Minecraft CEO confirms Xbox Live login on Switch, really wants Sony cross-play.

Makes sense. Microsoft is hosting the servers, so they have one unified account system that everyone signs in to. It's free asswell

Well whatever... it's Sonys choice. But now they have one of the the worst possible versions of minecraft on their system

Pretty sure Sony has some games with cross-platform play with PC?

Yes. Unreal Tournament was one of the first games, if not the first game, to be crossplatform play between PlayStation and PC. More followed with it.

That doesn't mean Microsoft doesn't deserve credit. They did it with Shadowrun, and only Shadowrun. MS was told to do this with Unreal Tournament and the excuse was that console gamers are getting destroyed by KB/M players.

Sony have been refusing cross platform play for a while, I thought it was common knowledge. Many devs would have made their games have it if it weren't for Sony refusing.

Sometimes it blocks an entire game coming to the system, like FFXIV.

Is this a weird joke I'm not getting? FFXIV didn't come out on xbox because of xbox live policy. FFXIV:ARR came out on PS4 and PC with crossplay between the two. Rocket league also has PC and PS4 crossplay. They are reluctant to make the deal for XBox and PS crossplay for whatever reason though. I assume because they have a big userbase and don't want to agree to some terms for connecting to XBL.

As far as I know you don't need to link an EA/Uplay account to play those games online on Sony hardware. You do on the PC (where you also need to install their respective launchers) but I've never been prompted to do so on the PS4 or Xbox One.

You don't need an MS account to play Minecraft online on non-MS platforms either. It's primarily required for crossplay purposes.

Mobile versions (iOS, Android, Amazon, Windows Phone) feature XBL connectivity and even feature Xbox achievements.

If the Switch version includes Xbox achievements as well, this is going to be pretty weird.

I'm interested if this integration on the switch version needs Xbox Live gold to make that jump to the xbox servers.

There are no xbox servers and no gold

You can connect to private servers, realms (paid servers for a few people) or massive curated servers or to just each other

This version of gold has peoples xbox live tags come through for cross platform play

Not that dissimilar to uplay on some games

You sign up for dumb ass non PSN accounts all of the time with MMO's and free to play games. What is the issue?

The difference is Microsoft

Yes but they are not direct competitors in the console hardware space (Ubisoft, EA account). I mean looking at it in reverse, would MS allow their users to go log-in to PSN? I would doubt that very much.

Microsoft didn't have to bring the game to Playstation at all. What kind of world is this where people are disgusted with using a Microsoft account but yet want to play a Microsoft game? Doesn't make sense.

If Sony were to bring their games to other consoles I doubt very seriously anyone would care about creating a Sony account to Crossplay online.

Hearing this, I could see why Sony has reservations. Think about booting up Minecraft on your PS4 and being force to make an xbox live account to play online.

Most casual consumers would be like, "what the fuck? this isn't an xbox"

You definitely need an EA Account. At least for FIFA. Pretty sure Battlefield is the same too (battlelog)

XBL accounts are really just MS accounts... and i believe they are around or maybe higher than a billion users.

They don't need any bolstering of any kind.

Yes you do. You probably forgot the first time you had to use those accounts. I remember having to link uplay and EA before touching online many years ago.

I've had to link my XBL and PSN to both EA and uPlay before

Strange... I have on both.

Ah ok, I stand corrected then. I probably did it so long ago that i forgot it ever happened.

Which makes all of this all the more stupid since the linking of accounts seems to be a one and done affair.

I would assume a lot of PS4 players already have Microsoft accounts.

Are you on Windows 10? If so you already basically have a Live account.

They will allow those "free subs" because they will make the money back they would usually get for a sub tenfold with Minecraft micro transactions.

No I don't have a PC currently and my mobile devices are Apple, I don't play Minecraft on mobile.

As a parent I do have potential issues with not being able to report players who may create inappropriate situations while my kids are playing a game like Minecraft. I'm sure MS will do something but I'd like to know what it is.

I don't know if anyone who thinks of Minecraft as a Microsoft game, it exsisted and built the vast majority of its fanbase long before the MS buyout.

And can you imagine if MS didn't include the game for only Playstation users? Holy hell!?!

So kinda like...

Xbox/Switch/PC serves and PS4/PC servers? Tbh, I think with Square Enix they let you log into your account from any suuported platform, so I'm not sure that's what they want.

Haven't played in a while, but after you select a server, I believe you have to pay to leave your server and go to a different one with different players. This would make it easier to have established servers like you said with Xbox/Switch/PC and PS4/PC. At least that's what I think and should make it possible for FFXIV on both Xbox One and Switch.

It's Xbox
The competitor and a competitive brand

That's their business reasons, but Microsoft also has several understandable business reasons to not support Minecraft on Playstation on this terms

This may be where that rumor came from! The rumor that everyone laughed off last won't yet that Nintendo was considering allowing Live to be the online service.

I truly wish Live was the online service for all the platforms. The one thing MS gets right is Xbox Live.

Wow, so people will have to make an XBL account to play on Switch?

Does that mean they can count Switch players will towards xbox 'MAU's? No wonder they want PS4 players on there

All MAU can do is indicate how many users have accessed Xbox Live in a given month. It's pretty wobbly as a metric of engagement eg - a user simply a logs in and logs out, is obviously not engaging much at all. It's a terrible metric for almost anything else. As such bystanders and investors obviously need to understand what the metric is.

If engagement is what you want to understand, concurrent users is where it's at for a given service, game etc, where you understand the literal engagement at any given time.

Naturally, no one wants to talk when it's bad and everyone wants to talk when it's good - same as units sold. This is where MAU can be marketed

It is, you don't have to sign in to your Microsoft account every time you boot up minecraft

So, the MAUs numbers are going to grow even more because some Switch owners... Damnn thats a smart move from Microsoft.

And it will also grow the Japanese MAUs as well with all the Switch Minecraft users there, then MS can finally report a substatial growth in Japan, lol.

makes sense. I only have been prompted once for each publisher (I only remember because it was a pain in the ass to remember my EA acct)

Ok but what about Switch to PS4?

Or does everyone have to go though Live as far as Minecraft is concerned?

And is this also the case for Rocket League?

There has to be a central service for xplay to work. The obvious one for minecraft is xbl because the game is run by MS.

Rocket league uses psyonics own proprietary service. Xbox live connects to it just as PSN and steam do.

you can use Windows 10 without an Microsoft account
and even an Microsoft account is not an Live account until you add a gamertag, play a Xbox Live game or use the Xbox app
but yeah. you basically "have" one if you have a Microsoft account

Actually curious because I don't play these games.

Does rocket league make you log in to some general account? Does SF5 make you create and log into a capcom account?

I can't speak for SF5, but Rocket League doesn't allow you to play cross-platform with friends, just matchmaking with randomers.

In order to implement a proper cross-platform solution that allows you to play with your friends, regardless of device, there has to be some kind of central account which manages your friends list. Given that this is a Microsoft game, it's natural that it uses Microsoft's existing account system.

Alot of GAF players sure. But I know a ton of friends who only have one console this gen (be it xbox or ps4)

It's not about having one console. It's about having a Microsoft account, which you also would likely have through Windows 10 or Hotmail.

Would it be that bad tho? You already create automatic accounts for every Ubisoft, EA, Activision/Blizzard etc game that you play on your PS4. Most people would mostly think "Okay now I´ve a MS account to play MS games"

MS wanting their competitor's customers to sign into their own network, deserves credit?

Lol.
