Is the 8 that big of an upgrade over the 7? My contract runs out soon and I'm thinking of going back to iOS over Android this year and if it's not I'll just go for the 7.

Do the older Apple Watches support wireless charging (AirPower mat etc) or is it limited to just the new Series 3?

It might finally be time to upgrade from my OG Apple Watch.

I’m debating between the two as well. I’ll probably go with the 8. 4k60 is great, I’ll eventually want to use the charging mat for comfort and the A11 seems like a beast that should easily last 3 or 4 years until Apple has the sensor bar figured out and software fine tuned to their new design.

They said only series 3 in the keynote
What the hell? I totally assumed this would work for all seeing how the Watch does “wireless” charging now.

Apple Watches always supported wireless charging (that's how the magnetic charger works), I think there's just a software block that's stopped them from working with other Qi chargers. The Watch's charger works with some other Qi-capable watches like the Moto 360, but the Watch rejects other Qi chargers at the moment. Not sure if they're enabling older watches to use other chargers or just the Series 3, but it should be technically possible for all of them.

It seems like the Apple Watch LTE is going to be targeted at athletes and that is it. I genuinely cannot imagine many scenarios where somebody is not going to want to be taking their phone with them except for things like going for a run, swimming, cycling, and the like. Personally speaking, I would get one since it is only $70 more and I can definitely see myself thinking how nice it would be to just carry the watch instead of my phone weighing me down in my pocket when I go for a run.

See, I'm the complete opposite. I see the Apple Watch LTE as completely liberating me from my phone. People can still get in contact with me if needed, but no longer am I tethered to a phone and constantly plugged in.

The wireless mat needs to be purchased separately right? How much will it be? Tbh I don't think I'm very interested. I'll prob keep the 7 for a while before I upgrade.

They're cutting down and combining sections, this is great!

Well, maybe not for people who liked to buy iOS apps from their computer, but still

It sucks for all those people trying to preserve 32-bit apps to use on older devices, since they'll have to keep an old version of iTunes around to be able to sync apps and store those IPAs.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
Nice:

iPhone X and iPhone 8 Charge to 50% in 30 Minutes With Fast-Charge Feature

And before someone else posts this, yes I know Android phones have been able to do this since the early 60's.
What's not nice is that Apple still probably won't bundle the usb-c chargers needed for this to work, just like they don't with iPad Pros. You have to pay about $50 extra to buy the charger and cable.

Nope. Look again.
As far as I can see steel model is only available with LTE: https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-watch/apple-watch
I too would rather get the non-LTE model if it was available, as I can't even use the LTE in Canada since I'm not with Bell.

Only the aluminum models seem to be available in non-LTE option.

Yeah that's definitely the case but hopefully you're like me and you already have some of those chargers sitting around.

Darn, I kind of assumed that would be the case even though it should be technically possible to support all Apple Watches.

I wasn't planning on upgrading my launch watch until a form factor redesign, but the AirPower mat is very appealing to me. The bundled Apple Watch charger always seems to slide off my nightstand the second I lift my watch off it, plus I always seem to place it on the wrong non-charging side the first time, which is also a bit annoying.

Let's say I just want to check the time on the iPhone X, I have to told it up to my face? I can't just tap the screen or press a button to show notifications?

Nonoriri

If your name is Nonoriri you have to go buy Nanami's tampons.

You can tap the screen.

The cost is probably all from the HDR display.

It looks interesting, but I'll wait to see what other Android phones go slim in the next year. I definitely want an HDR screen next time, too.

I like the formfactor of the X, even the notch doesn't bother me, but I really wish they didn't bother with OLED/HDR. I don't need them on my phone. I wish they had released a cheaper sku without OLED/HDR.

This is terrible. I download all my apps to my Mac in case they get removed from the App Store later or an app releases a bad update so I can roll back. It's also much faster to restore apps when they've already been downloaded when restoring an iOS backup.

Is it me or does "50% Battery in 30 Minutes" really not seem all that fast? I feel like a normal wall outlet + Lightning cable will probably do 35-40% in the same amount of time on my 6S Plus.

You use your face only to unlock. You can wake the screen by tapping it, picking up the phone, or hitting the side button. AFAIK it will not unlock and go to the home screen until you swipe up to confirm that's what you want to do.

Even as a decade-long Apple fan who has put up with a lot of their bullshit over the years, I absolutely cannot believe that Apple TV pricing. What a joke.

So I understand iTunes 12.7 no longer has an apps or ringtone section, and thus you cannot sync these via iTunes any more.

I wonder if they've changed anything else like Aperture photo library syncing or what not.

Using a regular outlet, It takes two hours to charge a regular iPhone and three hours for the plus.

Faster using a 10W charger, but still not as fast as 15W USB-C charging.

Apps (that are still on the store) haven’t used iTunes to restore since like iOS8. Even if you restore from an iTunes backup it’ll download all the apps from the App Store because of app slicing

You can still add old apps and ringtones to your phone via iTunes. There's an Apple support document describing the process, but you basically drag and drop them onto the phone in iTunes.
But how do you download them to your Mac in the first place?

Okay, I didn't know that. I haven't had to restore for a long time!

I thought they actually did get them from the computer if they were there? the app store versions from iTunes I thought weren't sliced?

Eh, I could be wrong, I haven't done a restore in ages. Still, I'm on an iPhone 5, so I can still run 32-bit apps. Not sure if I should hold onto iTunes 12.6 or not lol. I'm still on El Capitan because of Aperture. I'm really stretching it thin, I know lol.

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
Is the back for the Gold 8 white? Seems to be either white or gold depending on the pic; hard to tell.

Wow. Really great to hear Jony Ive actually plant the stake with AR! Only just watched the iPhone X 3 minute ad but it ended with what I feel is a very interesting statement. I really do wonder if we'll have another App store boom but for AR fart apps etc.

If the Series 3 design doesn't appeal to you, WatchDots might be a good option.

Haha awesome!

Applesauce

Boom! Bitch-slapped!
I think ima get an Apple Watch finally as well. I have been holding off since it was first announced but the series 3 looks difficult for me to resist.

worn mine almost every day since launch and ive had it die on me less than 10 times id say. id say the battery life in general is a day and half. maybe i dont use mine as much as some. but generally speaking if i forget to charge at night mine dies the next day around 1 or 2 pm.

its deteriorated slightly over time but not more than is normal or expected from batteries.

Same.

I've been all over the place with my thoughts on the new lineup. I'm looking at the comparison chart on the Apple website, and I'm leaning towards buying a 7 Plus.

And it looks like the Series 3 and 1 are the only options for the Apple Watch now.
