So about Pauline

Pauline is Mario's side chick for real
She's his ex that he just ran into and found out she became crazy successful and driven without him.

"Oh yeah, I'm seeing someone now. Her name is Peach. She's awesome, she's like a princess of her own kingdom. It's going great, really great."

"That's nice. So where is she now?"

"Kidnapped... again. It happens a lot. Guess I've got a type, y'know? Heh heh...

...

The other day I saw her texting someone a lot. Like constantly. I asked her who she was talking to and she said Daisy, but... She was texting a lot. Sometimes in the middle of the night when she thinks I'm not awake. So... So I looked at her phone when she wasn't looking. I know I shouldn't have, but... She had a bunch of pictures of herself. The kinda pictures you would send to your boyfriend or whatever. But... I'd never seen any of these before. And that's when another text came in. The name just said 'B Man'. I didn't open it, but the preview I saw it said 'Wishing you were here' with a winky face.

Pauline... I don't think she's kidnapped. I think she's fucking him."

I think it's easier to think of Mario characters as animated actors. Kinda like Disney's House of Mouse or Tezuka's recycling of characters where everyone exists but with small differences to fit the narrative.

That's pretty much how Miyamoto sees them. Dan Ryckert has repeatedly told the story of when he interviewed Miyamoto, and he said he sees the characters in Mario games as if they're actors or characters in a performance, like old cartoons where same characters would fit different roles for whatever show was being done.

I mean she was still a distressed damsel recently in most Mario vs. DK games.

Just a random thought:

The "Bros"(or not?) vs the "Princesses"(+Mayor)
P1: Mario is pretty equivalent to Peach. (Mains)
P2: Luigi is actually closer to Rosalina than Daisy (Taller, thinner, greener).
P3: Wario...maybe closer to Daisy? (more personality, comedic versions of the "main")
P4: And....Waluigi, like Pauline, is the tallest and most distinct of their 'four'?

Not saying these would be pairings...(Though having Daisy show up in a Wario game as a "down on her luck princess" would be pretty fun. She's kind of been outranked by Rosalina as of 3D World...)

She was actually asking if Mario could grab her hat, purse, and umbrella.

You listed Rosalina twice and didn't include Pauline.

But Daisy appearing in a Wario game would be great, imo.

True, though a lot of that would have happened before Galaxy. I also assumed Galaxy's reset mostly just stopped the whole cataclysm from happening and kept everything generally the same. Basically just a reset to before Galaxy happened, with all prior events the same. Though a "streamlining" of past events would certainly be interesting (basically a comics-style retcon).

Ah, that probably makes more sense. As a big DC fan, timeline reboots and such are things I actually like to talk about, so I guess I let that seep into this, lol.

Oops. Fixed. Meant to place Pauline in "P4 slot". Had a long day at work lol, thanks!

(I think she feels like a waluigi equivalent, except she's the polar opposite of him in that she's a successful human being who has done everything right in her life, apparently.)

It did but... don't read too much into it.

It's only relevant for SMG2.

Wasn't that also why Miyamoto was on his "No story in Mario games" tear for a while?

Actually, I almost feel like this game is already showing that Miyamoto's relaxed that, or perhaps has handed most of the control to Koizumi. After Galaxy we had a line of very sterile Mario games with the NSMB games and the 3D Land/World games. Couldn't even get anything beyond a Toad for 4 player games. Now we've got Pauline and possibly DK in a mainline Mario game, as well as a number of other new character types.

(Still waitin' for that Mario & Luigi & Wario & Waluigi RPG game though)

After Odyssey, I wouldn't mind them doing a sequel to 3D World in terms of gameplay. Feature Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Rosalina, Wario, DK, Yoshi and Pauline as playable characters

Until now, I hadn't realized that the Mario Universe is mostly a matriarchy. Most of the heads of state/those with political power are women. Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, and now Pauline. Bowser is, to my knowledge, the only male to command any political authority.

That's oddly progressive when you consider this series is also mostly about saving these same women.

Edit: Well the Mushroom Kingdom had a king, but we rarely if ever see him. We can safely assume Peach usurped him and assumed power.

After their breakup Pauline put herself together and moved up in the political world, working her way up to the mayor of the largest city in the world.

Meanwhile Mario can't let his next girl go and is chasing after her wedding party in a vain attempt to stop it.

Mario, what are you doing with your life.

Best Canon.

Mario lore got deep while I wasn't watching... last thing I remember was throwhing a barrel at a gorilla, was enough to make me happy.

Now it's a Scorsese movie!
Will Candy Kong murder Pauline to win back Donkey Kongs heart?

It's just set dressing, though. You never get to see them do Princess things™ so their stations don't count for much (outside of getting kidnapped*, lol). That's why Pauline being the freaking mayor is actually pretty awesome, since she's not just a reward for Mario anymore ; they actually let her do things now.

*Rosalina being the exception, obviously

Used to be called Big Ape City though.

See, I always figured this is the city that not only Donkey Kong takes place, but Wrecking Crew, and the original Mario Bros (which would technically be under this city, in the sewers). Even though it's now New Donk City, I still think the same thing. Wonder if Foreman Spike is somewhere around, or if there's still Shellcreepers, Sidesteppers, and Fighter Flys in the sewers of New Donk City.

Like the callback, nonetheless. This is part of what I had for a "Super Mario Universe" game, which basically linked all the "worlds" seen in previous Mario (and Mario-related games). That city was one of the worlds, as was SMB2's Subcon, SMB3's "other kingdoms", SMW's Dinosaur Land and SML's Sarasaland.

Speaking of the Mushroom King, he and Toadsworth have both been said to be Peach's father, and yet no mention of a mother.

Peach has two dads.

I think there were moments of diplomacy and court-y duties in SMB3

Other than that, "GET BACK TO THE KITCHEN TO BAKE ME A CAKE, PEACH" - Miyamoto on gender roles

When are they gonna bring back the kings?? (I guess it's a little different from mario 1 that you're saving 7 kings and peach is your support commander, and she doesn't get kidnapped until after world 7, and then her rescue dialog makes fun of the first game a little)

Pauline really looks out of place in the Marioverse imo. She doesn't look as cartoony as Mario and Peach but doesn't look realistic like the New Donk City residents.

Pauline seems to be taking the role Rosalina had in Galaxy.

Meaning I doubt Rosalina will be in the base game, unfortunately. Though if they do DLC a Kingdom set in space would be perfect.

You can either be a damsel in distress or have a career. Unfortunately, despite what society often tells videogame women, you can't have both. I admire Pauline's dedication to her career in politics these last 35 years.

Again tho, Galaxy reset the timeline.

It's entirely possible that the entire timeline was pushed forward a great number of years and the events were completely different. Maybe Cranky Kong was never involved with Mario or Pauline, and it was the current DK that did it, before learning his lesson and chilling at the jungle. Or maybe Mario and Pauline were like 10 or 12 years old in this timeline's version of those events.

(I feel like we're putting too much thought into this, but that's probably why I'm enjoying this so much).

Its like the new 52 in batman its not canon unless referenced

Deepest lore question: So Mario and Luigi were described as NY Italian Plumber which is now New Donk City. Will we see the Italian based kingdom? Will all of the characters look similar to Mario and Luigi?

So a question for those more familiar with Mario deep lore: If he did marry Peach, would that make him King of the Mushroom kingdom, with actual powers as supreme monarch, or simply Prince consort? Then again, neither Peach is queen, so I guess that would only come up once the current ruler kicks the bucket.

But Peach still can't save her own ass

Is Bowser actually romantically attracted to her? 'Cause EWWW

I fucking love it.

Whether it is movies, wrestling, Mario, or any other form of fiction, I love it when a form of fiction has a callback/connection to its own history.

Plus, I'm absolutely in love with "Let's do the Odyssey" theme, which is sung by Pauline. Like, I love me some orchestra music, as Galaxy 2 is seriously my favorite game of all-time, not the least of which is a credit to the excellent soundtrack of Galaxy 2, but the main theme from Odyssey is even better.
