Sea of Thieves will launch with an optional 540p mode and 15fps lock

Man, I've been on Gaf since 2013, but this thread is one of the absolute weirdest ones I've ever read, and I've seen some fucking strange ones.

I just don't know how someone who even just read the thread title and not the whole quote or article can think this is a joke, weird, a waste of time, etc.

I am shocked how more game developers DON'T include dumpster fire resolutions or graphics OPTIONS. That's the key word here folks, OPTION. You do not have to play with N64 graphics if you don't want to. However, some people with awful computers would love to have these graphics settings. You would figure the amount spent on developing those options would be offset by the larger number of people with shitty computers or laptops who now are able to purchase the game and play it.

Someone pages back were saying that people with poor computers do not buy games so it would be a waste. No shit Sherlock they don't buy games. I just assume that my Surface 3 will not be able to run anything new so I don't bother. I play Viscera Cleanup Detail on it. It runs like dogshit on it but I can still enjoy it because it's my only way to play it. I wish I was able to make it look even worse so it would run smoother. Unfortunately, it's not available on console and I can't afford to get a decent gaming rig like I used to have. I imagine I'm not the only one in this situation.

Can you picture some kid hearing others talking about how great PUBG is or watching people play on Twitch only to buy it (or have their parents buy it) and realize it won't run on the family's crappy Dell computer or not buy it at all because of that? That's probably a fair amount of people. With Microsoft clearly pushing this to be the next popular GaaS/streaming/Twitch game, they want to pick up those sales.

It's also not like this is ruining your chance to play the game in 4K, 60 FPS. You PC with 2 Titan X's will make the game look amazing, it's just now people with toasters for computers will be able to enjoy the game too. It's clear MS is wanting this to be a huge, successful game and want anybody with an Xbox or PC to be able to play. I don't see how this can be seen as silly or a waste.

Sorry for the rant but god damn people use your brain. Whew!

The part where people suggested this was just a ploy to grab some attention was the mind blowing part. Unless I'm missing something, I just can't see why that would be your reasoning for Rare including this option.
Weird indeed.

Human eyes can't see more than 12 frame per second anyway, so it's fine.

Seriously speaking, if they were doing some sort of N64 mode would have been a cool thing, but this is pretty random, so I don't understand what the hell were they thinking. Also, if the base game will drop to 15fps in some moments on regular X1 this will turn against them pretty badly.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.

I really don't understand how people are coming to these sorts of conclusions. I feel like I'm going mad.

Rare had PC users who sign up for the Insider program send in their DxDiag. Maybe they saw a ton of PC players who were running this tier of rig. Why not let more users experience your game?

Well, good news for Xbox One owners is that the game, even in alpha state, runs pretty smoothly and this FPS lock is only for people will super low-end PCs.

Jeeze people, think about this for more than one millisecond before throwing up your hands in confusion.

What are you even talking about? This has nothing to do with xb1...

This is about giving people with shitty computers a way to play the game...

That's pretty cool. Not something I'd ever use myself but I'm sure there are plenty of players with very low-spec hardware that will like this optional mode.

huh.

Neat.

This is suddenly the most interesting thing about this game to me lol. I really would like to try that mode. Cool of them to even spend a minute thinking about this, much less implementing it.

Are all UWP games resolution scaled? Or have I imagined that?
They are indeed! They run at your desktop resolution and rely on scaling when dropping the resolution (unless something has changed since I last played a UWP game, at least).

You are. This is not a thread. This is a fever dream brought upon you by bad secret sauce on that burger you ate the other night. There is no other reasonable explanation ....

In the real world, I'm happy to see a game with a 540p option. I do PC stuff on an aging gaming laptop, and I find myself having to choose between native resolution and stable 30fps, or blurry resolution and stable 60fps in a lot of newer games. I would love to be able to choose a chunky yet crisp and responsive 540p/60fps, especially for multiplayer games.

Developer gives you options. Some find a way to see it as a negative and cry for attention. Sad to see things affiliated with Microsoft catch so much flack from folks who love to play games.

How are you supposed take crossplay seriously when these filthy pc pirates are running around pillaging other players in this 540p mode? They already have a huge advantage with their m+kb setups.

what is shocking about the resolution options? there are new games that still give 640x480 as option...
Who uses that for today's games though on widescreen monitors?=O Plus 540p isn't a common res for PC as well so I'm surprised that would be an option.

15fps lock? Can someone please tell me why they spent any dev time at all to implement this? Even if it was 10 minutes, why?

I was incredibly confused about this until I realized that these probably aren't Xbox options.

Unless they are.

Then I'm back to being confused.

540p, whatever.

15fps? This is a ship game, right? Having to turn big ships and fire accurately at that low framerate seems like it'd be a shitty experience.

So people with super low end hardware can enjoy the game, too as it would be unplayable otherwise in a sub 10 fps non fixed diashow?

Semms like 10 minutes well spend.
Or what would you have that 10 minutes rather spend on?

"But can it run doom?"

Sea of Thieves..."Hold me Grog."

;)
Great post, man

Right? I was thinking although it's cool they support low-end PCs this way, it's still to be seen how well the game actually plays at this setting. What the game can do and should do are two different things.

i don't understand the response about how this is good for people with bad spec PCs...did PC games ever stop including the option to run at low res/low detail? i'll be honest i haven't had to worry about things like that since i was a kid so i am checking my privilege but i didn't think being able to put the game on a really low resolution and level of detail was a "feature" but more a standard part of a PC game. did i get old and things changed gaf?

I don't think it's necessary and can't understand why, but for some reason I need to see this running. Gifs please!

Framerate lock beyond V-sync to your monitor's refresh rate isn't commonly available.

Is it really so fucking hard to understand that 540p is an uncommon, usually unsupported resolution on PC? And that it's a super low resolution that is still 16:9? So it's useful for people with super bad hardware.

About the 15 FPS lock, that seems a bit more weird, a 20 FPS lock would make more sense I think

Lots of games ship with highly customizable resolutions. A few even ship with sliders that let you lock the frame rate to any value.

But specifically calling out your 540p option and 15fps lock is weird...

This is honestly just embarrassing for them.

Like honestly the amount of feedback you take in and this is the one you make an announcement on?

Well, I dunno. They've been talking about and announcing many things about the game over the past year or so. It's just that nobody ever seems to care and the threads never even reach two pages. But once something that can be turned into negative news comes out, the thread reaches 13 pages.

Announcement?

More like an interview and "hey, we can do this for players" and it was reported on?

Total embarrassment. These guys should be ashamed of themselves.

It wasnt even an announcement... It was a candid response to a question about hardware requirements.

I really doubt they are embarrassed. The people making it seem like having this option is harmful, don't care about the game. To people that are interested in the game, this is either good news, or at worst, insignificant.
