ready to go with it.

I'm still waiting on private cloud servers for xbox one. (realms I guess?) Its been a year and still nothing. My kids have to leave a controller afk with my profile to play in our world. So unnecessary...
I just updated the OP with official Mojang PR and some good news you might enjoy!

Sony is the leader this gen so they don't gain much from cross play.

Your friends have Minecraft on ps4? Guess you need it on ps4 as well.

Remember, Microsoft gains from Minecraft regardless of platform. Sony only gains from minecraft on ps4 and marginally so.

In case you all missed it:

Dedicated servers are coming to ALL "Better Together" platforms!

Independent servers, run by members of the amazing Minecraft community, have been around since the earliest days of the game. They're essentially online platforms where you can socialise, play and collaborate with millions of other players! Basically, servers make it easier for you to enjoy multiplayer Minecraft and access new mini-games, worlds, and friends to craft with! Nice!

Unlike Minecraft Realms, which gives you access to a private, cloud-hosted world for you and your friends, servers are open and accessible to everyone - some have monthly users in the millions!

So this Summer, all platforms receiving the Better Together Update will then have a server browser in the Minecraft start menu. This'll let you search a list of servers which you can join right away! We'll be launching with four servers – Lifeboat, Mineplex, InPVP, and Cubecraft - with more to follow. Plus we've made sure that parental controls and other safety features will be in place, so you decide what your child can access. We'll have a more detailed summary of servers closer to the update. After all, we live to serve(er)! ...sorry.

Xbox One, Switch, and PC will all essentially have the same version of the game.

Multiplayer between Switch and Xbox is HUGE. I love Minecraft Switch, but my biggest problem is how closed off it feels. This changes things.

I think it's great how I can build my world on Switch, and then access it on XB1 with better draw distances.

Does this mean that we'll be able to play 5x5 on Switch or unlimited PC maps on consoles?

I suppose PS4 isn't a "better together" platform?

Doesn't look like it. Which is a bummer, because I think all Minecraft players should be able to take advantage of this.

I imagine they'll have to allow for unlimited and huge worlds, because it would limit where players could play.

Wasn't that Nintendo's slogan for their E3 2012? Five years later it's a reality, lol.

Nintendo's been ready for five years, just no Dev wanted to bother with it (how many online-enabled MP multiplats even went to Wii U? CoD and Assassin's Creed?)

I think it's possible. One of the limitations of unlimited worlds on console was save size, which isn't a problem if the world is hosted/saved elsewhere.

Why Sony does it is obvious but it's shitty and they should be called out for it. Rocket League should have been that game a long time ago.

That's a pretty big shot across the bow if the PS4 version isn't getting dedicated servers. Whatever hang-ups Sony have, they might want to reconsider them.

Right, because the world would be hosted on PC. Switch players would just be guests.

This is amazing.

I wonder on a technical level, are they literally just swapping the One and Switch versions to the Win10/Mobile codebase? So sort of a soft re-release of the game?

That terrible by Sony - too much to expect some form of explanation or statement from them?

Its Mine craft - cross platform woes shouldn't stop something like this on such a title...

I wonder what they're going to do about that. I guess if the Halo pack can be on the NS, then the Mario pack can be on the Xbox One. Gonna be strange to see that happen.

They mention it in this article that those details are being negotiated:

When it comes to platform specific content, such as the Switch and Wii U Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, a representative for the Minecraft team said ”We are still working out [if platform-specific content will be available to a player on all platforms] and hope to have more details on that as we get closer to launch."

This would explain the delay on the physical Switch version. I mean, why bother releasing a game physically when you plan to entirely replace the code base in a couple of months?

Because they have been the roadblock on Rocket League. Sony doesn't want cross platform with Xbox. That much is clear.

I think they originally wanted to push cross-play as an idea only they were doing/would do, but then MS came along and did and it doesn't seem like Sony's interested in cross-play anymore.

What's crazy about Rocket League is you have cross-play between PS4 and PC, and Xbox, W10 Store and PC, but not Xbox and PS4.
