Nintendo owns more valuable IP and is leveraging it far better than Sony is
Don't worry, they got the Emoji movie coming.
lol

the ball is in sony's court now
microsoft deserves more flak for letting this happen.
I bet it's their pride more than anything that's holding it backGive us crossplay Sony.
Tear down this wall.
I see this as a disaster for Sony, their investors will not be happy triggering further loses
Stock market loves video game companies. Just completely sky high valuations.
I guess Sony should stop doing so much. So little reward for so much effort.
They're still making TV's that nobody buys IIRC, and it's quite frankly remarkable that they can still be the tip of the spear in the likes of console VR when they're struggling so badly
Didn't we have posts in the last quarter or financial year saying PSN alone made more money than the whole of Nintendo?
I'm not a business guy but I'm pretty sure Sony makes a lot more money.

3DS is the only platform that grew year-over-year last year. They have recently sold over 15 million copies of Pokémon, and there's another coming in November. Not to mention they just announced a new model. There's a lot going on and worth taking into account. The 3DS and PS4 are in no way comparable. One is significantly more lucrative than the other, and if that isn't the case that's a big problem
Wait, so they're trailing Sony but worth more?
Excuse my ignorance.
They make more than a billion a year from toy licenses, why would they sell the ip for hundreds of millions only?Speaking of valuable IP, how much do you reckon the Pokemon IP would fetch on an open market? Hundreds of millions?
If Playstation was a separate company the PS3 would have shuttered them. they clawed it back to an estimated net $4-5 billion loss, but early on they were maybe even double that in the red. Same goes for Xbox. Sony/MS being huge companies with deep pockets and borrowing capacity were the only things that enabled them to be around at all.I'm curious how much PlayStation would be worth if they were a separate company.
Or Sony with just their video game and camera business as those seem to be the most profitable.
They have such good phones, I still don't know why they don't sell well.
I asked this before so apologies, but do you think the movie division should go?
I'm absolutely astonished at some of the posts in this thread lol. Definitely a video game enthusiast forum and not a business one.
I get what you mean but they do not "make more" though, market cap is something else, I believe it's the perceived value of the company's shares.
In terms of operating income for example, last fiscal year was 288,7 billion yen for Sony Corp (135,6 billion yen for PlayStation) and 29,3 billion yen for Nintendo.
Didn't this already happen like several times over the past couple of years?

Because Spider-man is still a cash cow for them.I remember there was a rumor a couple of years ago that Disney was angling to buy their movie division. IDK why Sony hasn't sold it off.

Finally, I can't wait to take The Last of Us Part II Switch Edition with me on my train rides! This shows why Sony should go third party
gtfo with that scum
I think that's inaccurate. PS4 shipment grew too, from 17.7M for FY2015 to 20M FY2016.3DS is the only platform that grew year-over-year last year. And Sony's Playstation division isn't video game company enough?
Okay to be fair, their evaluation would probably sky rocket if they sold of their incompetent film and mobile divisions.
Tesla's market cap is higher than GM's as well.
based on this, Nintendo has more money

Don't know much about market cap and all that, though didn't Sony make more from their network services in one quarter than Nintendo made the whole year?
Yeah they did: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-04-28-sonys-psn-is-making-more-money-than-all-of-nintendo so not sure how or what this all correlates to.
Is it market worth/value or how exactly?
You should buy Sony stock if you think so strongly about it. You'll make big bucks. I know I saw Nintendo's position and decided to buy a couple of shares and now I'm getting free lunches every day.Sony is forecasting a profit of 4.5 billion for the next year, thats the highest in 20 years..I am sure the market cap will surpass nintendos by then.
Let's not frame it as Sony stock being some kind of loser.
Think of it like Kickstarter, and that the buyers see value in Nintendo that their Kickstarter is worth as much as Sony's in the money that was raised.
It's not the money Nintendo has made, it's the money that investors have put into the company.
