YouTube has a new logo, redesigned desktop and mobile app

Also on the subject of the logo, yeah I agree with this person:
Has less character. Screws with the pleasing balance of black, red, and white. Makes the text look too heavy.

It's bad. Not as bad as many modern logo changes, but a definite downgrade.
The bold text distracts way too much. My eyes get drawn right to it when I should be looking at the content. They could just drop the text completely and it would be better than this. The old one was better than this.

Does the mobile app have a landscape UI yet? I fucking hate that I need to rotate my phone (A large 5.5" screen) to navigate then rotate it back to watch. Just let me put the phone lying down widescreen and keep it like that. The navigation UIs for their mobile and TV apps are really really bad. It's so clunky and cumbersome to navigate long lists of videos or subcriptions. On the desktop, that stuff is in a grid. Grids can be navigated faster since you can not only move horizontally to go forward and backward in time, but vertically to skip forward by ~5 videos at a time. Makes finding stuff much easier. But on the mobile app, all the videos are one long continuous list. On the TV app it's also one continuous list. Wanna find something posted 3 days ago? Have fun scrolling for a while. Come on, YouTube. Put grids on the mobile and TV apps. At least the TV app.

Hire me, I'll make the UI more usable.

The only saving grace is that I can link my laptop browser to my TV and use the computer to find the video then send it to the TV. But I shouldn't have to do that.

I wish the iOS app allowed PiP. Twitch app has this feature and it's awesome.
Sign up for YouTube Red Premium Plus Prime and you might be able to use a default OS feature that Google deliberately went out of their way to disable in their app!

Looks like they finally gave back some the real estate on the right side of the page when you search. There was almost no spot you could middle click on the page to scroll without accidentally opening a video you had no interest in watching.

I'm a Red member already! I don't believe the PiP is int he app or maybe this update will work. I'll check after I update.

(I was being sarcastic, sorry if I got your hopes up lol. It's just unbelievable they locked background playback behind a paywall so I wouldn't be surprised if PiP was another paid feature at some point however.)

So... now how do I update Youtube Center on Safari? I need to disable the black background you have when you watch videos in a large size.

Yea, I'm just happy I get no ads on mobile cuz I watch most YT there now. The ads from some of my fave channels were becoming ridiculous. Gotta make money.

The annoying thing about YouTube is the lack of picture in picture support for ios and why the hell is dark mode not a thing, i found a way to activate it through developer tools but shit like this should be standard.

it was right there.

Deleting every vertical video on the site would have been a better option. Unless you're an alien with one eye on top of the other.

Yeah this shit is terrible. Although I guess everything about the app has always clashed with iOS. From the fonts to the animations to the UI elements like the toggles and back arrows. Nothing in google apps seem to work the way you expect an iOS app to work

If your recording with your phone camera it is. And phone cameras are likely the most common recording device these days.

Why not have those videos shown how they were recorded?

Read what I was responding to (and had bolded) .
They stated if the action that was being recorded was a vertical action, aka, something that arguably makes sense for recording vertically.
Most aren't.

I'm fine with the app showing the videos more suited to how they were recorded though. Less space wasted.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
Only if TV companies start making it easy to turn my TV sideways.

Why do people equate short videos of people's lives to shooting movies or TV?

It's fine that the two orientations complement the different subject matters.

Moaning about it is just 'old man shouts at cloud'.

As a side note, they redesigned their tv/console app and it's hot garbage. There's no way to log in to a sub account on it - it's literally not possible when it was possible in the last version.

What do you mean by sub account though? I was able to switch between all of my different accounts.

Edit: Nevermind. You were talking about the TV/Console App. My mistake.

I wish background playing wasn't relegated to YouTube red. Sucks

When YouTube was a default app back in the early days of iOS it was free. Kinda impressive that Apple lets them get away with charging for a default feature of iOS. Guess they don't have a choice. Android users would be SOL either way though I suppose.
