I'm fully on the "fuck him" train but you can somewhat excuse the lack of ability to distinguish the two forms by him being a non-native English speaker.

EDIT: JESUS CHRIST, nobody is even reading what I'm saying here. I'm not defending any of his shit. Just saying he might know not there even is a difference between the two forms as brought up above.

FUCKING CHILL

the two forms don't matter in the context he used it in

he was aiming for insult, r or no r

None, pls realize I wasn't making any larger point beyond the simple thing I said there. Fuck him

In that case it's useless semantics to question whether there's any difference between the two words. Of course people are going to call you out for bringing that up, because the only reason you would is to defend PewDiePie or for no reason at all.

Can we just stop talking about the dmca. Who the hell cares.
Probably PDP, and all of his Youtube "friend".

If the dev of Firewatch can gain enough momentum, as in more dev follow suit and DMCA'd his ass, nobody will dare associate with the fucker.

Which is a big deal because they hit where it hurt, money.

Or your know, we can just outrage and not do a damn thing.

maybe tomorrow it rains
Make sure to read what I actually said and responded to.

I'm not defending shit.
You say you're not defending anything, but you're providing an excuse for his behavior. It's similar to saying "No offense" before posting something clearly offensive.

Jesus Fucking Christ. I did not say it excuses him saying it, I said it "sort of" excuses him not knowing the difference as brought up in the post I quoted.

I AM NOT DEFENDING HIM DID YOU READ THE PART ABOUT ME SAYING I AM FULLY ON THE FUCK HIM TRAIN.

God damnit people. Read.
If you really think he doesn't know the differnce, then you're incredibly naive. I don't think you are, though. Your argument sucks.

I always see this and didn't understand this logic.

Please explain how they are different.

Nigger: A racial slur used throughout history to demean us

Nigga: A word also used to demean us, however it was also taken back to be used as we see fit

And hint, black people tend to not say nigger

Its things like this that pretty much put a early end to my online gaming. It was originally something I looked forward to. A new way to reach and play with others who have similar interests? Hell yeah!!

Then days/nights of hearing the n-word more than I ever have offline made me think that online gaming isnt for me.

I dont feel like having "thick skin" while doing a past time I enjoy, an activity I use to relax from the real world. I just want to play without the hassle. Yeah Ive had good online experiences, but sadly Ive had way more negative ones.

This. I just don't understand. I hear shit like this on a somewhat regular basis like Overwatch too.

I was playing competitive OW and one of my teammates yelled out the following after spotting that the team had a Pharah

"PHARAH! THEY GOT A NIGGER IN THE TREES! NIGGER IN THE TREES!"

Like, what? Where do you even have to be from to have made that association. What mind comes up with this.

After identifying myself as black on voice comms they (he was in a party of 2 or 3) were like "oh..." then that awkaward silence before attempting to laugh it off. His comfort zone was temporarially displaced by sudden embarrassment and shame as he thought he was protected by a team of permissive or like-minded white males as he usually is and was thrown off balance upon realization that he was not. I'm sure he continued the behavior in the games he played that followed.

This was months ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. Not all words are just words, young people.

Honestly, the lengths and creativity I see people go to in order to promote their feelings of racial superiority or otherwise outpace their insecurities at the expense of others never ceases to amaze.

Sorry, I edited my post to make it clear.

Pewdiepie should absolutely be banned from streaming, and if they can swing it, banned from posting content on Youtube too.

I think what CS is doing is bullshit and I sincerely hope it fails.
Good news! You will almost certainly get your wish. Only in this very specific case, though. Corporations will continue to use DMCA takedowns as an effective weapon to silence criticism as they always have, but PDP will in all likelihood avoid any consequences for this because he makes Youtube far too much money for them to consider actually enforcing the rules and guidelines that any normal user is subject to.

Using a racist slur doesn't make you a racist. It's a stretch, but it's possible. Context is often important but, this is someone using the term out of anger and it's being a synonym for "asshole". It's part of his developed English lexicon because he wouldn't have grown up exposed to the word via family members saying it.

If this had been once incident of PewDiePie saying something like this, I think people might be willing to see it as a mistake and accept an apology but it's not. It's not the first and it won't be the last. This isn't a kid trying to look like a big man online, this is an adult and he should be treated the same way any adult who finds Nazi jokes and racism funny. Treat them with utter contempt.

If people have to stretch so that they don't have to call you a racist, there's probably something going very wrong and you should reexamine the way you conduct your life.

Nah man. I'm swedish too and that word is known by everyone here. We have a very similar word that is the exact same thing (close at least). Pdp knew what he was saying. The only explanation is that he 1. Thinks black people are less than white, and 2. Doesn't mind proclaiming that.

My point was not to say he thought either form might be "okay" to say, just on a pure vocabulary level, my thought was that he did not know there was even two different forms with connotation differences. That is all.

Wow. That was as blatant as it gets. He blurted it out like he says this shit all the time. I didn't know how big of a deal this guy was until that South Park episode and that other controversy. Assuming (well, hoping) the kids already gave up on him and he no longer holds influence over them?

...That doesn't matter though. If he meant to use it as a slur, the pronunciation is trivial and pointless.

To all the "Im European and he didn't mean it" people: fuck you. I'm European and fuck that line of defense. There's a shitload of racism in Europe and you know what helps it thrive? All the scum always finding a way to defend it and managing to explain why racism is quantic and can never really observed.

It all works in circles. The actively violent far right groups are normalized by the semantics of far right politicians. In turn, that kind of speech is normalized by people like PDP. All these shitty youtubers are normalized by morons who see their favorite guy who talk about electronic toys under attack and need to defend their honor. Congratulations, you're part of the problem.

It's indefensible and anyone trying to downplay it should take one minute to think about what they're actively spending time and energy to do.

Oh come the hell on now.

I've explained it now like 10 times. I AM NOT DEFENDING HIS WORDS.

Done with this now.

edit:

added this to the original post now:
edit: The original comment here was a simple comment on his presumed poor vocabulary including the finer distinctions between the two terms mentioned above. The word "excuse" in the sentence seems to tick everyone off, as if I was somehow trying to excuse what he said in general which is most fucking definitely not the case, see my earlier posts in this thread for fucks sake.

To summarize:
excuse of behavior = 0
speculation about poor vocabulary = 1

That. is. all. Not stop piling onto this.

We're all on the same "fuck him" page here.

Please clarify, what is it exactly that NeoGAF should tolerate?

A European in Europe using a word that largely has a historically negative connotation only in the United States. Americans don't hold a monopoly on language, they butcher all language to overly simplify things globally.

The vast majority of you don't watch Pewdiepie, you likely all swore off him after the Nazi jokes, and likely just want to get in the mandatory "oh my god so offensive" posts. Despite the fact that people here don't follow him, this thread has been consistently bumped to the top since it was posted, where it will stay for the rest of the day. Oh no. A youtuber said a word in a PUBG stream that Americans consider naughty he is now human garbage.

Yeah ok, i was just explaining that him being swedish doesnt change anything.
And I think you made clear from your other posts that you think he is an asshole.
Also swedes do know the difference between **er and ***a

So what was the purpose of your post?

Because there's literally only one thing I can think of that could be gleaned from what you posted.

A European in Europe using a word that largely has a historically negative connotation only in the United States. Americans don't hold a monopoly on language, they butcher all language to overly simplify things globally.

Is thinking women are less intelligent than men a Swedish thing? Or could it be that the biggest Internet personality isn't some hick who has no exposure to outside culture?

PewDiePie plays with many people who are affected by that word, and that word HAS been used outside of the U.S. to be a negative term against black people. He used the word to mean asshole, and he immediately understood that it was a bad thing to have said it. Do you think he doesn't know that this word is a slur against black people?

I swear, PewDiePie could have explained the entire history of U.S. racism before using the n-word and you'd still give him the benefit of the doubt.

Which part "What a fucking nigger" demonstrates he may not know the context of two terms? When he tries to "correct" himself by substituting "asshole" instead of "nigger" what suggests he may not get the context of what he was saying.

When he says "What a fucking nigger" when he is mad at someone online what leads you to believe he doesn't catch the meaning of what he is saying?

I'm Swedish, I know.

I'm European and what the fuck are you smoking?

Re: the "Europe!" excuse.

I am willing to concede that there are pockets of non-English-speaking Europe, especially Eastern and Southern Europe, where some small minority of true idiots may not know just how offensive the use of this word is.

But literally zero people I have ever met from English-speaking Europe would be able to plead ignorance. Growing up in Ireland, an overwhelmingly white society, I can tell you that no one would use this word except as a knowing vicious slur. And I've never met anyone fluent in English--German, French, Swedish, whatever--who doesn't know this, too. Certainly no one under the age of 30 with Internet access can plead ignorance.

The only dumber excuse is drawing some sort of distinction between "n*gga" and "n*gger" that somehow makes it permissible for a white person to sling either one around--intended as an insult or not.

It's clear-cut. Not your word, in any form. Don't use it. And stop watching PewDiePie videos; he's bad for everyone's health.

Pewdiepie was terrible before all this

I mean, I dont personally think kids should be exposed to swear words as young as his fans are. But thats the world we live in where internet usage is unmonitored by parents

But yes, the racism is incredibly damaging to a child because we know that schools and parents cant break the internet culture that is teaching children unfiltered things

Its a serious concern that just doesnt get attention because of how the internet is

To be fair, I think he himself is a byproduct of the Internet, and the kids who are watching him are basically feeding off the same behaviour he himself picked up while growing up on the web.

Back then, when going through image boards and the like, it was very easy to find people treating each other on these terms. Asshole this, n word that and so on, so forth. They were absolute cesspools, and I imagine they must remain so. But then, people grow up and they start living in society and realizing that kind of behaviour is both childish and unacceptable.

That said, when you're Pewds, you don't really grow up. Despite his age and popularity, the guy still seems hell-bent on behaving like a teeanger. And he is passing down the exact same kind of content that shaped him up to become what he is today.

I don't want to say he isn't racist, because a behaviour like this would qualify as an act of racism, but I'm willing to believe that PDP wouldn't mistreat a POC in person nor does he harbor actual maliciousness towards them. Rather, I don't think he truly believes that POC are inferior to him or whatever. He uses it because it was the sort of joke he found funny when he was younger and unfortunately he didn't outgrow that phase. What he lacks, however, is empathy and a conscience to realize that even though for him this is harmless, this is a word that can and will cause hurt to a gigantic number of people given its weight and dreadful past.

As such, I am all for the guy getting called out, because if nothing else, the noise people make is another weapon in helping people realize that even this sort of behaviour is still racism, even if the perpetrator himself isn't someone who would go around beating POC on the streets or whatever. Behaviour like PDP's has been around the internet for a long while, and I'd estimate a large portion of kids who were exposed to it back then managed to fix themselves. That in an age where people were much less conscious and loud about these issues. So, the best way to fight it is indeed call him out on the BS.

Dude i am Mexican a I know that fucking word. The word itself is a variant of Spanish' "negro". Clearly that didn't matter back then and it doesn't matter now. He knows exactly what the word entails, he knows exactly how the word is used. Don't act the fool.

Also, post with your real account.
