Sony X900E settings for gaming at 4k/HDR

I'm torn on what to buy. The 55XE9005 or Samsung KS7000 ( 8000 in the US ). At first I thought I wanted the Sony but I saw the Samsung yesterday at friends house and the IQ was downright amazing. I'm by no means an expert but it somehow looked brighter and the IQ seemed to pop more like the Sony. Could be my imagination though, did not see them side by side. Any thoughts?

Proper image calibration for a given environment goes a long way (unless you like every setting to mimic what is shown in stores aka vivid mode) in being the "it" factor.

Just got my TV set up today. Beautiful picture. I just got a question though. What exactly is the X-tended Dynamic Range setting? And should it be turned off or on? And if on, which one (low, medium or high)?

Is it a form of Dynamic Contrast that crushes blacks and shadow detail? Or is it a legit make the picture quality better type setting that doesn't harm the picture?

From what I can tell, it makes the colors pop more when turned on, but I'm not sure if it's crushing blacks and destroying shadow detail to get there.

This should help you out that your query:

I noticed this weird shimmering effect every so often on some textures watching SlingTV and OTA (1080p, 1080i and 720p) Turned out to be Reality Creation doing it so I've turned it off.

Were you using Auto or did you use a specific value?

I tried a few of the settings and kept seeing it every so often. Especially on zoomed up faces in 1080p. I'll try Auto again and see if it still does it if that is your recommendation.

The X-tended dynamic range is for HDR content I believe. It's recommended to turn on for HDR content (which it generally turns on automatically when an HDR signal is on), otherwise turn it off.

edit: iirc, there's some info about it in the op and the links to the Rtings settings, and AVS settings, mention to set it to high for HDR, off for SDR

TV/Movies
Picture Mode: Cinema Pro

Brightness: 10 at day/ 5 at night (You can use whatever you want here)
Contrast: 90
Gamma: 0
Black Level: 50
Black adjust: Off
Adv. contrast enhancer: Off
Auto local dimming: High
X-tended Dynamic Range: Off

Color: 50
Hue: 0
Color Temperature: Expert 1
Live Color: Off

Sharpness: 50
Reality Creation: Auto (Very helpful with sub-4K content)
Mastered in 4K: Off (If your source is a Blu-Ray player, turn this on)
Random & Digital Noise refuction: Auto (I use these when watching cable but don't have these on for Netflix, Amazon, etc.)
Smooth Gradation: High (Very useful for making color bands blend more smoothly)

Motionflow: True Cinema
CineMotion: High

For Game/Graphics (PC) Mode: I use pretty much the same settings but if you have a 4K PC or 4K game you can turn off Reality Creation. You can also enable BFI by setting the Motionflow to Custom and moving the slider to the right. Just make sure if you use it to raise the brightness accordingly.

Thanks. I'm already close to this kind of setup, but I will tweak it more.

BTW, in EU it looks like CineMotion is called "Film mode".

edit - Where can I switch from "screen format full" to "sreen format 1:1 pixel ratio"? I managed to create custom 3440x1440 res via CRU, but I'm encountering some issues with stretching.

Also, is there any way to bind internal VIDEO PLAYER app to some button on the remote? :D

I wouldn't advise anybody to blindly stick Smooth Gradation on High and leave it there.

If a scene contains a plane with slight, intentional variations in colour / texture, this setting will wipe out the details and mash it all together in to a hot blurry mess.

As an example, I watched the Namibia episode of The Grand Tour and sure enough the ripples of the sand dunes were mistaken for unwanted banding. Even on Low you will notice unwanted differences, so be wary of the compromise.

I know it ain't the same set but I spent a day messing with a 65" curved ks8500 and kind of preferred my 49" x900e. The ks8500 didn't seem seem to get as bright. Though, to be fair, I only watched a couple 4k movies on it and it did not get along with my xbone s too well for some movies.

Proper image calibration for a given environment goes a long way (unless you like every setting to mimic what is shown in stores aka vivid mode) in being the "it" factor.

Thanks guys! What about the Rtings story that "This TV supports all of the common input signals. Only HDMI inputs 2 and 3 are capable of showing 4k @ 60 Hz @ 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 color, and only when 'HDMI Enhanced Format' is enabled. 4:4:4 color is supported in both game and graphics mode"

Can this cause problems overtime? Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure for either.

Thanks for this information. I've been looking for drawbacks to this when watching content and I never ran across an instance like yours, so I'll check out TGT.

Lag is totally OK on PC. I did not try 1080p120 so far.

thanks. still hoping to hear a few more opinions from big pc fps players before i finally pull the trigger though. this tv seems absolutely fantastic outside of the slightly iffy input delay and i'm really worried that going from 15-20ms to 30-ish will be the difference between passable and intolerable for me.

maybe i'll just have to bite the bullet to see for myself and send it back if i can't deal

@DieHard: Sweet baby Jesus! That looks darn nice! I really hope that mine isn't a lemon when it arrives sometime next week.

A general query: Can you do "Black Frame Insertion" in game mode and which setting controls that (is it simply on and off or is there a slider)?

Yes! I'm using BFI in PC [Graphics] mode.

Action button > Picture > Advanced Settings > Motion tab, Motionflow set to "custom", and Clearness bar set to Max.

Be aware that you will have to brighten the panel a bit to compensate for the loss of light caused by BFI.

Spotless.

Destiny 2 looks magnificent on it, and as soon as I booted Nex Machina [HDR], I managed to reach much further than ever before on my old 32" 1080p. :D Large panel surface area helps in this frantic game.

On PC I'm badly limited by entry-level RX 460, but I'm fully planning to get something more stronger when prices stabilize [I will maybe wait next spring for next gforce series]. I played a bit of Portal and CS:GO in 4K/1440ultrawide, both are great. In PUBG I'm limmited at 1080p all on very low, and the game still looks OK in fullscreen mode. I also tried Darksiders Warmasted Edition in 1440ultrawide. While the game looks awesome, the framerate stayed at ~30 and was quite choppy.

As for TV/Movies, I'm either streaming "lower" bitrate files via DLNA or using USB stick for high bitrate 4K HDR videos [which can spike above limit of the TV's eternet port [I think that the port cannot even manage full 100mbit]]. Video app of the TV can use it's own preset, so it's always set to Cinema Pro mode.

Videos look awesome, regardless if they are 1080p or 4K [Avengers BD looks insane]. 720p videos with good bitrate also look great.

Edit - one annoyance, internal Video app cannot read standaline SRT files [it can those inside the MKV/MP4 cointainers], and VLC app detects only empy directories when using DLNA. But I'll investigate other players.

So, after having this for a month or so, I've settled on different settings than I listed early in this thread. I tried more custom settings, but came to the realization that the Cinema Pro presets are really pretty great on their own and just need slight tweaks:

For SDR movies/TV, I run Cinema Pro with all the defaults except brightness, which I crank down to 13.

For HDR movies/TV, I run Cinema Pro with all defaults, except that I turn auto local dimming to High.

For SDR games, I obviously have to use game mode. Starting with the defaults, I turn the brightness slightly down to 20 and drop the extended dynamic range from medium to low. While I suggest keeping XDR off for SDR movies/tv, for games it looks noticeably better across the board. However, I prefer to keep it low, so it's not too aggressive.

For HDR games, I run game mode with defaults.

If I watch the HDR playlist on Youtube from the Youtube app on the TV, will it have HDR? I heard you needed a Chromecast?

The native Android TV YouTube app doesn't support HDR yet for some reason. You'll need some other device. I'm not sure about Chromecast Ultra. I use the YT app on my Sony UHD Blu-ray player (UBP-X800) and it supports HDR.

Anyone having problems with image delay when changing inputs? or even when turning devices on i have to switch inputs back and forth to get image, an example is when i turn on my ps4 and the tv after turning the ps4 on i have no signal, at all, i have to change to a different input and back to the ps4 input to get signal, this is so frustrating specially because my previous tv never had these problems.

This is going to sound crazy, but can input lag vary on exact same models? My 65" had DSE so a replacement was sent out. The replacement has worse DSE which sucks, but feels way more responsive. Settings are identical. It's really annoying me.

since hdmi2+3 are the only ones that can output 4k60 4:4:4, and i have a pc, ps4p and uhd bd player, will i have to pick and choose or is hdmi 1 sufficient for uhd movies?

edit: nm found my answer

I don't think so. Just turn on Enhanced Format and use HDMI 2/3 for your 4k sources. I have my Xbone S and Ps4 Pro on 2 and 3 and I use #3 for my pc when I feel like playing stuff on there as well.

Horizon with all the colors popping in 4K is just crazy. This is really the game (GTS too) to show off your new set with. It's amazing!

I get a weird audio glitch alot of the time. My setup is PS4 PRO -> Denon AVR S720W -> X900E. Sometimes when I power everything on the audio won't switch from speakers to audio system on the x900e automatically. Sometimes it will let me do it manually from the x900e menu. Other times it won't even let me and give some error. In that case I power off the receiver and power it back on and the audio cones through fine. It's definitely some handshaking issue but I can't tell what device is at fault.

I might buy this set but I have always learned that you should put sharpness close to 0. Is that only Samsung sets? I see most people have it at 50.

I have that issue when using the built in Netflix app. Sometimes the video will pause and it'll say "switching audio to tv speakers". I can manually switch it back but it's really odd.

Is it necessary to enable X-tended dynamic range in hdr mode? I ask because I find that the X-tended dynamic range makes the whites too bright and the colors too flashy ... I really do not like it but without my feeling that the screen does not illuminate to its full potential ...

You don't technically have to, but the TV is not using its full dynamic range if you don't. What are your other settings? Whether the whites are supposed to be really bright and colors flashy may depend on the content.

This. It can depend on the HDR implementation used on what you're viewing. But typically you want that extended range so that dark scenes still look nice and dark, but a contrasting bright object is convincingly bright. I really can't wait for Destiny 2 to get HDR, because there are some fantastic lighting areas that would look gorgeous in HDR. Uncharted: Lost Legacy uses it very well too.

Wow, I didn't know it didn't have HDR. Ok, well I cant wait as well.

Default sharpness varies between manufacturers.

On Sony TVs, sharpness should be set to 50, while on LG and Samsung TVs it should be set to 10 and 0 respectively, IIRC.

Hi guys

I am really thinking of pulling the pin on this TV and getting it in 65".

Seems like the perfect TV.

However, are you guys ok with the input lag in Game Mode?
I mostly play PS4 Pro exclusive games (Horizons, Bloodborne, TLOU, FFX15, etc).

I have a 144hz/Gsync 1440p LCD hooked up to a 1080Ti for reference, but when playing a PS4 Pro game, I am not the best gamepad player...

I've been playing FF15 on my Pro lately, alternating between Lite and High mode, and it's been good. No issues with latency. As far as competitive games go, I've played roughly 30 hours of Splatoon 2 on it with no issues.

The only game that felt sluggish to me was Gears of War 4 (campaign) on the Xbox One S thus far but I feel that was more an issue with my aim than anything (I struggle to hit the broad side of a barn with dual analog).

Update on this:

If I don't power things on myself and I just let ARC do its thing, the audio doesn't glitch out.

I power on the Pro first which always proceeds to turn on the X900E next. I see it then switch from speakers to audio system which powers on the receiver and links up the audio.

I guess it doesn't like me setting it up to use ARC and then I start occasionally powering up devices on my own.

So what exactly X-tended Dynamic Range does? The explanation on the menu just says darker balcks and brighter whites, is that it?
