Box Office: 'Wonder Woman' Holding Better Than Any Superhero Movie in 15 Years

Link.

Word of mouth is a wondrous thing.

Look no further than Warner Bros. and DC's Wonder Woman. The summer blockbuster boasts the best hold of any superhero film in more than 15 years at the North American box office, where even the most successful summer tentpoles can catch a case of sunstroke and retreat to the shade rather quickly amid so much competition. Wonder Woman is the unusual exception.

Directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman is still going strong as it heads into its seventh week. The movie, grossing $371.3 million through Tuesday, is now assured of topping out at $390 million or more domestically, becoming the No. 8 comic book adaptation of all time, not accounting for inflation. And it will soon pass up Disney and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($385.8 million) in North America to become the top summer earner.

That also means Wonder Woman will earn roughly 3.8 times the $103.3 million it collected when it launched over the June 2-4 weekend — the best multiple for the genre in decades. Currently, the film's multiple is 3.6, slightly ahead of the first Spider-Man in 2002. The first Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) was also a word-of-mouth sensation, sporting a 3.5 multiple, while Nolan's sequel, The Dark Knight (2008), powered to a 3.4 multiple.

Generally speaking, a multiple in the vicinity of 2.5 to 3 is considered a win for a superhero film, particularly if the opening is especially mighty, i.e., north of $120 million.

"It feels like Wonder Woman will play all the way through August," says Warners' Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution. "Right now, the movie is still in about 3,000 locations. Usually, the theater count would be a fraction of that at this point."

The critically acclaimed film is also destined to become the studio's third-biggest movie domestically after The Dark Knight ($534.9 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($448.1 million), again not accounting for inflation. It is about to pass up the final Harry Potter film ($381 million) after eclipsing American Sniper ($350.1 million) and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($330.4 million).

Globally, Wonder Woman has already become the top-grossing film of all time from a female helmer with solo directing duties. Still, overseas, Wonder Woman has been slower to catch on, earning roughly $380 million to date for a global total of around $750 million. Many times, the foreign box office accounts for 70 percent of a tentpole's total gross; Wonder Woman's split is currently 49 percent domestic and 51 percent international.

Earlier this week, Ryan Reynolds and the team behind 20th Century Fox's superhero sensation Deadpool generously tweeted a congratulatory note after Wonder Woman passed up Deadpool, which posted a domestic total of $363.1 million in early 2016. Reynolds' is among many who are happy to sing Wonder Woman's praises.

"When critics and audiences are on the same page, you can pretty much bet the box office will be supercharged for the long haul," says box-office analyst Jeff Bock. "Wonder Woman is also a vehicle of female empowerment, something we don't regularly see in the superhero genre, and that has made it a very unique property this summer."

She has legs for days~

Deserved. Didn't expect it to make my top 5 of favorite superhero films, that's for sure.

Puts a stake in the heart of the "but a woman can't headline an action/superhero movie" nonsense too

It is pretty damned crazy that we're approaching the middle of July and I can still see multiple showings of that movie, which opened the first weekend in June? Second? at my theater. And I would if I had the free time.

I'd be in the dick
Saw it twice. Second time was taking my mom. She's 62 and usually doesn't like superhero movies despite wanting to see them. She loved the movie. Was talking to all of her friends about it.

The movie is resonating with a lot of people and not just ones that follow superhero films. Glad to see it.

Seen it twice already. Love it. Hope she can still manage to carry
without Pine. Their chemistry was so on point together.

Bravo. It's about damn time. There's a good shot of it beating Spider-man Homecoming too when all is said and done.

The sequel is going to do insane numbers.

I actually think that it might do less, much like AoU failed to pass Avengers. Pop-cultural zeitgeists around movies don't come that often.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

Don't worry Hollywood will learn the wrong lesson and think only Gal Godot can headline a female super hero flick or something stupid.

Avengers had a much higher ceiling though.

"New" movie properties tend to grow a lot overseas after the first installment. I see WW2 doing over a billion easily.

Nice. Now gimme Circe and Cale in the sequel dammit. I want it yesterday.

I don't know about that...
Hollywood should have learned that fact back in the days of Alien and Aliens. They always learn the wrong lesson.
"- Hey Johnson, what if Green Lantern took place in World War 1?
-That genius, Johnson! A billion dollars garanteed!"

I think they meant "passed Deadpool". This sentence made me think of something else entirely.

Wonder Woman's run has been a fun watch, and it deserves every penny.

I think AoU made less than Avengers because it was a lesser film in nearly every regard

If a WW sequel can double down on its strengths and fix the issues of the first, namely terrible villains, it can do incredibly well.

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
doing work for the culture

can't wait for Marvel to spool up their Captain Marvel hype

they're gonna winter soldier it

it'll be huge

yeah it really depends on if the quality of the sequel. It's definitely possible but I guess I'm just a pessimist

Marvel must be thinking how to ride this WW wave with Captain Marvel. Maybe being beaten to the punch by DC was not such a bad thing.

I'm glad it's doing so well because of further reaching implications. I didn't actually really like the movie itself, sadly :/

Just got back from finally seeing it and I have absolutely no idea why. What another terrible turd from WB/DC.

Too bad it's doing as well internationally. It could probably be a billion dollar movie.

It's doing respectably internationally. Just domestic is on another level.

So you end up in a situation where, to compare it with Captain America Civil War, it gets close to the domestic gross while the international is closer to half.

Lol American Sniper making that much money. What a crock of shit that film.

As for WW, well deserved.

no way they are happy - Feige is probably still pissed at Perlmutter for sandbagging Captain Marvel for so long

having said that, this last week started the big MCU diversity year:

Spider-Man & its diverse cast
Valkyrie's introduction in Thor Ragnarok
all of Black Panther
Captain Marvel's intro in Infinity War (that they'll start hyping soon now that SMH is out)
The Wasp's big coming out party

Then my girl Diana came through and crushed the buildings. Thank you Based Patty Jenkins.

I've actually been meaning to find the time to see it again. It was just a great movie and I have a feeling it's going to age even better over time.

You mean a superhero marketed toward the majority movie audience that is women is actually doing holding steady at the box office? *gasp*

"Risky" my ass. She's fucking Wonder Woman.
