Nintendo details how physical games bigger than 32GB will work on Switch

Well, I knew it was going to be sooner or later that I would have to buy a MicroSD. May as well be now. I'm still getting physical but with that download, I'll need to expand my memory. Luckily it seems I can get a 64GB card for about $25 bucks.

Yeah that makes sense, it's what I assumed they'd do with big third party stuff. Plenty of games are over 32GB at this point

This is the cheapest option for them and it's not like people aren't accustomed to having to download content for games nowadays. Not saying I like it, but I get it.
It does make the internal storage on the switch look really bad though (just like the 500GB on PS4s & Ones I guess)

Nintendo did do this with Xenxoblade X. The texture packs and the like were separate downloads because it couldn't all fit on the disc. I expect something similar for XBC 2.

Although it's a bit annoying, It's nothing different than what we get with the standalone boxes these days anyway.

I wouldn't call a 1 time Download halfway to always online, that's a bit of a stretch there.

i dont want to have to be required to be online to just activate my games for playability, its still in that trajectory

Im guessing folks own more than one game. Switch doesn't have enough memory for current gaming standards and requiring switch owners to have to buy extra memory on top of games because of that in 2017 is questionable at best. For a home console.

Then do like you do on your PS4 and Xbox one when your space fills up, delete your games, those games rather your digital or physical have mandatory installs, you either delete your games or upgrade your memory, I see no difference here, Xbox one and PS4 games are huge, most Switch games are small.

It's not an ideal situation but, let's be frank, sd cards are pretty damned cheap. When I bought my Switch I sprang for a 128Gb one and I can't imagine it was more than $40 USD. Of course, that could be a huge amount for some folks.

Has Nintendo said anything about supporting a 400Gb card?

Didn't Square Enix already use a larger cart for DQH 1+2?

So 2K are just a bunch of cheap bastards then.

Dragon Quest Heroes are 2 games priced at >90 USD. Not comparable.

You just won't see many 32G card games cos the price is really expensive AFAIK

You're going to burn through that pretty quickly if you buy third party games. Nintendo has done a fantastic job at keeping game sizes very low but third parties aren't going to try like that. They've already got carte blanche when it comes to space on PS4 and Xbone. And now that this is an option, I expect a lot of developers will aim for the smallest cart possible and lean on the SD card option. Add patches into the mix and we're in for a ride.

I've got a 200GB card in my Switch. That'll last me for a while but I think I'll probably need to upgrade in a few years.

Why is it that that all my ps4 games are 40GB +

Yet Nintendo manages to have big games like splatoon, Mario kart, heck even breath of the wild with barely any GB. Under 15 GB usually

How does that work?

An NBA game is not bigger in scale than breath of the wild, is it?

Those games you mention have barely any voice audio and pre-rendered cutscenes. That's the difference. Video and audio take up a lot of space.

Yeah, I want a bigger card but I can't quite pull it just yet. I may have to treat it like I do with a lot of PS4 games, if I am not actively playing it, delete that shit off.

videos, high quality sound and textures

That's why Lightning Returns are much smaller in size than FFXIII.

I've had one 3DS card completely die on me regardless of system used (Tales of the Abyss) so I'm actually kinda wary of these things now.

That's dissapointing. We had the scare with the Lego city game, but I guess this one is for real.
Hope it doesn't become the norm going forward.

Because some gaffers and other switch owners play it primarily in a way that Nintendo engineered it means they should have a solution for those customers.

I'm pointing out how Nintendo doesn't have a solution for people who need more storage other than buy more storage that may need to be expanded again with your next games purchase.

Which is a major problem.

That bandage is better than what's in the OP.

This is EVERY console manufacturers' solution. If you run out of storage, you buy more.

So I read that NBA 2K18 is 25GB on Switch as pointed out by the OP that it's not bigger than 32GB.

Really sucks that they are doing this considering the shit we already went through with Lego City Undercover when it did not have cut content that required a download in the end.

Obviously the cost of 32GB game cards need to drop soon.

Edit:

Oh wait, here's a better source.

The Digital Download Is Roughly 25GB
When I spoke to Visual Concepts, they didn't have a final file size nailed down yet, but they expect it to come in around 25GB. With the constant updates the game gets over the course of the NBA season, you should budget a lot more storage space, however.

Edit:

Expect Regular Game Updates

Nintendo may have an inferior network service to Sony and Microsoft, but that isn't preventing NBA 2K18 from issuing regular game updates. Visual Concepts says the game will receive regular updates day and date with the PS4, Xbox One, and PC versions. This means whenever they push new MyTeam cards, roster updates, gameplay changes, and the like, Switch owners won't be left on the outside looking in. If other publishers are able to follow suit, this could prove a watershed moment for Nintendo's post-launch support.

Retail Copy Details

The retail version of NBA 2K18 does not release day and date with the digital version on September 19. If you want the cartridge, you have to wait until October 17.

No mention in the article if the full game is in the game card.

Why is there even a delay for the physical version if it isn't using the whole card? I don't know what's been confirmed so far.

Wait , Vita games did that? I'm mostly digital on mine.

what game does that?

Lol whoops, sorry guys I forgot about this thread.

To answer your questions the game is kinda niche.

SDGundam-2.jpg

SD Gundam G Generation Genesis came with 1 cart for installing the excess data and another cart that actually had the other half of the data and ran the game without a second install.

It came in a cool box that had the carts in two separate vita game cases inside. It was pretty neat and I'm not sure of any other vita games that did this.

Any physical release that doesn't actually include the game on the cart is useless to me. Better off just getting it digitally if it ever gets cheap or skip it.

Why are they using the DIGITAL DOWNLOAD Version of NBA 2k18 as evidence of all this? The reason it says that in the box is because it's a code in the box

Edit - just read the full article, will be interesting to see what games require a cart plus download solution.

First I thought that's pretty dumb but in the end it's standard to download tons of updates anyways day 1 so not that big of a deal. Except the PS4 and Xbone at least come with the necessary storage.

I'd imagine that Nintendo will try to get a 64GB cartridge made available to developers in the future to alleviate the issue, or at least I hope they do.
This. I'd even go as far as suggesting R&Ding 128GB carts. Surely not even a multiplat would exceed that size.

We'd need more clarification. As you mentioned, IGN are citing the digital download version box, nothing in the article has been confirmed about the physical version.

As I pointed out in my post Game Informer interviewed the developers and they want to get the game down to 25GB in size, and they confirm the physical release date but didn't say if the physical version is the same size as the digital download.

Either we have to wait for the physical release or if we could get clarification from someone at 2K.

I wonder if it would be possible to do something like put a 32 GB chip and an 8 GB chip in a single game card if say 38 GB is needed for a game.

Still something like that would probably be too expensive for most publishers and they would rather have people download the extra data.

Great, I hope we will know which games use that before the release cause I won't support this and won't buy any game that use this.

This is not the digital download version box, is it? Is there even such a SKU planned/announced? Retailers all only list a single SKU for the standard and legend editions:

http://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-switch/games/nba-2k18-legend-edition/148347

October 17 is the release of the retail edition.

You can make a 128gb card now. You can even make a 256gb one. The problem isn't tech, it's cost. It's not practical for publishers. Unless you are suggesting that Nintendo give them these options at the same cost of cards now, and eat the cost. I would love to see that. Nintendo losing money is always nice to watch.
