I'd argue PewDiePie's Let's Plays are actually more transformative than a bulk of the YouTubers out there because of the character he puts on, because he really isn't "just" playing a videogame, he's actually putting on a performance, in a sense, with his character. However, I get the feeling that a lot of people in this thread won't agree with me on those sentiments.

So what happened today? Did his N-word use happen in character or out of character? Is it the persona that he's performing as that's racist, or is it himself that's racist?

Similar thing happened to me... I'm in a party chat and SPADESLAYN4LIFE comes in and literally the first word out of his mouth was the n word... So he noticed my afro samurai avatar, so he immediately leaves. So there was awkward silence and then apologies. But this still stings and its been 2 to 3 years... Because what does it also say about the others in the group if this was accepted. Complicity is acceptance and makes racist think they aren't the scum of the earth.

I know those feels. I know them well. I remember my first encounter with these types was in Perfect Dark Zero. A whole match of a guy yelling as many epithets as he could in the 10 minute match we had together. That was almost what? 15 years ago. Still remember that encounter.

That and being the spectacle, "wait black people play _______ (fill in the non-sports or CoD game on PC)??" And the game-long conversation that must now take place. It's exhausting.

I remember defending PewDiePie when he was just a really obnoxious youtube streamer. I watched a few of his videos, and besides his loud yelling and his catch phrases or whatever, I thought he was clearly just a dude who found a niche and capitalized on it. I had a certain respect for him.
