Apple September Event 2017 |OT| A Top-Notch Keynote

I never said it didn't work, we saw it work afterwards, weren't you watching?

I said we saw it fail once. It doesn't matter how advanced a technology is, it needs to be perfected if it's going to outright replace something else.

Except,

The FaceID did not fail. The message the phone gave was similar to the one TouchID gives when the phone is restarted. You have to input your passcode manually when you first unlock after restarting. It was a gaffe, but it wasn't a failure of FaceID.

That notch has to be the ugliest thing Apple has done till date. Completely spoils the content. Yuck.

Yep not a fan at all of the notch. The X feels like people get to pay to have next year's model in a not completely done state early.

Also while I think the headphone jack is gone for good, I'm not buying touch id being gone for good (8 still has it). I wouldn't be surprised if the 2018 iPhone has both (Touch and Face).

TouchID is coming back next year. They just couldn't get the kinks out this year.

So this is certain? No way I would get the X knowing this.

Because it's INCONVENIENT AF! I don't want to pick up my phone and look at it every time I want to unlock it (which is hundreds of times a day) while it's sitting on my desk or table

You may want to evaluate why you need to look at your phone hundreds of times a day while it also needs to sit flat on your desk.

Something other than I wanna.

There were people in the iPhone X thread talking about how it would have 16GB base storage. You've been around long enough to know how ignorant some of the criticism can be.

Hard to say how baked it is without actually using it for an extended period of time in different lighting scenarios. I have a beard that I change up quite a lot, will it be an issue? Guess we'll find out soon enough.

So they still haven't increased the 4.7" iPhone's resolution?

Sigh.
I don't think that's gonna happen until they unify the line again and all iPhones have the X screen style and it starts coming in a smaller version again.

And even then it'll still be the same 4.7" with extra pixels on the ends like the X is basically a 5.5" with .3" extra for the edge stuff.

I think this is bound to shift over time. Apple fucked up hard today. You can get the S8 for $400 less than the X, with a better looking design and feature set. You'd have to be an idiot to buy the X...

And don't get me wrong, the X looks like a nice phone, but I just don't see anything that justifies the price tag. It should have been X and X+, for 800-900$. Not this 8 / X nonsense.

I'm not really sure if much of their base cares about the price. If they do well the SE and 7 is still available.

So I either have to turn off security altogether, or make it go straight to passcode (which requires at least 4 taps)? Yeah, super inconvenient.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. By design Face ID requires less interaction than Touch ID does. It should be more convenient, of course we will need to wait for further impressions. A quick swipe to unlock is no different than pressing a home button.

What situations would require more than 3gb of RAM on an iPhone? How is that limiting it in anyway right now? Even in the foreseeable future?

This is also the same argument to why bother spending a grand on a new iPhone. Apps haven't been getting better, most of the hardware is woefully underutilized. Might as well save cash. We're talking in terms of excess here, not objective usability.

Why would you unlock your phone if you're not going to look at it?

being a tad facetious here, I know what you mean

I know you're being facetious, but for sake of argument I unlock my phone without looking directly at it 100x a day at work in order to open/close an app, check something quickly, or change music tracks quickly. I know I can do some of that with AirPods/in-line remote, Siri, etc but that's slow and annoying.

hmm.. iphone X is ridiculously more powerful than S8. iOS has considerably more developer backing. people looking at it are probably heavily invested in the apple ecosystem.. and they'd only not be idiots if they ignored all of that and jumped to a new platform on a less powerful less supported phone.

got it.

no, it's not. these aren't even founded rumors. this is message board dreaming. show me one credible source that says it's coming back next year.

Why would I want to pay a premium for a phone with that stupid black bar at the top and rounded edges? Can't even see a full image. What a joke.

I can see some content creators cleverly hiding content where it would be covered by the black bar.

They suggested no because like Touch ID, your face has a ton of nuances it’s looking for. Your eyelid and nose might set off an unlock match even if it isn’t seeing matches in the Dot matrix on your jaw. I imagine it’ll be fucked if you grow a beard and get some polarized sunglasses tho

I think I’ll get the 8 Plus for me while getting my wife an X. For everything I like about the X, there’s something that bugs me about it. She always hated Touch ID because it never worked for her as well as it did for me, and she’ll appreciate the Face ID feature much better. I think I’d rather stick with Touch ID for at least another year and wait for another iteration to let them get it working better.

They specifically said it'll learn and can adapt to facial hair. If it was anything like Touch ID you could go and give it more data points to remember.

I'm still keen to see how it handles black faces at night. I mean you'd think Apple of all companies would be ready for it but facial recognition and non-light skinned faces has always been a blind spot in tech.

You should be able to see full 16:9 content with no cropping (unless you purposely zoom and let the black bar cover it).

I don't think Apple cares. With the X, they get a higher ASP from those people who just have to have the latest and greatest phones, while everyone else buys a 8 or even gets a lower-tier phone.

It's the same tactic they used for iPads; there's a new, lower-cost iPad at the low end, but they goosed ASP with the more expensive Pros.

check email, twitter, text messages, lookup fucking anything and everything via the internet, reference notes, etc., etc., etc.......

thanks for letting me know I've been using my device incorrectly.

Explain to me how I can unlock my phone with FaceID without pointing it directly at my face. Swiping has nothing to do with what I'm talking about.

$1319 in Canada... yikes

This is for a phone that has no headphone jack or fingerprint sensor and is not doing anything new that other phones haven't already done.

Does this risk hurting Apple sales? If people really want the X but are put off by the price, and the limited visual difference of the 8 compared to 6/6s/7 - maybe less people will upgrade to 8 which is presumably their bread and butter model?

I also assume when they bring out the XI next year they’ll drop the price by $100 to loud applause, and it’ll still be way more than the 7/8 were

Nope. The message on the screen is the same as the one you get if you try to use Touch ID too many times and fail. The message you get after a restart specifically tells you it's required because of a restart; Craig's message did not.

I didn't have a chance to watch the conference and I skimmed news about the Apple Watch Series 3. Do you need to pay another fee to use it with your carrier or there isn't any announcements yet?

TouchID is coming back next year. They just couldn't get the kinks out this year.

The report was that they couldn't get TouchID to the accuracy level they wanted through OLED. There's no guarantee they ever will, and even then if FaceID works and people accept it as the only way to go (as in if the X is successful), why would they continue to bang their head against that problem?

I dunno about all this. With an iPhone 6 and Apple Watch Series 2 I don't really see a compelling reason to upgrade. I'll try and book an appointment for getting a new phone battery soon I guess.

I think something that really needs to be talked about is RAM. Apple has been skimping on RAM for years (don't give me the iOS is optimized, blah blah shit please). Please don't tell me the 8 has 2GB like the 7 and 8 plus and X only have 3 like the 7 plus.

If so that's bullshit.

iPhone 8 at 3 GB, 8 plus at 4Gb and X at 6GB would be acceptable.

I feel like the only time it has ever been an issue with actual performance was with the iPhone 6 Plus. The specs of that device just could not handle the increase in resolution.

what does any typical user need the power for? 99% of what you ever do on a phone will work just as well on snapdragon 835 as the new Apple chip. And 95% of apps you'd ever use are on Android now anyway... switching at this point is painless.

There are a lot of idiots in the world.

Multiple simultaneous levels of biometric authentication is, at the end of the day, the best kind of security you can get.

No it'll be at least £70 for the 64GB X.

256GB X is 1149, so for 24m = 47.875/mth.

Vodafone already offer 20GB for GBP20 (including Spotify Premium) and at more attractive rates when bundled in contract with a flagship phone since the effective subsidy on the phone is c.5-10% of the price.

Take 10% of the retail ASP, divide by 24mths, add the service contract and you'll be at 65 ballpark for zero money down. That is already an insanely high price.
