Age of Empires 4 announced, made by Relic (Dawn of War/Homeworld/Company of Heroes)

It's being made by Relic, look at the mess that's Dawn of War 3 because of e-sports, look how hard MS pushed e-sports back in E3 and think really hard what's going to happen to AoE4
They were pushing esports a bit during the AoE presentation too. I'll be surprised if there isn't an esports focus in IV.

Normally I'd be interested but seeing how much their latest output was quality-wise (CoH 2 and Dawn of War 3) I'm inclined to be skeptically pessimistic about this. I don't want esports infecting its way into the game design and I don't want barebones launch content with plans for a million faction DLC's.

FYI, the concept art in the trailer are old concept art. I clearly remember the samurai one from the cover art of Asian Dynasties.

Relic and AoE? Yes please! I'll just wait for a non Winstore version. I have faith that Relic hasnt forgotten its own old school rts roots

I am cautiously excited. I actually didn't care that much for Age of Empires 3 borrowing from the hero system in Warcraft 3. Completely turned me off.

On the other hand, we have not had an original AAA real time strategy game since Starcraft 2 wings of Liberty

( unless you would consider deserts of kharak Triple A)

Holy shit yes, it's finally back after all this time! And by Relic too, wow!!

This is the kind of thing MS need to be doing to win back their audience and build a real first party.

Very glad to see a return to RTS games, especially the Age of Empires series. However not sure what to think of Relic making this. Dawn of War 3 was just terrible with how they decided to just abandon what made the previous two games good and go in completely the wrong direction from the start.

I kind of found the entire event insulting. Age of Empires was one of the first proper games I ever played, I genuinely feel like I've grown up with the franchise and, aside from three, count them amongst my favourite games of all time. As the stream progressed on and on I just felt more sickened by Microsoft, who were ultimately responsible for killing the franchise and Ensemble Studios along with it, acting as if they've been supporting this thriving community, despite not releasing a new game in the franchise in twelve years! The sheer audacity of the whole thing was breathtaking. Shannon Loftis was at pains to say that the franchise is alive because of the fans - which is absolutely true - but it is equally true to say that the franchise is alive despite Microsoft, who have the gall to turn up here and act as if there hasn't been a twelve year gap between the release of Age of Empires III and the announcement of Age of Empires IV. Microsoft realised there was a way to get people to pay for Age of Empires again, not just twice, apparently, as they're now offering definitive editions of recently remastered games. That's the only reason any of this is happening and, frankly, that gives me no confidence in what comes next.

The presenters were, if it's even possible, more obnoxious than during yesterday's Xbox focused stream. I have no idea whether these people are genuine Age of Empires fans or not, but their enthusiasm certainly seemed faked if not absurdly exaggerated. Why the hell can't they pronounce wololo correctly? Have they never actually heard it in game? I'm no fan of Graeme Boyd but damn if he isn't made to look capable by his two colleagues that conspired to make this practically unwatchable. If it wasn't for the mini documentary videos that broke up the cringe inducing live event, I'm not sure if I could have made it to the end, even with the tantalising prospect of a new Age of Empires being announced.

We get to the end of the event and indeed it is what we've all been waiting for... but I just can't help but feel Age of Empires IV is going to be the latest in a series of abominations attached to the franchise along with Online and Castle Siege. I'm not a fan of Relic, and I'm even less a fan of Microsoft as a publisher. They managed to make an unreal mess of Halo Wars 2, despite playing it laughably safe. More than anything though, just how early is this production? What happened to Microsoft and not announcing things too early? Despite my reservations about Microsoft as a publisher, I'd feel a lot happier if this was being developed in house. Microsoft need to bolster their first party, and their record with getting third parties to develop their IPs is atrocious. Everything about this idea seems remniscent of Halo Wars 2 being given to Creative Assembly, who either didn't have any interesting ideas of what to do with it or simply weren't allowed to do anything interesting with it.

There was a part of me that felt euphoric as it became clear that Age of Empires IV was going to be announced, but the more I ponder it the more I feel like this is going to damage the franchise rather than revive it. No-one wants to be proven wrong more than me but, at the same time, I can't muster any excitement right now.

On one hand, YEEEESSS Age of Empires!

On the other NOOOOO Relic.

Maybe that's not fair I love both CoH games and DoW 1 and 2 but DoW 3 is real trash, probably the worst game i have bought this year.

Hopefully 3 was just a blip but even though i liked them I know a large portion of the community didn't like the direction even CoH 2 and DoW 2 went

One of the big worries i have for the game, other than that it's Relic making it and a potential focus on Esports, is that that i'll go for something that focuses on speed and rushing as how you're 'meant' to play it. In the previous games i used to enjoy building lots of defenses and taking my time, i really hope that's something that is possible here. It seems most recent RTS games don't really acknowledge turtling as a play-style now.

PCgamer did a great article on it a while back: http://www.pcgamer.com/the-forgotten-joys-of-turtling-in-strategy-games/

Relic used to be an amazing studio but DoW3 was a hot mess when it came out and to be honest it still is. I don't have faith that this will be any good.

The only Age of Empire I like was the first one, mainly because it only goes to the Iron Age.

I hate the new age system in the latter games. I especially hate the guns and stuff.

It seems that this one will go to the latter route. DIsappointing.

That was a bomb ass trailer. Not terribly concerned that Relic's RTSs are normally different, I'd like to think they probably understand that AoE is legendary and stick to the script for the most part.

I'm a casual fan of RTS and just glad the genre is getting semi regular releases. AoE2 was my game in elementary school until WC3 hit.

I have a strong feeling they will try to reinvent the wheel like they do with all their games when there is absolutely no need.

Loved CoH 1 pre expansion some of the most fun I've had playing a 1v1 game online. Think they went downhill after that, but still incredibility hyped for this.

I'm excited. Relic isn't bad company. Sure, DoW 3 might not have been what people expected, but it's not a bad game by any means. All of Relic's RTS have been decent to great.

To me the biggest problem with it is that Dawn of War 3 was obviously a bad idea from the start and that should have been pretty clear. Dawn of War 2, while definitely a different direction from the first game and some didn't like that, at least had a reason for going in the direction and improved in certain areas - the tactical gameplay and things like cover were different than before, but you could tell they were at least making an effort to improve upon things. DoW3 doesn't seem to have a reason for the decisions it made beyond "Esports!" and because of that doesn't live up to either of the previous games. If you like base building and large scale battles Dawn of War 1 is better, for tactical, more realistic and weighty gameplay DoW2 is better. DoW3 just falls flat in both ways because it doesn't build upon any of what made those games good individually, and neither is it a combination of the two.

Even down to the art style those chose there were signs that they didn't know what they were really doing. They said something about "It's meant to look like Tabletop 40K!", when that makes no sense as how the miniatures look is not how they look in-universe. So they decided that the best approach to representing these things was to have an abstraction of an abstraction (trying to represent the setting in-universe by representing something that represents the setting out-of-universe), ignoring the details like painter skill and real-life lighting that make the miniatures look completely different from how they're 'supposed' to be if they had those colours in-universe.

That, and the decision to make Company of Heroes 2 much faster paced with a focus on DLC-commanders and microtransactions/grinding doesn't give me too much hope for this. It's great that we're finally getting a new RTS game and an Age of Empires one at that, but with the trends in gaming that have appeared since the original games, i'm expecting something that only vaguely resembles what the series once was.

Oh baby, right into my veins. I'm really hoping that Relic doesn't get rid of the base building aspects though. That was always my favorite part of RTS. I love to turtle, build a massive army, then throw it at the enemy.

Your days as the biggest esport are numbered, DOTA.

Dota has never been the biggest esport tho

If only the masses knew that they turned a beloved RTS genre title in dawn of war into a giant casual moba with extra rts elements thrown in.

So why did they shut down ensemble studios again?

I recall reading that the studio costs were too high for what they were generating. I recall reading that lots of the programers had very high salaries. Don't know how much of that is true, but it kinda make sense for me, specially for how AOE III was viewed.

Best post I've read in awhile.

Holy shit, RTS lives on

As a big AOE3 fan, I can't wait to see what relic pulls off with their Company of heroes pedigree behind them

The good news is that it's very apparent that Microsoft sees aoe 2 as the best game in the franchise.

hopefully this turns out well.
